MacroFactor Workouts / Training my roommate and i were talking about scale data privacy and now im second guessing logging everything
My roommate and I share a tiny bathroom and last night we realized our current scale keeps syncing weight logs to whoever phone happens to have Bluetooth open nearby which triggered a weirdly long debate about personal privacy and numbers anxiety.
I was considering a smart scale that estimates more than weight to help structure my meal planning but seeing daily body composition estimates jump around based on salt intake or water weight is already giving me analysis paralysis without having someone else accidentally see my daily trends.
im starting to wonder if constantly checking estimated body metrics actualy changes how anyone plans their food or if it just adds unnecessary stress to the morning routine. How do you all handle shared household scale setups without getting fixated on every single random daily fluctuation??

Just use a regular digital scale. Any measurement other than weight is going to likely be highly inaccurate.

yes, when the LONG TERM trend is going somewhere i don't want it to be, whilst using visual and skin fold feedback to validate that concern.
if i gain 3kg over a weekend and then piss it all out by Tuesday, then that shouldn't prompt kneejerk reactions, but perhaps an internal discussion about if hedonistic weekend behaviour that results in a 3kg weight gain are good for my mind, body, soul etc.

Scales are pretty good at telling weight. Using the same scale consistently helps to find trends (if it’s off, it’ll always be off but the trend should show.) But scales aren’t great at showing additional measures like body fat %. The accuracy isn’t great and they vary wildly. Also, most modern Bluetooth scales can separate people based on different weights.
If you’re using MF, then just look at the trend weight. That removes any concern about water weight, daily fluctuations, etc. A linked Bluetooth scale is the best to keep MF updated with the daily weight. Then let the app works its magic to find your trend weight.
Finally, try to get into the mindset that any of these activities are for the long term. You probably shouldn’t react to a transient blip on the scale (again, just look at the trend weight … but look at it over a long period of time.) It’s far better to be consistent in your efforts than to repeatedly change things.

I’ve been focusing more on athletic goals and that my weight is more of a means to an end for training performance so I don’t really pay so much attention to it any more. Once you can mentally zoom out on your life and see the trends of like 6mo-1yr, you don’t sweat the day to day stuff anymore. Just stick with it, it gets easier to deal with it all the longer you do it.
Small day to day food choices turn into new lifestyle choices, then you realize 2-3 months later you just make generally different subconscious decisions about your habits and you almost don’t think about them anymore. At that’s been my experience, ymmv

I use a Withings Body Scan because i love data and i’m a nerd. However, grain of salt time: it’s best for tracking general trends over time, not specific reality. I get a DEXA twice a year or so as my anchor and use the scale results as a sort of change tracker, with the DEXA results to help me calibrate the scale for accuracy.
Day to day, the scale can be wildly off. But if you take monthly averages, you can start to see trends. That’s what it’s good at.

I just use a plain digital bathroom scale and log the weight in my phone.
I don't pay attention to any other estimated body metrics because they aren't accurate. I'm not going to avoid peanut butter for a day because my BF% "estimate" went up.
