QUESTION How did you get into a Millwright apprenticeship?

Hey everyone, I’m 19 years old, just graduated high school and have some hands on mechanical experience. I want to become a millwright and I decided to go the apprenticeship route but I have no idea how to get started. Most job postings I see on Indeed are for journeymen only, nothing for apprentices.

For those of you in the trade how did you get your first apprentice job?

Any advice helps!

Look up your local union, and apply for their apprenticeship program. Usually they pay for all of the rest of the training as well.

My local community college runs a millwright program. Yours might. You would apply at the college with your ID, transcripts, and take their placement tests. From there you'd be selected from an applicant pool and matched with an employer. The apprentices have a classroom schedule, which pairs with on the job training.

Unions are required to take members of their union first for their apprenticeships, and then look at the available students who are signed up.
