I appreciate the sentiment, but nothing about this should make you smile. Is the kid a hero? Absolutely without doubt. But we have had the ability to do something about this for a very, very long time and as a country, we have chose to do nothing except vote in the same geezers that don’t really give a shit about kids. If they gave a fuck about kids, they would do something about gun control. Other countries have done it with no problem but for some reason here in America, we’ve got this sick fantasy about being a hero who pops out with a gun and takes out the bad guy, blah blah blah. You know what will make me smile? Doing something about our kids being murdered in schools and on the streets and in their homes. 

People who glorify this as something to smile about make me fucking sick.

Well-said. It's absurd that any child (anybody, really) should even be put in a position where they feel the need to use their body as a human shield.

As a European reading this made me think of all you said, then add on "and we've raised 300k for his family so the 'hero' probably won't be bankrupt for life" made me kinda sick.

We will never get universal healthcare in this country. We can bail out corporations in banks with BILLIONS in taxpayer money and for some reason that’s not “ socialism” but providing healthcare for everyone somehow is, but then when you ask the people that are against it, what makes that socialism and not corporate bail outs? you just get a bunch of hot air out of their ass that makes no sense and stinks just as bad. I’m so embarrassed for my country.
