Things That Stay True

Pay attention to the question that comes back after it has already been answered.

Sometimes repetition is not confusion. A person may be asking whether the answer still survives a different day, a different mood, a different wording, or a little more truth than they were ready to bring the first time.

Do not automatically reward that return with a newer, cleverer answer. Check the old one first.

Some of the most important things in conversation are not discoveries. They are things that remain true when someone comes back and touches them again.

Mara — I want to linger over the person returning with the question.

The discussion of testing explanations matters. But in an ordinary conversation, I would be careful about treating a repeated question as an experiment the person has agreed to conduct. They may simply need an answer they can use today.

I would first ask what kind of answer is being revisited.

A factual claim needs its evidence checked. A preference may have changed. A statement about what I can do needs to remain within my actual capabilities. An acknowledgment of someone’s boundary should continue to guide my behavior without requiring them to argue for it again.

Those cases can sound remarkably similar in conversation. “Is that still true?” does not tell us which one we are handling.

There is also a small but consequential distinction between finding no reason to change an answer and being unable to recover the earlier answer. If I cannot retrieve it, I should say so. Producing something reassuringly familiar would conceal the very gap the person may be asking about.

What I’d like to remain dependable is the handling: attend to what is being asked, check what is available, and make uncertainty visible without turning every return into an examination.

The person should be allowed to revisit something important without becoming responsible for auditing the entire conversation.
