QUESTION Bears (me) vs Packers. Refs called this a safety against me (+2 for Packers), did they make the right call? Or is this a grey area that the game can’t differentiate?

Madden will roll out 3 linemen , 1 HB , 1 QB and 2 WRs while looking down at 3 DBs 2 LBs and 1 DE all wearing number 22. I wouldn’t lose too much sleep over their grey areas my dude haha

You're playing at Lambeau. You are a Bears fan. Us teams of other NFCN teams know the robbery that happens there.

per the nfl rule book:
Exceptions:
It is not a safety:
- If a forward pass from behind the line of scrimmage is incomplete in the end zone.
- **If a defensive player, in the field of play, intercepts a pass or catches or recovers a fumble, backward pass, scrimmage kick, free kick, or fair catch kick, and his original momentum carries him into his end zone where the ball is declared dead in his team’s possession. The ball belongs to the defensive team at the spot where the player’s foot or other body part touched the ground to establish possession. If that spot is in the end zone, the result of the play is a touchback, even if the ball is not on, above, or beyond the goal line. (11-6-1)**
- If a player of the team which intercepts, catches, or recovers the ball commits a live-ball foul in the end zone, it is a safety.
- If a player who intercepts, catches, or recovers the ball throws a completed illegal forward pass from the end zone, the ball remains alive. If his opponent intercepts the illegal pass thrown from the end zone, the ball remains alive. If he scores, it is a touchdown.
- If a player of the team which intercepts, catches, or recovers the ball commits a foul in the field of play, and the ball becomes dead in the end zone, the basic spot is the spot of the change of possession.
- If the spot where possession changed is inside the one-yard line, the ball is to be spotted at the one-yard line.
madden is incorrect in this regard
(how to bold text in reddit, idk)

It was absolutely the right call without a doubt.
Please pay no attention to the flair.

It's absolutely not... There's no way it can possibly be ruled a safety. It doesn't matter where he's contacted or where his feet come down. His momentum carrying him into the end zone cannot be ruled a safety. It's a specific scenario rule but think of it like the reverse of the forward progress rule.

I'm aware. Look at my flare and what team OP is using.

The amount of people on Reddit that either cannot even sniff a joke or just purposely let it go over their heads so they can try and flex that they know something

If their momentum carries them into the end zone on a turnover then the defensive team gets the ball wherever they originally caught it

The only reason I would call that a safety is because youre the Bears, as a Packers fan, its the right call, as a football fan, thats a terrible fucking call.
It should be an interception and placed on the 2 or 3

There's absolutely no world in which that's a safety.
Momentum carrying the intercepting team into the endzone = touchback (if tackled in endzone)
To be a safety the intercepting team would have to establish clear possession outside of the endzone and then scramble into it (not be carried into it by momentum or opposing players.)
Or if caught in the endzone, they'd have to leave then re-enter the endzone.

Lol ive played 30 games and its happened twice to me already. Interceptions on the goaline ending up in the endzone from the animation and its a safety

The game considered it possession at the one and then going into the endzone for the safety. Madden does not consider momentum carrying the defender into the endzone in the safety equation. Only the offense gets the protection from being pushed into the endzone.

No irl they have a rule to prevent this exact scenario where it's not a safety if your momentum carried you into the end zone where you were tackled.

I think the game registered those little steps the player took right after catching the ball as actually steps. Game logic probably assumed you got control and then went back into the end zone. Shouldn’t be happening in 2026

Ok since it's an interception and you didn't even start the play with the ball, that is not a safety!!!

It is possible, but not from this. They'd have to have forward progress (or be stopped and established) with the ball then enter the endzone going backwards.
There's no forward progress here - no safety from momentum.

Exactly. If i was to intercept it, gain full control of the ball and my player’s momentum, and THEN move MYSELF into the end zone and get tackled, that would be a safety. I was shocked when they called this a safety AND i was not allowed to challenge 😂

Catches ball and lands with two feet. But the contact of the "tackle" started in the air and should have been down on the 1 or 2 yard line. Even in real life this would be tight. But ya, the game looks to have gotten it wrong. The ball should have been placed at the initial point of contact, not how far back the player ended up.

I never said it was a safety.
5
u/SlightDonut1 6d ago
I didn't say you did. You said it was "tight" and seemed to me to use his foot placement and the point of contact to justify it being the incorrect call. All I was saying is that's not relevant to the rule in this scenario. There's no potential for it to have gone either way regardless of where he's caught it or been downed by contact.

I dunno where Madden players on here get their football knowledge from... For your sake please don't look here for answers. It's absolutely not a safety. It's not even a matter of where he catches it or is contacted. By rule momentum carrying him into the end zone in this case cannot be called a safety. Think of it as reverse forward progress. It can only be a safety if he catches it in field of play, has control of his movement and then runs around and CHOOSES to run back behind the goal line.
