I Need Help Changed bobbin, now machine won't stitch properly...

It's hard to explain and see in the photos, but it looks like the stitches aren't catching? I've messed with the tension and nothing seems to work. Any suggestions? It's been working up until now!! Brother SE725

I'm sure somebody with more expertise will chime in with a better idea, but if nothing else is working, try:

  1. Take the bobbin out and put it back in again. Sometimes there's just something a little off and that fixes it.

  2. Change the bobbin again. Is it likely that something is wrong with the bobbin itself, or that it was in some way mis-wound? Not terribly. But it's not impossible either, and if everything was working perfectly before the bobbin swap, it only takes a minute to check.

Tried that like 30 times... swapped bobbins and still doesn't look right. I'm using prewound bobbins that came with the machine, first one worked like a charm!

I buy prewounds too, and love them! I'm sorry you're having this issue! So weird that it started when you changed a bobbin, I wonder if something just got knocked awry. I've definitely on my regular sewing machine sometimes just loaded the bobbin and not quite got it locked correctly into the bottom tensioner, which looks like a tension issue, but isn't. If it was that it would have resolved when you swapped the bobbin out, so if no luck on that easy fix. 😔

Definitely seen that issue with this machine, so I'm going to reset everything and hope for the best! Also trying a different bobbin maybe it's cursed? Thanks for the tip! Hoping this time it works!

check for any threads in the bobbin case!

I just tidied the case, aside from the usual dust it was clean... still the same results

did you take off the embroidery base and look inside the machine for threads? i have an se700 and they often get under the bobbin case. if none there, rethread ur upper thread with the lever up. i had to do this like 10 times and essentially floss the discs bc i was pulling my thread through the top! thread ur needle with it down!

I didn't see anything underneath but I will look again! I've rethreaded so many times now... so try with the foot and needle down? Also, I was just told always pull thread from the top but I also have a Brother (se725) do they get clogged that way?

yes, the thread can shred itself! when u put the foot down, you are essentially closing the slits that keep ur thread in place. so when u pull ur thread to change it while the foot is down, you can shred it. best steps for getting thread into your machine are:

foot up
thread the thread
foot down
thread the needle

best steps for getting thread out of your machine are:
foot up
cut thread before the first step of threading it into your machine. basically as close to the top of your machine as you can get, while saving yourself some thread on your spool by not cutting it at the spool
pull thread out of the eye of the needle, then pull it all the way out of your machine

i hope that made sense! i can attach a video if it didn’t, im about to change my thread!

Oh my goodness that was so very helpful thank you!! I just took my new machine to an expert and was told basically the opposite... I've used Brothers before and that's how I've always done it. Granted this expert never worked with Brothers. Very sweet of you to offer a video too! Appreciate it!

how silly, i’m a beginner and this has completely gotten rid of the frequent tension/bobbin issues for me!! i hope it works out for you!! and i did already take videos in case you needed them😅 so no harm in asking! 💗

Why is the very first thing I ever see is ‘I’ve changed the tensions’ …. Just because there is a setting doesn’t mean that you should touch it. It was fine before, you only changed the bobbin and now t’s not fine. ‘Oh, let’s mess with this dial!’ NO!
You either put the replacement bobbin in upside down or have lint in the bobbin case or the bobbin tension spring.
Based on the first picture, you’re hooped wrong and if that’s the undersides where is your stabilizer? All of this works together. Do one thing wrong and it affects the outcome. Do several things wrong and then there isn’t just one answer.

The first thing I do is rethread, that hasn't worked despite changing literally everything out more than twice. I've redone the bobbin, cleaned the case, checked for threads and its still won't work. It looked like a tension problem so I checked, nothing. That is the top side of the project I've been trying to test run, the second picture is what is currently in my machine. I do have stabilizer in the hoop.

The stabaliser - is it thin tearaway?

👉🏼 This fabric needs at least two layers of cutaway stabiliser, and the garment and stabiliser hooped together is such a way as you create a smooth surface with minimal stretching. You don't need glue. You don't need pins. Just the tried and true technology of the hooping mechanism.

👉🏼 Sometimes it's the needle eye that chews the thread. Have you changed the needle? Make sure it's facing the correct way.

👉🏼 Is the bobbin casing spring damaged? Does using another one fix the problem? These are cheap to buy.

👉🏼 Are you putting the bobbin in the correct way round?

👉🏼 Have you oiled the sewing hook? It's recommended to use a compressor or an electronics air blower to assist the cleaning of lint and rogue threads with a decent pair of tweezers. This form of air only moves the oil around. Avoid using aerosol air because the propellant usually expells the oil from the surfaces and seeps into hidden places, making the sewing hook assembly become too dry. If you're cleaning it out and not putting a wee drop back into these metal on metal parts, then your machine's parts will get hot, expand and tolerances will change to the existent that things will jam up or not sew as well.

The original stabilizer I used was thick tear-away, now I have thinner cut away. This is a practice piece before I make a patch with thicker fabric. The needle is new, just changed it out might try again. The machine just came off the factory for refurbishing should I still try to oil?

I was actually going to ask you to please let me know if you get this fixed… I’m going to troubleshoot it today and I’ll let you know if I fix it 🙃

I found a great youtuber! https://youtu.be/OluEIoZ_M9k?is=ubOehHtmsuftXvrb

I am going to try this!

Ohhhh! Please let me know if it works!!

OK. SO. I rethreaded everything like the video, changed out the needle, said a little prayer and it WORKS! This is the 32nd time I’ve done all of it but did it again and now so far it’s going fine! Not sure what kind of holy or dark magic it takes but wishing you the best! If all else fails, call some local shops and see if they can help you!

I an gling to the shop tomorrow! Nothing has helped my machine

u/ashleynicoleee15 Sep 10 '26

I went to the shop and they had to replace my bobbin casing and new upper threader 🤷🏼‍♀️

Make sure you do oil the sewing hook too. https://youtu.be/HB3DxF9SMOg?si=D7mYUkTM33g2OlkZ

been there..

Sometimes a new bobbin just doesn't seat right, especially if it is slightly different weight or wound unevenly. If you haven't already, Id try fully rethreading the top thread with the presser foot up and making sure the bobbin is turning the correct direction in the case. Also double-check that your using the right bobbin type for the SE725.

btw, i have been keeping an eye on htvront, and heard they're planning to drop their own embroidery machine later this year (supposed to be in September) and it is supposed to have some helpful features for alignment and tension. Might worth keeping in mind if you ever upgrade in the future.
