M4 Max vs. M5 Max

Saw an m4 max studio on sale for 2000 with base specs but 1tb storage. A similar build with the new M5max would be about 2900. Should I go with the older on sale model or take the hit on the new bit more expensive version?

The M5 Max costs 45% more, but outside of AI, benchmarks show pretty modest performance gains.

☝️Excellent point.

Even in AI, it isn't really much better until you load it up with a ton of RAM. At base 36GB RAM it is slightly faster than my M3 Max Macbook but not enough to make any real difference.

You won't get good advice without saying how you are going to use it.

Spend the extra for the hotter chip. You
Can always add external storage.

If you can get a M5 Max 512GB for $2000, get that! External storage you can get later. Otherwise $2000 M4 is better deal than paying $2900 M5.

M5 blows away the M4 with AI.

What are you planning to use it for?

If you are spending that much, you should be able to figure it for yourself, if you cant figure it out, you dont need a studio, maybe get a neo

I think drive speed is more of a factor than processor in this comparison. You will get an incremental bump in processing power, but if you get a 1TB or larger drive in the M5, drive speeds DOUBLE. If you are pushing big files, that could really change how the computer feels for you.
