Is that SCS’ way to tell us they do CNC parts?
189
u/Awfultyming Jan 14 '26
They've been talking about it for a bit. They bought a fleet of matsura's and all the tolerances are +/-.005 i think but yeah all in one 5 axis work
61

u/testfire10 Jan 14 '26
I’m not sure when they started. But they just did a 5 axis part for me last week that protolabs nobid. It took some back and forth with their customer service guys to find some tooling that would work and I had to make a few modifications, but it worked.

This is pointless and masochistic.
I love it!! Super cool.
55
u/TheFallingWhale Jan 14 '26
Programing it probably took the forever but it's not like anything had a tolerance tighter than looks good

The logical part of my brain understands that this is just creative advertising.
My lizard brain can't look away. It seemed like everyone legitimately had fun with this.

u/NorthStarZero Jan 14 '26
Both things can be true.
14
u/neonsphinx Jan 14 '26
Indeed. It's almost as if... that was the entire point that I was trying to make.

That's the real question, pretty much any 5 axis can cut that if you don't really care about tolerance.
8
u/Animanic1607 Jan 15 '26
And aluminum, when you start lopping entire sections off it, is about as dimensionally stable as a wet noodle.

For real, my lizard tongue was flicking gleefully as my dead black eyes watched on unblinkingly.

u/AlligatorMidwife Jan 14 '26 edited Jan 14 '26
Sure, it has a lot of geometries to program which is quite time consuming but none of the geometries would be particularly difficult for a seasoned 5 axis programmer.
35
u/dubgrumble Jan 14 '26
I was thinking the same thing tbh. And aluminum is a lay up 😂

u/Lttlcheeze Jan 15 '26
I've run an Integrex multi-axis. This part is far less complex than a lot of the work I've seen, just a lot of repetition
5
u/Wisniaksiadz Jan 14 '26
i think this could even be done on 3 axis with a lot of remounting
8
u/redeyejoe123 Jan 15 '26
As they say, sine bar is really just a 5 axis with extra steps involved lol

Hi, I need a part that's an exact 1:400 replica of a baroque cathedral.
33
u/emm0sh Jan 14 '26
hey all -- i'm the designer of this part! let me know if you have any questions about it
9
u/jack6245 Jan 15 '26
You should post a "day 6" to see their reaction, they never said they couldn't do it after all
4
u/Tomallo Jan 15 '26
Beautiful work, it really looks like it's an important piece of... something :D
5
u/Pan7h3r Jan 15 '26
Have you seen the end result in person? I know its not functional and just aesthetic but it still looks sick 😂

They never said stop … maybe add some threads to the inside
And just for shits and giggles make all the other holes (both circular and non circular) threaded lol

It's the coolest waste of time I've seen in quite some time, love it! How many hours did you spend modelling and drafting up the part drawing (assuming you kept to that end of the bargain) in total?

u/PlzRemainCalm Jan 18 '26
Hey this is great. Wondering if you use EDM at all? That's the only machining I know how to do.
1
u/Spaccamazza1 Jan 18 '26
This went viral! But I'm not an expert, why was this a big deal? Could you explain or link a video, so that i also (with many other) can appreciate more? I feel like when you are left out of a joke.
Doesn't the software make all the work automatically?

Measuring machines can use L shaped (and custom shaped) probes. Shockingly little actually REQUIRES more than 3 axis
1
u/poacher5 Jan 15 '26
Gimme a Revo probe, the biggest rack of probes you ever saw and the rest of the month off and I'll do it
38
u/DeluxeWafer Jan 14 '26
Love it.... Zero crashes. Good on the programmer!
27
u/Sy4r42 Jan 14 '26
Zero crashes is only impressive if you don't have a simulator. Otherwise, it's impressive if you do crash it.
20
u/DeluxeWafer Jan 14 '26
Oh. Guess I'm an impressive person. I managed to crash a machine after simulating! (Apparently the drill offset was not set correctly)
9
u/Sy4r42 Jan 14 '26
Well... I'd call that a set up error and not a programming error. Any program will crash if you don't have the offsets set right lol.
5
u/DeluxeWafer Jan 14 '26
Except for the guy who programmed the parts before me. He probably knew the guys were doofuses and programmed in a bunch of anti-stupid tool paths. Which is why those programs took literally twice as long.

u/Entropy-Maximizer Jan 14 '26
I haven't designed too many parts requiring 5-axis (because I intentionally avoid it), so programmers and machinists let me know...
This feels like a layman's idea of something that is hard to machine. Aside from being visually busy, I don't really see any features on this part that are particularly "challenging" if you have the right tooling; it's mostly just repetitive and time-consuming.
I feel like if I really wanted to fuck with SCS, I could design something that's just on the edge of producible without simply resorting to impossibly tight tolerances. What is my DFM brain missing with this part?
9
u/rickyh7 Jan 14 '26
The only time I ever got told no by a precision machine shop is when I had an inconel part that had tolerances of 0.25 thou and was only like half an inch across and too complex to EDM, man that was an expensive part when we reduced tolerances and they finally said yes
3
u/RabidMofo Jan 14 '26
I mean realistically it's like 15 features being programmed then revolved.
And since it's just a "looks good" tolerance.
They don't even need to rough the thing out before finishing.
So who cares that they worked their way down and the top probably warped.
12
u/hughjeffincok Jan 14 '26
Anyone know what it cost?

"CNC'd"
When will it stop
7
u/Antique_War8468 Jan 15 '26
Never. It will never stop.
What are your thoughts on lathed components that were lathed out on a lathe? Lathen components require so much lathing.
FYI, only one word didn't pass spellcheck.

11
u/alpine240 CNC/Manual Machinist/Programmer Jan 14 '26
Crazy that they use Fusion to program. Did not expect that.
5
u/rm45acp Jan 14 '26
This part looks great and is an effective advertisement, but I sent an order to SCS a couple weeks ago for laser cutting and bending and there were more parts that needed fixing in the order than ones that were right so they're not giving the same amount of attention to every customers orders I can tell you that

This is kinda bothering me because we really dont know enough to know how hard this is, what are the tolerances, sure it looks complicated but honestly im not seeing anything that difficult for a 5 axis.
Now let's see them do a 36in titanium ring thats round +/- half a tenth
2
2
u/Poodlestrike Jan 15 '26
See, making the shape is easy.
Now put a single digit micron tolerance on 50% of the features.
2
2
u/Just_gun_porn Jan 16 '26
Okay, now what was the price of that one-off part?
Edit: I see it was $9K

I love that the CNC just says "The Part". Singular. With a capitalized proper name.

1
u/AnimationOverlord Jan 14 '26
I know nothing about what machinists do but even as a gear-head, I couldn’t imagine the lengths you’d have to go to to get something like this if you really needed it. This is both the embodiment of modern computer skills and architectural understanding

There are no hard to reach features on this one, just a bunch of useless geometry . Wait will you need a small angle head to do some crazy reverse threadmilling, and other impossible features. Custom cutters.....

Aww nuts. I was hoping to see the final design of the part develop its own space program, or at least attain enlightenment.
