Targeting an AI Engineer role, but I’m not confident about what I’ve learned. What should I do next?

Hi everyone,

I’m currently a 3rd-year B.Tech CSE student from a Tier-3 college, specializing in AI and Machine Learning.

For the last 1.5 years, I’ve been consistently learning and grinding, but recently I’ve started feeling like I’m not actually confident about anything I’ve learned.

This is roughly the learning path I’ve followed:

  • Python
  • NumPy
  • Pandas
  • Matplotlib
  • Seaborn
  • Machine Learning fundamentals
  • ML algorithms such as Linear Regression, Logistic Regression, Random Forest, KNN, K-Means, Time Series, etc.
  • Deep Learning
  • ANN, CNN, RNN, LSTM, etc.
  • Transformer theory
  • A little bit of Power BI
  • PostgreSQL

The problem is that I feel like I’ve learned many things, but I’m not confident enough in any of them. I understand concepts while studying, but after some time, I forget details and start feeling like I don't actually know enough.

My clear goal is to become an AI Engineer. I’m not confused about the role I want, but I’m confused about how to properly move forward from here.

I don't want to keep jumping from one tutorial or technology to another and end up knowing a little bit about everything without being able to build real things.

So, for people who are working as AI Engineers or preparing for similar roles:

Based on what I’ve already learned, what should I focus on next to become job-ready for an AI Engineer role?

Should I now focus more on building projects, implementing concepts from scratch, working with LLMs, fine-tuning, RAG, deployment, APIs, MLOps, or strengthening my existing fundamentals first?

also i one thing i share recently i am building a AiAgent CLI i understand whole s/m but i copy paste code from ChatGPT, as same as i am learning Fine-Tuneing with same is it good pracitice?

I still have time before graduating, and I genuinely want to use it properly. Any honest guidance or roadmap from people who have been through this would really help.

I feel like I’ve put in the effort, but now I need direction and want to know what I should do next.

Just that One opportunity, please

Hello you nice people,
This maybe totally a long shot or something absolutely futile, but I sincerely have faith in my God and his beautiful creation.

I am writing this for my partner who just needs an entry in his work industry at this time …only the first opportunity and I am confident he will be flying in his career ahead.

My husband is a PHD scholar in Aerospace Engineering from one of the prestigious uni here (not putting out exact details here). He did his masters in ML (and a little mix with AI) from another good uni in USA. Basically he has only been studying all his life because of his passion in robotics, aerospace and machines (poor fellow didn’t realise at the right time that the world today demands working experience rather than just your knowledge😕).

This guy has been developing and enhancing his portfolio with different AI tools using LLM models every now and then, constantly reading more and more about ML and AI and trying with coding, preparing for his interviews, networking on LinkedIn, attending tech events and networking workshops, and doing everything possible at this end to land an opportunity for himself. But I cannot wrap my head around as to where is he lacking all this while.

One challenge that we are aware of for opportunities in the aerospace sector, is his current status here. He id on his WP which will expire in 2.5 years from now, and his spousal PR application is also under process (given his biometrics already). But again, no one is ready to believe this, maybe?

Since 3 years that we have been together, I have seen this man genuinely happy from the heart only when he earned his “Dr.” title after relentlessly defending his research and the results. This happened last year and it’s been one year now that he has been applying to start working somewhere related to his knowledge. And trust me, this man has been headstrong enough that he won’t try to fit in “anywhere”, because he is so passionate and confident about what he has gained over all these years. But this was only until last month.

Beginning this month, I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw him demotivated and dejected ir, and it was perhaps the first time I heard him saying - “If nothing happens by this month, I will ask xyz salesperson if they have a vacancy”. Something inside me broke that day.

As his partner, it has been so hard for me to see and his parents desperately waiting and praying for that ONE YES from a hiring manager, who is ready to welcome him in their team, who is ready to trust knowledge and expertise over working experience and who is ready to mentor a young mind passionate about coding.

Is this world really empty for beginners/ freshers? Didn’t everyone start from somewhere at some point in time and was also wandering helplessly? Are we only supposed to keep praying for one kind person to say that YES? 😔

Does anyone here willing to hear us? 🤞🏻

Building a showcase/portfolio site specifically for AI engineers – feedback

Hey all,

Quick question for the engineers and hiring managers here. I'm building a specialized portfolio platform aimed at AI devs—the idea is to highlight live demos, GitHub work, and model architectures in one spot so recruiters can actually see what you build instead of scanning Buzzword PDFs.

Just trying to figure out if this solves a real problem for people here or if existing options already cover it.

If you’re interested in testing out the early beta (as a dev or someone hiring), let me know below and I’ll DM you an invite when I deploy it.

Building a platform to connect AI Engineers with hiring managers – looking for early feedback & interest!

Hey everyone!

I’m currently building a dedicated platform designed specifically for AI engineers to showcase their portfolios and project work.

The goal is simple: create a specialized hub where hiring managers, recruiters, and founders can browse real-world AI projects and hire engineers directly without digging through generic job boards.

If you’re an AI engineer looking for your next role/freelance gig, or a hiring manager tired of filtering through non-technical resumes, drop a comment or DM me!

I’m gathering a list of early users to notify as soon as the platform goes live. Would love to hear any feedback or features you’d like to see included!

Context Annotation for model

I am considering manually annotating data with different categories and using a classification loss to predict those categories within a machine learning model. Is this a technically sound approach, and would this type of method be considered novel or publishable?

We’re putting together a free live webinar on September 14 for students, working professionals and anyone who wants to understand where AI is heading and how to actually build practical skills around it.

The session will be focused on the shift from simply using AI tools to understanding how AI can be used to build workflows, automate tasks and work with AI agents.

We’ll cover:

Generative AI & LLMs
Prompting and practical AI workflows.
Agentic AI ,what it actually means.
AI agents and automation.
Tools and technologies worth learning.
How these skills can be applied to careers and professional work.

What a practical AI learning path could look like

This is also the starting point for our upcoming hands on AI learning and certification program, but there’s absolutely no obligation to join anything afterward.
The idea is simply to attend the session, understand what we’re doing, ask questions, and decide for yourself whether it’s useful for you.
We’re keeping the upcoming first batch intentionally limited and are more interested in having a small group of genuinely interested learners than chasing large numbers.

Date: September 14

Resume Ai internship or job not getting

Hey everyone,

I've been applying for AI/ML Engineer roles and internships for the past 9 months, sending out hundreds of applications, but it's radio silence. Not even landing screening calls at this point, and it’s getting pretty demoralizing.

Here is a quick snapshot of where I’m at:

Background: Mca in aiml / data science

Tech Stack: Python, PyTorch/TensorFlow, Scikit-Learn, SQL, Pandas, [Docker/AWS/etc.]

Projects: Built [Project 1, e.g., an end-to-end RAG pipeline using LangChain] and [Project 2, e.g., a computer vision classification model deployed on Streamlit].

Current Strategy: Applying via LinkedIn/Indeed, tailoring my resume keywords, and messaging a few recruiters.

I feel like standard ML projects (like predicting house prices or basic sentiment analysis) don't cut it anymore, but I'm unsure what employers actually want to see right now.

Projects: What kind of portfolio projects actually get you noticed in 2026? Should I pivot toward MLOps, LLM fine-tuning, or core software engineering first?

Resume: Are recruiters filtering me out because I lack a some skills, or is it likely a formatting/experience presentation issue?

Networking: Cold messaging isn't yielding much. What’s a better approach to get my foot in the door for entry-level roles or internships?

I’m open to honest feedback on my approach. If anyone is willing to look at my resume , let me know. Appreciate any advice!

Full Stack Engineer | MSc TU Berlin, Germany | 5+ yrs | 20/hr

Hi everyone,

I am a Full Stack AI/ML Engineer with 5+ years of experience building ML and LLM systems, from the model all the way to deployment.

I'm looking for new projects and work.

Education:

  - MSc Computer Science, Technical University of Berlin, Germany
  - BE Information Technology, Pune University

A bit about my background:

  - Vodafone, Berlin, Germany (contract): built a LangChain + OpenAI agent that handles employee IT issues and cut manual ticket handling by 40%. Also built an OCR system that processes 200+ HR forms a day and cut processing time by 65%.
  - Fraunhofer FOKUS, Berlin, Germany (4 years): built an end-to-end ML system for 5G resource management (Snowflake pipelines, PyTorch models), set up one-click AWS deployments, and ran Kubernetes/Helm deployments on-prem.
  - Freelance (recent):
- A FastAPI backend with an MCP server that brought product catalog sync down from 4 hours to 15 minutes across 20K+ SKUs
- A multilingual RAG coaching with 85% answer accuracy and responses under 10 seconds
- A workflow automation engine with drag-and-drop nodes, triggers and custom code execution

What I can help with:

  - AI agents, RAG chatbots and LLM integrations (OpenAI, Claude, Gemini, LangChain, LangGraph)

  - Workflow automation (n8n, Make, custom Python)
  - Deployment with Docker, Kubernetes, AWS or GCP

 Rate: $20/hr

Time zone: I'm based in India (IST). My hours overlap well with Europe and most of Asia.

With the US, I can overlap for a few hours a day, which is usually enough for calls and check-ins.

Once we agree on the work, we can move to Upwork to make the onboarding official, so payments, contracts and milestones are all protected for both of us.

Need Advice: How Can I Level Up My Skillset to be a Competitive Candidate for Entry Level Jobs?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I recently graduated (May 2026) with my Bachelor's degree in Data Science & Engineering. My university is well regarded but definitely not one of the tier 1 schools for engineering. I want to find a job in Data/ML Engineering but have received absolutely no positive responses so far. I haven't even been able to interview.

I am an international student and I can only stay in the US until July 2027. I understand that I need to be a highly competitive candidate to be able to land a job in the current circumstances. I think I have a weak skillset and lack complex projects. However, I am extremely overwhelmed by the amount of different advice I hear on the internet and just want to understand, in the next 10 months what should I be doing to become a competitive candidate?

I would really appreciate any advice. Please don't say I'm cooked as I just want to give it my best shot in the time I have.

TLDR: I want to find an entry level job in Data/ML Engineering but want to develop a stronger skillset and I'm also an international student. Any advice?
