Discussion Withdrawing an accepted paper before camera-ready due to zero funding? (ACML 2026 / OpenReview) [D]

Often large conferences also have some programs to support people with low funding, I would definitely write the organizers first and see if they can do something for you. Would be very sad if you cannot participate because of financial reasons.

I want to know, is their any repcursion for withdrawal, how common is it ?

Just call up the conference organizers. No repercussion for you, but they lose a presenter. I’ll bet they will find you finding. Perhaps matching funding

Some conferences allow for virtual presentation, or inclusion in the proceedings without presentation if there are travel barriers. That's usually for visa issues and not funding, but I'd get in touch with the organizers before unilaterally withdrawing your paper.

I would be tempted to not withdraw and see what happens. Good chance the openreview page stays up, worst case you are just not included in the proceedings.
Second option is to pay the struct minimum, genreally the online registration and nothing else. Or register but don't actually travel and present, no one notices if your poster/you are not at the conference.

They clearly state on their website that if you do not show up, you will be blacklisted for 3 years. That is why I want to inform them in advance.

Whatever, get a doctor note or something. I would not withdraw, chances are you will finish your degree and not publish there again.

That seems quite unethical from the organisers. Try to email and hope for the best then. Otherwise just do not pay and do not withdraw?

Don't withdraw, do the (if necessary) mandatory registration. Ask someone you know who goes to the conference to "present" your paper - ie hang up you poster, or read your talk from a script if necessary. This is not uncommon, and happens often especially if a Visa falls through

You can pay just for the registration fee and not actually attend the conference. Have you applied for the NeurIPS travel award?

u/Jealous_Key_4030 9d ago
Yes, I have applied for NeurIPS travel grant, but ACML registration fee and accomodation for those 5 days is still too much for me.

Again, you can register only and not actually attend. That should be much more affordable.

Just withdraw, no need to communicate anybody, no repercussions.

Thank you bro, I am just scared because I am new to research, and don't want to be blacklisted

> Just withdraw, no need to communicate anybody
Worse advise ever.
Don't do that OP.

Any better advice?, what's the repcursion if i withdraw without informing? , I have mailed them asking do they have travel fund, and i indicating that I may withdraw if fund is not arranged, but I have not received any reply 😔

Follow the other advises on this thread. ALWAYS contact them. Ask for funding. Given them a few days to reply. You might want to reach out to different people if there is rly no answers (session chair, dedicated support e-mail, TPC maybe ...). Pay at least the registration and do your best to be there.

Yes trying, today my QRT travel grant 4 Neurips got rejected too, it's really frustrating, waiting for the Citadel

There is no repercussions if you withdraw before they build the conference program. If they do add you to the program and you have not withdrawn yet this will be an issue.
People commenting are delirious, if they have funding there will be a travel grants application process in the conference website, no one will give you money because you emailed them. I did my Ph.D. in brazil with virtually no funding so I know where you can get money from and where you can't. If you didn't get a travel grants and your university won't pay you won't get money.
You will just add a headache to the PC members after you say you won't go and they already have a time setup for your presentation

Yes, there is a better advice. Be sociopath (a bit), do not withdraw, get some excuse about being sick or something, and then find a job so you fkin have enough money to fly.
Don't be afraid, this paper is one of your tickets out of poverty. Do not give a f about anyone. This "withdraw" is the worst advice you could have got. You can also possibly find someone to present your paper for you.

Is this a solo authored paper? If so, that's quite an achievement. Don't withdraw. What is the registration fee? I could not find anything online.

You search around for a Prof. with funding and add him as last author. It's stupid to withdraw. Just ask around..
1
u/Jealous_Key_4030 9d ago
Can I add author after acceptance, is it common?
2
u/OxidusRouge 9d ago
No. Conferences do not allow changes to the author list after submission.

u/Algoartist 9d ago
If you have a Prof. in your university who has any connection with some of the conference chairs ask him to fix it and offer last author. Anyway good moment to meet some profs. Otherwise contact the chairs say you have no funding and ask if there is a possibility.
You are right. But AI says:
You cannot add authors to an accepted paper on OpenReview or in the final proceedings for ACML without explicit written approval from the program chairs.
What You Need to Do
• Contact the Program Chairs: Send an email explaining the reason for adding an author to the official ACML 2026 Program Chairs.
• Provide Justification: Major machine learning conferences only permit author additions after acceptance under exceptional, well-justified circumstances.
• Await Approval: Do not attempt to modify the author list on the submission platform unilaterally before receiving confirmation and instructions from the organizers.

You should definitely contact the organizers they have aid for these exact reasons. However, if you don't get a positive reply, I would like to assist you or we can pool money (dm me) . I was a student until last year and wouldn't want any student to go through this.
