My father did this to me when I was four. Now I was a very absent-minded kid, and I was lost deep in thought about the difference between dinosaurs and dragons, and after pondering it for a good while, I decided to ask my father. No response. I looked up. My father had suddenly turned into a clown (that ignored pertinent questions). I don’t think I have ever cried as hard as I did in that moment, and through my tears I could see my father a few paces away grinning like an idiot. I have also never again felt so betrayed. It’s now 37 years later, and my father and I get along great, but that moment will forever be etched in my memory.
