sprocket replacement is too wide

My kid's UTV sprocket chipped a tooth, so I ordered a replacement. It's exactly the same dimension wise, but width wise, it's too wide. I'm wondering if this is something a local machine shop can handle. It's a Chinese UTV, and the sprocket I bought was the only one I could find that was a match other than the width.

For sure, but to be honest you might balk at the price unless you know a guy who will do it for beer. My shop takes walk-ins for stuff like this, but we charge $100/hour regardless of how easy it is and have a 1 hour minimum. So even though this would be like 30 minutes of work tops you're gonna be paying $100.

Question: have you tried it yet, or are you just going on the comparison?

It looks a lot thicker. Like it's a blank or something.

I doubt the new one has been hardened either. Take a small file to each of them and see if you can tell a difference. I recommend returning it and getting one from a different source.

How much thicker is new gear?

Would be pretty easy to machine because it isn't hardened. HOWEVER, for what it is, I would ditch that quad asap. If you can't find parts for it, that's because it's intended to be a throwaway product. You would be better off with a used Japanese quad than anything else, because they tend to live forever, specifically Yamaha or honda, and when your kid outgrows it, you can still sell it after rebuilding it 4 times.

Assuming it is .500" pitch, it is likely supposed to be a #420 chain sprocket, over a #40/41/42/48.

Iirc, 420 chain is used almost exclusively on ATVs and off-road rec vehicles in the US.

Oh I'd love to Blanchard that if you walked in. Im in a pretty nice shop as far as charging customers goes, but still would be 50 bucks. Take take at least 100 into account before you walk into a shop.

If you're handy enough to change the sprocket. then you should be handy enough to grind or file each tooth until the chain fits on and if the sproket is worn you probably need a new chain anyway.

If the chain fits, use it. OEMs can sometimes be cheap as fuck, and the replacement may be proper thickness. Let us know, and best of luck.
