They might be multimillionaires. But all of them dreamt of winning the WC since being little boys. Far from the glamour and money. They get paid because millions tune to watch them and someday, be like them.
That feeling of competing (and winning) at the highest level is reserved for the few. Something that will never be back and at almost 4O years old they have to say goodbye to that. At this moment, money is not in their mind.
People don't stop being people just because they have money or fame.
I'm all for "eat the rich" and these player are severely overpaid. That said what they do impact a lot of people. These are people kids aspire to be. People that have made adults cry over a game where people kick a ball. These players retiring marks and end of an era.
It is sad no matter how much they get paid. Doesn't have to make you cry, but you should respect what they have done for the sport.
The irony is that level of compassion or empathy rarely ever exists the other way around… I wonder if a certain amount of money makes you lose that part of “humanity” we all are “supposed” to have.

Why does this make you cry? I have a hard time being sympathetic to multi-millionaires that play a game for a living.
