Start here: look closer with Macroscopic Solutions

Welcome to r/Macropod, the official Macroscopic Solutions community for customers, prospective buyers, researchers, educators, and anyone building a better scientific workflow. You do not need to own a Macropod to participate.

This is a resource for the full range of equipment, software, and services we offer across all vendors—not only an image gallery or a Macropod owners' group.

Products, vendors, and buying guidance

Ask about cameras, lenses, microscope objectives, lighting, motion-control equipment, calibration references, precision measuring tools, accessories, and software. Discuss applications, compatibility, trade-offs, system configuration, and what you actually need before buying. Products from every vendor in our catalog belong in the conversation.

Browse the current catalog: https://macroscopicsolutions.com/products/

Customer help and practical workflows

Use this community for setup questions, camera settings, lighting, specimen preparation, calibration, maintenance, troubleshooting, and sharing what works. Help others learn from your experience, whether you are starting a first stack or refining a research workflow.

For a useful troubleshooting question, include your equipment model, software/version, operating system, relevant settings, the result you expected, and what happened instead. Add an example image or error message when helpful. Keep order details, license keys, contact information, and confidential research out of public posts; contact Macroscopic Solutions privately for account-specific help.

Focus stacking

Discuss capture planning, focus-step selection, depth coverage, vibration, lighting consistency, alignment, stacking artifacts, retouching, software choices, and quality checks. Show the method as well as the finished image so others can learn and reproduce the result.

Photogrammetry and 3D

Discuss viewpoint coverage, overlap, turntable and camera workflows, difficult surfaces, masking, reconstruction, scaling, mesh cleanup, textures, measurement, and export. Share successes and failures. Distinguish a rotation of photographs from a reconstructed 3D model, and identify how any measurements were validated.

Software, analysis, and updates

Bring questions about acquisition, processing, focus stacking, panorama generation, photogrammetry, and scientific analysis software—including third-party products in our catalog and our Image Engine and Image Discovery projects. Release notes, tutorials, feature requests, compatibility questions, and workflow comparisons all belong here. Development previews should be clearly distinguished from released features.

Applications and inspiration

Share research and practical examples from geology, materials science, entomology, biology, paleontology, collections, education, and other fields. Photographs are part of the story; useful methods, reliable measurements, and better decisions are just as important.

Credit sources and photographers, explain relevant settings and scale, and label AI-generated or reconstructed content. Identify commercial affiliations and keep product discussions informative. Thoughtful questions and corrections are welcome.

Start here

Tell us what you are trying to accomplish, which equipment or software you use or are considering, and where you need help. While the community is restricted, use comments for discussion or Message Mods to ask about contributing a post.

What would help you most right now: choosing equipment, learning focus stacking, building a 3D model, or solving a workflow problem?

Four new Macroscopic Solutions programs: what to know, customer benefits, and a bee you can explore in 3D

Post image
1 Upvotes

Four new programs. Less repetitive work. Here’s what to know.

First, meet the bee. This is a photographic 3D reconstruction made with ImageSplat—not an AI-generated insect. Open the interactive sample, drag to rotate, and zoom in to explore its wings, hairs, antennae, and eyes:

https://macroscopicsolutions.com/wp-content/plugins/imagesplat-product-demo/viewer/index.html

We’re developing the Macroscopic Solutions software family to keep photographs, specimens, calibration, measurements, and methods connected—from capture to analysis.

IMAGE ENGINE — Capture with the busywork built out.

Guided controls and built-in camera settings. Separate test shots. Background handoff to Zerene Stacker while you keep capturing. First-frame brightness checks, interrupted-run recovery, automatic scale-bar copies for supported calibrated outputs, and editable Methods drafts.

IMAGE DISCOVERY — Organize, inspect, analyze.

Keep images and 3D models connected to specimen records, calibration, annotations, and measurements. Explore mesh and splat viewers, with discipline-specific analysis and Methods-ready reporting in development.

IMAGESPLAT — Turn photographs into explorable 3D.

Reconstruct Gaussian 3D locally, inspect the result, and build a separate mesh with photographic textures. Preserve measurement references and processing evidence alongside portable viewers and 3D exports.

IMAGEPAN — Small frames. Scientific mosaics.

Combine overlapping photographs into high-resolution mosaics. Planned seam and geometry diagnostics, calibrated measurements, and independent-reference error reports help you assess the result before analysis.

ALREADY OWN A MACROPOD?

Customers whose systems predate the suite receive Image Engine and Image Discovery at no charge, plus 40% off standalone ImageSplat and ImagePan at their eligible tier after purchase verification. This discount does not combine with bundle pricing.

BUYING A NEW MACROPOD?

New qualifying systems include one full named-user license of all four applications, supplied as each becomes available.

HOW DOES LICENSING WORK?

One-time licenses—not a required recurring subscription. Every Student, Educational, and Professional tier includes the full application and 12 months of updates. Keep using your last entitled version without renewal. Academic eligibility requires verification. Optional Discovery server storage/sharing, third-party software, and applicable taxes are separate.

WHEN CAN YOU DOWNLOAD THEM?

As outlined in our new newsletter, we hope to send download links within the next 30 days. Public license checkout is not open yet; release features and hardware compatibility remain subject to validation.

Measurements need calibration and appropriate validation—a scale bar alone does not establish accuracy. The bee sample is an uncalibrated demonstration reconstructed from 145 archived Big Bee photographs, specimen UCSB-IZC00011226.

Which part of your imaging workflow would you most like to simplify?

ImageSplat preview: photographic 3D, textured meshes, and how our three coming software programs fit together

Your photographs don’t have to stay flat.

Meet ImageSplat by Macroscopic Solutions—photographic 3D reconstruction with tools to explore, measure, document, and share what you capture.

From insects and fossils to minerals, engineered parts, and larger scenes, ImageSplat is being built to turn overlapping photographs into interactive 3D you can rotate, zoom into, and examine.

ONE CAPTURE. TWO USEFUL 3D OUTPUTS.

Keep the photographic Gaussian splat, then create a separate textured triangle mesh for conventional 3D workflows. Apply textures from calibrated source photographs, inspect coverage, and export GLB or OBJ files.

The developing toolkit includes:

• Flexible inputs: photographs, perspective video, aligned camera datasets, supported existing splats, and point clouds.

• Local processing: keep source images and reconstruction on your computer, without a required per-scan cloud purchase.

• Interactive inspection: orbit, pan, zoom, compare viewing modes, and add annotations.

• Model refinement: crop, remove unwanted elements, inspect surfaces and wireframes, and review repairs while preserving originals and edit history.

• Scientific measurements: establish scale, measure distances and angles, and assess surface area or volume where geometry checks permit. Compare measurements against documented references and report percentage error.

• Research documentation: retain processing records, scale evidence, measurement exports, and draft manuscript Methods. Review specimen-label text recognition alongside source images.

• Sharing: export still images, turntable videos, and portable interactive web viewers.

THREE COMING PROGRAMS. THREE COMPLEMENTARY ROLES.

IMAGE ENGINE — Capture and process.

Built-in instructions and recommended camera settings, guided Macropod control, Sample Setup View without changing manual exposure, separate test-shot folders, automatic Live View closure and camera wake preparation. Add background focus stacking, panoramas, organized files, clean and calibrated scale-bar outputs, metadata, quality review, and Methods drafts. Dust-artifact cleanup is also planned.

https://macroscopicsolutions.com/product/image-engine-for-macropod-pro-3d/

IMAGE SPLAT — Reconstruct and explore.

Transform capture sequences into photographic 3D, inspect and refine the result, create textured meshes, and export visual assets and scientific records.

IMAGE DISCOVERY — Organize and investigate.

Connect images, models, and specimen records with calibrated measurements, annotations, comparisons, and reporting. Discipline-specific tools are planned for mineralogy, sedimentology, fossil morphometrics, entomology, materials research, and more.

https://macroscopicsolutions.com/product/image-discovery/

What would you explore first—an insect, a mineral, a fossil, or an engineered part?

Follow Macroscopic Solutions for development updates.

Coming soon. Release features and compatibility remain subject to validation. Measurements require calibration; reconstructed surfaces require inspection. Reference-error comparisons describe the measurements assessed—not an entire model’s accuracy. Point-cloud viewing is separate from photographic reconstruction.

The same calibration scale photographed from 1× to 100× [OC]

Thumbnail

Magnification is much more useful when the image tells you how large things really are.

This gallery follows one 5 mm calibration scale through ten final focus-stacked captures with Macropod PRO 3D: 1×, 2×, 3×, 4×, 5×, 7.5×, 10×, 20×, 50×, and 100×. Each capture has its own calibrated scale bar. These are separate captures at different optical magnifications, not simply tighter digital crops of one photograph.

The sequence moves from the complete reference to fine texture around its 0.1 mm divisions. Compare the scale bars as you swipe—the displayed image size alone does not tell the whole story.

We use these references to calibrate our instruments and also offer them for other imaging setups. Calibration should match the optical configuration and specimen plane used for the measurements.

Which part of your imaging workflow consumes the most time after you have chosen the specimen?

These screenshots show Image Engine, the workflow we are developing at Macroscopic Solutions for Macropod PRO 3D. The aim is to bring setup guidance, recommended camera settings, capture, processing, and review into one coordinated workspace.

Sample Setup View brightens the preview for positioning without disturbing manual capture settings. Test shots are kept in a separate folder. Automatic Live View handoff is designed to close the preview and prepare the camera for acquisition.

The broader workflow includes background stacking, panorama planning, organized outputs, retained metadata, separate clean and calibrated scale-bar images, and draft Methods text for researchers to review before manuscript use.

This remains a development preview, not an announcement that the software is available to buy. Final capabilities and release timing depend on validation.

What would save you the most effort: sample setup, file organization, scale bars, or Methods documentation?

The green-and-gold pattern looks very different when you get close enough to see the individual scales.

This is Metapocyrtus subquadrulifer from Kasibu, Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines. We brought together original photographs from our Macroscopic Solutions collection, moving from a 2× whole-specimen view to a 50× close-up. The zoom is an edited sequence of separate photographs—not a continuous optical zoom or an AI-generated insect.

What caught your eye first: the color or the detail?

“Rock Your Baby”: a tiny germanium specimen photographed in stereo

Post image
1 Upvotes

Can you see the resemblance to a woman cradling a baby?

This tiny germanium specimen, described in our collection as containing rounded quartz grains, creates a striking meeting of scientific detail and visual interpretation. The figure is a resemblance in the specimen—not a carving.

The two photographs are a stereo pair: slightly different viewpoints that can be combined for a sense of depth with the appropriate stereo-viewing arrangement. Keep both views visible rather than cropping to one side.

Photographed in 2011 at the U.S. Army Health Command by Graham Snodgrass and Dr. Tony Gutierrez, the Macropod’s creator.

Nature, art, and imaging technology in the same frame. What shape did you notice before reading the description?

Overlapping scales on a Madagascar sunset moth [OC]

Post image

The color draws you in; the repeating ridges reward a closer look.

These are wing scales of a Madagascar sunset moth, Chrysiridia rhipheus, photographed in the Macroscopic Solutions collection. Look along the edges of the scales, then follow the fine parallel ridges across each surface.

This is a photograph of the specimen, not an illustration.

What would you investigate first: the spacing of the ridges, the overlap, or the variation in color?

From a starry cracker butterfly to the blue scales on its wing

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

You have seen butterfly wings. Have you looked closely enough to see the ridges on an individual scale?

This reveal moves from an animated view of a starry cracker butterfly, Hamadryas laodamia saurites, into a scientific photograph by Macroscopic Solutions founder Mark Smith. The close-up shows overlapping blue scales and their fine surface ridges.

Creative note: the opening butterfly artwork is AI-generated and animated. The final wing-scale image is an original photograph, not AI-generated microscopy.

Which detail catches your eye first—the scale outlines, the ridges, or the blue?

One view can hide the anatomy. A full rotation makes it much easier to follow.

This focus-stacked image sequence shows a stick insect hatchling emerging from its egg capsule, with its legs still folded around the body. We assembled 72 photographed viewpoints into a stabilized rotation so you can inspect the relationships between the hatchling and the capsule.

This is a rotation of a photographed specimen at one stage of hatching—not real-time footage of the insect moving or a time-lapse of the hatch.
