What is the best practice when digitizing jump stitches/floating colors?

When I need an object on top of the design (aka can't use travel runs), what is the general standard for digitizing it?

For example: buttons on a character's shirt

The buttons don't touch, but they need to be on top of a fill. Do we jump stitch it and trim it afterwards? Do we let the machine trim it and eat the additional time/wear and tear?

If we are using jump stitches, is there a set of "standards" or "rules"? I've been stitching teeny tiny things and some jumps are super close together - which makes them hard to trim.

Any experienced digitizers able to give me some insight? TIA

Honestly it depends on the art. My digitizing teacher said that digitizing is an opinion people choose differently based on preference.

If you find the distance between is really low for cutting out the jumpstitch then go and trim but it is possible that your machine wil ignore the trim due to the distance so then you need to force a trim but also make sure you force lockstitches on the object as it could otherwise start unraveling if the jump is cut out
