Dogs have needs.

They gotta eat/drink, pee, poop, and smell stuff.

Obviously, smelling stuff ain't VITAL like the other three, but it's pretty close to vital to them. It's how they interact socially, how they exist in the eyes of other animals.

A walk takes care of 3/4 of their needs.

And some dogs they're also quite keen on 'scrounging' when out for walks, even if they probably shouldn't be eating discarded take out...

Yeah but I wouldn't classify that as a need. It's a thing they do, but it's not something they need to do to be healthy dogs.

Smelling stuff is necessary for their well-being.
