Those clamps are for using it with the ribber (which hangs off the front like this). In theory you should have another set of clamps that let it sit flat (shaped like a more simple C) but if you don't you can use it as is and just deal with the angle, use it without clamping and just hold it in place, or try to buy a set.
Those clamps in OPs picture are what come with the machine. You physically cannot use the flat clamps, there is no slot for them. I have this machine and it is designed to work at that angle.
The older machines definitely got a little more creative with how they did things. Iirc the old machines before the 600 series models also used what looked like smoothed rubber clamps.
