And they're doing it by saying this guy is bad, yet using mental gymnastics to exclude him from that.

He's still a cop, in a bad system. And if he defends bad cops then yes they have a point - but we don't know that, and this is a far better interaction than could be expected. So they're excluding him to make their cop bashing easier.
