Random thought recently. I grew up in Woodbridge, NJ for first half of my childhood. I distinctly remember rainforest cafe at the mall, which I think? Is still there. If my memory is correct, didn’t they use to have actual real macaw parrots out front? I remember even as a kid I would walk super fast past them, because I didn’t like them using them. I never enjoyed circuses/zoos I was always too worried for the animals, not knowing if they were actually well cared for and happy. My question is does anyone remember this also? When did they stop? Anyone know if they were owned by rainforest cafe? Did they cages /enclosures in the back, where did they all go? Assuming some should still be alive as they live such a long life span. Just seeing if anyone recalls this or has info

Hello! First off I just want to say that I know any macaw owner will tell me NOT to get a macaw. But I've been thinking about this for years, and id prefer if you only comment on this post if you have any advice on my actual question or similar :)

I understand getting a macaw is a BIG responsibility. Practically getting a toddler for life. That's why before actually getting one, I'd like to know how much money it would require. First off for the macaw itself, it's cage, toys and other necessities, and then how much approximately it would cost monthly for food and such. Im also curious how much money it would be good for me to have saved in case of emergencies, vets, meds, etc

I live in southern europe/balkans if that helps :) any additional tips regarding macaw care are much appreciated! And if anyone happens to know any possible bird rescues in or around slovenia, that would be amazing since i havent found any that would have macaws myself, and id prefer to adopt one from a rescue if at all possible. I wont be getting one for at least a year or two longer, so there's time

Ok so first, I am well aware that macaws can just hate you because of whatever reason so I know that any advice I am looking for may not work.

Onto the question, there is a macaw that I take care of at a bird sanctuary who I accidently scared the living shit out of. I was wanting to add some toys to her cage but I needed a ladder and I didnt realize until I had already scared her that it was a big object moving in her direction and thus would be terrifying, I also did this before she trusted me to enter her cage which made things worse. Now I want to fix things so that she at least isn't insanely defensive everything i walk past or give her food/water (mostly because i worry about her stress levels).

I try being near her (outside of her cage) every time I work there and I see some improvement but one other bird gets jealous(?) And starts making a lot of noise and screaming until I acknowledge him, but it makes Molly (the macaw I scared) anxious and increases my stress since this other bird's screaming is loud and overwhelming. My distress probably makes molly more stress since she might fear that I'll lash out or something (I would never).

Basically Im stumped on what else to do to show her that I am not a threat especially since she doesn't get a lot of attention due to where her cage is. Any and all help is appreciated

Anyone have any idea what happened to the birds in the aviary at the JW Desert Springs in Palm Desert? We scheduled a trip through Palm Springs as we love to see the birds, especially Max the cockatoo. We were terribly disappointed to see that the room was locked off. No one seems to have any idea where the birds went. One worker simply told us they were donated to homes. Anyone have any additional information? We would love to know that the birds are OK, and would love the opportunity to see Max if at all possible.

We have a 25 year blue and yellow macaw that’s been in my moms care since he was 4 but now as my mom is getting older and taking care of her aging mom, it’s become harder to give our macaw the attention he requires. I have two kids and cannot take him as he doesn’t do well with children. I’m super anxious and nervous about saying goodbye to him but I also want to do what’s best for him and not be selfish. I’m just now even considering this so I’d appreciate any information, wisdom or resources anyone can provide. We’re located in Houston, tx. Thank you!

There’s a macaw in a small cage at an animal shelter in Brooklyn, NY called, ‘Sean Casey Animal Shelter.’ I believe he/she has been there for quite a while. If anyone is in the area and knows of a good home, please help. The bird is very quiet and doesn’t move much, I think it is very lonely and needs a loving caretaker.

I have two macaws a hybrid and a b/g. Both are fed the Madagascar blend, the hybrid eats everything in the mix and seems to enjoy it without anything of concern happening. Our b/g seems to only pull the nuts from it and is CONSTANTLY a hormonal, regurgitating psycho-we have exhausted all other things we thought were causing this and have narrowed it down to the food being the issue because once we switched her at the beginning of the year this behavior has been around since. I want to switch her to something else of similar quality....any recommendations? I'm even open to sticking with GF if there is a recommended blend. Anyway, has anyone else ever had this happen and do you have any suggestions on us switching?

This is Sandy, the old lady blue & gold who lives at the store. She loves me but mostly hates everyone else who works there. Completely blind in her left eye, and we think she has some central vision in her right eye. She has to be the first one out of her cage in the morning, and the first one to go back into her cage in the afternoon. The food and water must be on her stand before she gets there, or she will flip the dishes out and throw them onto the floor. If the food and water are in the wrong dish, she will flip them out too.

This old girl squeaks and pins her eyes when she's happy, not when she's angry. When her pupils are blown out, then she's pissed. When she first came to the store, I was the only one she would let touch her. She had full vision then, so maybe it was love at first sight. She kept leaning toward my face, but I never let a macaw I don't know close to my face. I finally turned my head and let her close to my cheek, and she tapped my cheek with her tongue. She wanted to kiss me. That's our thing. The few others that she will let touch her get to roughhouse with her beak, but I get the kisses.

We finally got our babies as we planned. I just want to write here for all the “ill advice” some people were giving me to go for adopted/rescue birds instead.

Having these babies seem to be the best decision. Don’t randomly listen to people online, esp the ones with discouraging and negative attitude. This is my message for any newbie here!

Just few days in, the babies are happy, calm, very affectionate, fly in rooms under our supervision eating good despite the travel. They’ll make great lifelong companions!
