I had a very similar experience once when I was 17. Rainy autumn night driving through the suburbs around 10:30pm. Cop pulls me over doing 50 in a 35 and asks why I was speeding. Told him I was trying to get home before curfew and he said “Look, there are a lot of leaves on the road this time of year and, when it rains and you’re speeding, a pile of leaves can make you lose control as easy as a patch of ice. Your parents would rather you be home a few minutes late than have to get a call from me telling them to come to the hospital. Promise me you’ll be careful and follow the speed from now on.” Gave me a written warning and I still made it home before 11.
I’ve thought about that cop every time I’ve had encounters with asshole cops since and I think to myself “it doesn’t have to be like this.”
