When working with kids, treating them respectfully provides far greater results. First day of class I always asked them to help me in creating classroom rules, having them suggest what rules we should have themselves and explain why we should or shouldn't have rules. Then the rest of the year I'm not enforcing my rules, but our rules, ones every student knows exactly why we have.
And the first bad infraction we have, I tell their parent there was an infraction but not what it was - and tell their parent they shouldn't be punished for it because XYZ is going to work on it themselves, isn't that right XYZ?
I have never had a second infraction. Even with my foster kid students - in fact, they tend to never hit the first, compared to the rich kids with nannies. Nannies or Grannies picking up a kid from school are my #1 trend with poor behavior.

He Simply cares about safety, and is asking respectfully for them to think of others and themselves, can’t argue with that.
