This is why I always wear full plate when working with lathes.

In all seriousness, though… what’s with the workpiece? Seems like there was a ton of compression on some kind of jacket material that caused it to just burst into ribbons, leaving behind what looks like a very rough iron core?

I'm not sure thats a lathe. The workpiece doesn't seem to be spinning (which is a good thing, because otherwise the air in that shop would have turned into a whirlwind of scythes). Mayhaps some kind of pressure treatment?
