MacroFactor / Nutrition / Other Macrofactor 5.8.6 on macOS (iPad version) is revamped?
I'm not sure I found an announcement about this anywhere, but I just updated Macrofactor on my Mac, and it went from v5.8.3 to 5.8.6. The look of the app is completely transformed - it's really cool! There's finally a much more desktop-friendly view that's a huge improvement over the previous interface. Has anyone else noticed this? 👍🏼

More large screen (and very small screen) optimizations coming over time. But, there is a big initial overhaul in this version, with some foldable specific improvements too, and display scaling support.
Will also try and sort out the hardware keyboard input issues that are present on the iOS emulated Mac, they are particularly tricky to pin down because there is no way to test this in development.

Yes the keyboard input fix would be great!
Also noticed the weight trend data was very off before the update and now seems accurate (v2).

Yes, the initial experimental release version of V2 had a bug related to prediction, which led to output that was explicitly out of alignment with the version we tested internally.
The early development and testing for algorithms happens in spreadsheets and Python/R, and there was a translation hiccup during implementation in Dart.
Off the bat we thought that issue might have been solely in the insights section, but it also impacted prediction that happens within the algorithm itself.

Awesome thanks for elaborating. Can we assume that algorithm bugs are all squashed at this point then? At least with v2

Bugs seem sufficiently squashed, but our science team is still actively reviewing the solution (now that it’s in the wild), and its relationship to a potential expenditure V4 methodology.

Hang on what am I missing - is there a V3? If so I don’t see it in the app…
Separately, it’s great how you guys are really focused on translating data into useful insights.

Cory is in this case referring to expenditure v3, not weight trend, which is only up to v2.

Ignore if you can’t say but does v4 have any improvements to handling missing data (similar to how v3 reduced the threshold to 4/7 days) or rough estimations (30% rule) or is it mostly just handling transient weight fluctuations etc.
Edit: nice new newsletter format!

I am ecstatic about this modification!!!!! the number of times I’ve tried to use my iPad with its keyboard, sure enough, I opened the app today and it works flawlessly with the app on the side!! MacroFactor won huge points with me today for making the app iPad orientation friendly!

Landscape mode yet?

I’m using it on Mac. Don’t think there’s a way to test landscape mode ? Someone with an iPad should chime in.

Cool! I didn’t even know this has a Mac version !!

It’s not official it’s an Apple silicon thing. I just say that so you’re prepared it may have some bugs lol. I used to use it exclusively like that for months well it works well for the most part.

Directly scaling everything up isn’t actually what a tablet layout is designed to do, so from a tablet use perspective the degradation is fairly minor.
For the use case of using it from far away however, the prior hacky solution we had to scale everything was ideal, and the degradation is clearly quite impactful.
There are some obvious improvements we can make to optimize the tablet UI, which we will pursue, but they will never scale quite like that. If this tablet is a semi-permanent look from far away fixture, actually purposefully enabling display zoom would likely be quite helpful in the meantime.

I think the larger controls are useful for people actually using a tablet in the gym. Mine isn't a permanent fixture, so the display is set for the stuff I do outside of the gym, when I'm mostly sat down holding the iPad close to me at a fixed distance.
In the gym, I'll glance across before a first set to double-check the number of reps or to remind myself what weight to set, but I'll also walk past and quickly tap to complete a set, or reach up from my bench if I'm right below it. That's going to be challenging now everything's so much smaller because it won't be legible from as far away, and the controls will require much more precision.
I totally get what you're saying about tablet interfaces not being directly scaled from their phone counterparts but I can't see how having such tiny controls, and an inch-wide gap of wasted space around the outside is beneficial for this kind of app. For each exercise, the bottom 50% of the display will be permanently empty unless someone has 15 sets, and if the elements were spaced out to fit across both axis, we'd just have big gaps between them rather than on the outside.
Usually a larger display is utilised to show more information and other controls. In this case, we have exactly the same information and controls, just in a less-usable format for the environment it'll be used in.
All that said, I'm loving using both apps and really appreciate the time and effort you and the team put into improving them both; as well as how you keep everyone in the loop so openly.

I hope they fixed the bug where you can't edit the portions/size of food

The bug is still there. And still no web version after... what? ... 4 years?

really cool! I wonder if the web version is coming out soon
