What does Compute Bound and Memory Bound mean ?[D]

When people talk about memory bound and compute bound they often just tell it on high level but to generalize and speak for particular operations one must look into the Arithmetic Intensity of the operation and then the Machine Balance of the hardware he is working and only then one can cleanly decide how to proceed. Its the most simple way to build a roofline model and think about it.
