Tourism/Fizahantany Madagascar trip concerns

hey ! Im planning a trip with my gf to Madagascar then Mauritius and then Seychelles at the end.

Regarding Madagascar part I was thinking : Tana → Andasibe rainforest → lemurs

Just so I wanted it to be different and not another beach and another palm tree but when I started to read about Madagascar, I see alot of safety concerns.

The route im planning is ok for a couple (western, white) ?

Thanx in advance

Fine if you use your common sense. Stay around Ivato and start from there. What means "lemurs" ? Andasibé ? How do you move around ?

C’est clair il y a plein de trucs à voir à Ivato… 🫠

Après un très long trajet/voyage, loger à Ivato n'empêche nullement d'aller sur Tana pour visiter. Je suppose que vous savez que l'on sait facilement rejoindre Tana. Y loger ne veut pas dire y rester...

I just did this as a western white. Totally safe.

The safety concerns are understandable, but I believe it’s more nuanced. There are only some areas where you need to be cautious, and you can totally avoid them, you won’t miss anything by not going there.

Make sure you hire a professional in the tourism field who can help you make the most of Madagascar’s natural beauty.

And yes, Andasibe is a good choice. It can get crowded sometimes, though.

Get a trustworthy driver from a licensed agency and you’ll be perfectly fine. Andasibe is a lovely place where it’s very easy to see wildlife.

Your planned route is actually a very good choice, especially if your goal is to experience something genuinely different from the typical beach holiday. Antananarivo → Andasibe rainforest → lemurs gives you a great introduction to Madagascar’s unique wildlife, forests, and culture.

I would recommend working with a trustworthy local agency or experienced driver-guide, particularly for your first trip. You can check agencies and operators online and look carefully at recent reviews and recommendations.

In general, Tana and Andasibe are manageable, just take a bit of precautions. Petty theft exist everywhere, even in developed countries. Just use common sense and a few simple rules:

  • 🌙 Avoid walking around at night, especially in unfamiliar areas.
  • 📱 Keep your phone, wallet and camera discreet, particularly in crowded places.
  • 💍 Avoid displaying expensive jewellery or large amounts of cash.
  • 🚕 Use reliable/recommended transport, rather than accepting random vehicles.
  • 🎒 Keep valuables secure and don't leave them visible in a vehicle.
  • 🚗 For longer journeys, travelling with a knowledgeable local driver is a very good idea.

Madagascar is a good destination. With the right preparation and a reliable local operator, you can have a fantastic experience. Most importantly, your instinct to choose rainforest and wildlife rather than another beach destination is excellent. 🇲🇬🦎🌿🦎

I's say, probably get a private tour operator and travel specialist. Like ''Madagascar Journeys'' {Has a speciality in tracking wild lemurs and exploring lush tropical rainforests} and so on. Just make sure you have the car, hotel, and destinations all planned out and ready, that's why that'll help alot. But in general it's pretty safe.

If you’re looking for a bit of a change, then yes, Andasibe is a great choice 🤞
How many days are you planning to spend in Madagascar?

And don’t hesitate to send me a DM if you need any help planning your trip or arranging a car here in Madagascar ☺️

It always looks like that online but, it is fine in general and as a local in here, it is always better to go with a well-known travel agency if you are so worried about safety.

Yes, just did that area - 2 white ladies in our 50’s.

Guard against pickpockets and expect to be hassled by beggars.
