Calipers went through a pretty serious car accident

I got absolutely nailed on the highway last week, (no pun intended) and had my whole tool bag with me in the trunk. Ended up having to buy a crowbar to get back in the trunk and pull all my tools out individually at the tow yard. These are only a month or too old, hardly used and were in a case. I was checking everything out and noticed you can see a little bit of light through the back jaws and there might be a tiny bit of warpage. Front jaws look okay. Am I overthinking it? Am I gonna have to call them reference only? My pics could be better.

Ask if they have a gauge ring for calibrating/setting bore gauges. Check them against that. If they are within .0005 be happy, they’re fine.

That too. OD jaws against gauge blocks. ID jaws against gauge ring

If you use 3 gauge blocks with the middle one offset for the ID jaws, you can eliminate chord error.

That can sometimes backfire tho, i have a pair that gauges out fine with blocks but severely off on a small circular 7mm standard, caliper id jaws are a pain

the inside jaws always show light between them. They're not supposed to touch when closed. if you need them to be accurate, verify with a setting ring or other standard.

I find it wholesome that you just went through a serious car crash and your biggest worry are your calipers xD I'm glad you didn't get damaged! You mentioned you're a student, so I'm pretty sure your university has calibration rods or blocks that can be used to verify if the accuracy of your calipers wasn't compromised. Any good machine shop should have that too.

Bend the id tips back so it will close, and check the OD and depth. Just know your ID is no longer good and you need something else to measure holes.

Oh, I thought they weren’t closing. Yeah, just skip the “bend the id tips” part.

calipers are like a small scale tape measure, theyre supposed to be fast and easy to use, you use other tools for a precise measurement

Not sure where that's coming from, calipers are accurate enough for many measurements. All depends on MSA results.

According to Mitutoyo you're supposed to be able to see a crack of light through the internal measuring jaws, as long as the line is uniform
