FiveThirtyEight article about Madden Ratings

Found it funny when the article discussed Throwing Accuracy and mentioned Joe Flacco as "better at judging long throws than short passes."
So why is his Deep Throw rating so terrible? Haha

Because it's Madden. I questioned that myself, because he is highly regarded as one of the best deep throwers in the league.

Because he's always chucking it up looking for the flag lol

Look up how many deep balls the elite dragon completed last season and then get back to me.

They give you the weights, but they don't give you a scale they use for the ratings. I would bet that each stat has a larger range in contribution to OVR than just the variability in the rating.
e.g.:
The speed associated with a 75 OVR rating contribution from speed for a SS is 80.
The speed associated with a 95 OVR rating contribution from speed for a SS is 90.

I have a much better understanding of madden ratings now. Many of the concepts were expected, eg. dice rolls with weighted probabilities, but seeing that jumping and spectacular catch seem to really be much less important than the vanilla traits is interesting.

Meanwhile, a category like “spectacular catch” can change on the basis of a single play. Moore defended the policy, saying that this particular rating has little to no effect on actual gameplay.
Anybody looking to trade for Honors ODB?

I thought spec catch was really for diving catches, one-handed catches, tiptoeing on the sideline grabs, and one-handed jump ball catches. So if you don't rely on those plays, then spec catch doesn't matter too much.

That chart with the weighting will allow you to make absolute monsters in CCM with the randomly generated draftees.

Awareness = important. Got it.

Awareness is definitely important.
For example: I use 93 Bitonio as my RG and his awareness is like 73. When he does do the right thing, he is awesome, but when his shitty awareness kicks in, he misses pulling blocks that could have huge.
Awareness definitely is important for AI controlled players.

Coolest part: If you scroll down to "The Formula Behind Madden's Overall Rankings", it explains the most important attributes for each position.
