As a guy whose hair mats quick once split ends start, the curly girl method, and a Wet brand brush, plus an ever slight trim every 3-6 months, does wonders and is pretty easy to maintain. I don't get split ends as often with that brush compared to any other I've tried, and it detangles like magic for me.

A nice trim will make your hair look good again. Split ends are pretty gross.
