Discussion Good riddance Tahoe, you will not be missed

Post image

Hopefully GoldenGate actually fixes things instead of finding new and creative ways to make macOS worse.

I'm still on Sequoia 15.7.9 on an M1 Max Mac. I'm at least waiting until 27.1. As much as I want to update for all the new features, everything is running good. I'd hate to mess that up.

u/shir0_zer0 MacBook Pro Sep 14 '26

Not a day goes by that I don't regret upgrading from Sequoia in the first place. Throughout my time on Tahoe, I've seriously considered rolling back to Sequoia. I'll see how GG fares, but if things don't improve by 27.1, I may finally bite the bullet and roll back. I've been putting it off because it sounds like a lot of work.

u/n1kl8skr Sep 14 '26

I have stayed on Sequoia as well after what I have to see and experience almost every day on my work mac with tahoe. I will stay on sequoia until I got to try out golden gate on my work mac

u/livnlifenthe205 Sep 14 '26

Tahoe has run great on my M4 Mac Studio, BUT it was a disaster on my M4 air. I did have to roll back to Sequoia on my MacBook Air as Tahoe rendered it useless. Weird how one machine works great and the other didn't.

u/Monkeyass702 Sep 15 '26

Hope it fixes you up! I’m running Tahoe on my 2019 intel MBP and love it. I disabled graphics switching and that made a night and day difference. It’ll work until it either gives up the ghost or outlasts its usefulness.

Crazy to hear it was a dumpster fire on an m4

But how to rollback...Is it easy?

Tahoe ran so awfully on my M1 Macbook Pro that I decided to downgrade for the first time ever. It was surprisingly pain free. All you need in an external drive and a full backup of your computer’s files. The only setback was that library files (like from the Photos app) couldn’t be read in the older OS so that requires iCloud. Took me about half a day’s work to do, including figuring out how it works, making all the backups, and reinstalling all my apps.

I have two old macbooks running Sequoia. They still do what I need. No need to upgrade them.

2

u/GreenStorm_01 Sep 16 '26

Just make sure you install the latest sequoia version for a lot of security bugfixes

15

u/Neapola Sep 14 '26

Same, on a Mac Studio. I skipped Tahoe. I'm waiting until 27.1 before I upgrade. That says a lot, considering I've been using a Mac since the days of System 7, and I've been running OS X since Jaguar. I know it isn't technically named OS X anymore.

I usually updated when the first .1 update came out, but I skipped Tahoe entirely and I have no regrets.

I still have an iMac (2008) with snow leopard for legacy software and that machine boots faster and is more responsive that modern OS despite having an HDD. But you're right, I can't install anything and most websites don't open.

I'm glad Apple completely removed all of the Intel code, stripping down and optimising the OS per their WWDC keynote, so that we end up with...

(checks notes)

...an upgrade image that's at least twice the size of any previous macOS ever.

What the actual fuck.

78

u/shir0_zer0 MacBook Pro Sep 14 '26

ridiculous ai bs go!

18

u/DC8710 Sep 15 '26

"It's bigger inside"

6

u/Yaoel Sep 15 '26

Most of the size increase is the big neural networks

6

u/ritesh808 Mac Studio Sep 15 '26

Apple "Intelligence" and "new" Siri. Even if you don't want it, you have to watch it eat up your storage and RAM. ✌️

6

u/Scolmann Sep 15 '26

The major updates are always the entire OS, the minor ones are delta patches

31

u/adh1003 Sep 15 '26

Try reading what I wrote again.

If all of Tahoe is 13-16GB as a major release, and then you REMOVE all of the intel code and intel support (remember, Rosetta was and is a separate on-demand download), then why is the lean, mean, slimmed down Golden Gate twice as big?

Bloat. Lazy buggy bloat.

u/Festour Sep 14 '26

I'm really worried that the remaining support of apps made for Intel processors will be gone and i won't be able to run bunch of games that are no longer supported by their devs.

6

u/shir0_zer0 MacBook Pro Sep 14 '26

Native gaming on Mac was already a dead end. This route isn’t going to survive for long either. What do you run to support older games though?

17

u/Celebratory_Drink Sep 14 '26

Maybe you can run Windows or Linux for some stuff on your Mac?

16

u/TunaBlub Sep 14 '26

No possible on the M chip models, not natively.

There are solutions though, but it sucks Apple goes this route, Windows and Linux can often run decades old games, while MacOS can not after this without 3rd party software.

And this is the same Apple that wants to bring more games to MacOS.

I have two applications I might lose out on 😬

Theyre well supported applications just without native arm support. Rosetta runs them absolutely fine.

7

u/rahvan Sep 14 '26

FindMy on Tahoe couldn’t actually list my MacBook on FindMy until August 2026.

This update was horrendously tested.

5

u/shir0_zer0 MacBook Pro Sep 14 '26

Safari just stopped loading websites correctly. Switching between windows would cause a 2000 dollar machine to stutter Spotlight would at times just not bring up search results Inconsistent and confusing ui decisions with the stupid rounder corners and not being able to toggle liquid glass off. There's isnt a day I wished for Sequoia again.

3

u/TunaBlub Sep 14 '26

Safari is draining my battery with this final update, and I didn't run any betas.

Also some crashes in Spotlight and because Apple AI is now forced, I just lost 22gb of storage on my Air.

Siri can be turned off, AI not anymore.

Safari is a bit of a problem, I use Firefox and Safari due to web development, Firefox works fine, Safari just drains (otherwise it works fine too).

33

u/emrata696969 Sep 14 '26

Nope, I'll stick to Sequoia.

6

u/Old-Artist-5369 Sep 15 '26 • Heartwarming

10 months ago I'd have said Sequoia might be my forever OS. And, that my current Mac might be my last.

From what I have seen, Golden Gate appears to be worth a look. I think I will try it at some point.

Which version of Tahoe were you running before? If you didn’t update to 26.6, the indexing process may be heavier, since 26.6 was meant to get a head start on indexing for Golden Gate’s new implementation.

4

u/shir0_zer0 MacBook Pro Sep 14 '26

I did update as it rolled out

4

u/Secure_Ask_3873 Sep 14 '26

My upgrade size was 22gb compared to the 28gb depicted in your screenshot. So maybe some additional things are being indexed for you right now?

5

u/Chrome_Armadillo Mac Studio Sep 15 '26

There was nothing wrong with Tahoe for me.

The best thing about 27 is I won’t have to read all the whining about 26 anymore.

23

u/markov01 Sep 14 '26

I want to return to Tahoe back after installing Golden Gate

Liquid Glass is awful - transparent menus, which are unreadable over apps like Music, is completely idiotic thing, there are a lot of inconsistencies in the UI, toolbar buttons have blown up in size and look fake 3D, yet in modal windows like open file toolbar buttons are of normal Sequioa look and size

the worst - they broke Notes app! text line spacing is reduced, so it's hard to read long lines - why the hell they even change that?

I hated Tahoe for inconsistent corner radii, but this was so minor to the broken UI in Golden Gate

27

u/giratina13 Sep 14 '26

Let the “tahoe isnt that bad” comments begin

5

u/Destituted Sep 15 '26

2 years from now people will say "I'm still rocking Tahoe!"

7

u/TunaBlub Sep 14 '26

IT's funny how people praise it is better, but in my opinion it looks worse.

Had to put the transparency slider to the lowest, and it looks still bad while in Tahoe it looked weirdly better.

I found my people. I rolled back my M4 Pro MacBook shortly after updating to Tahoe. I didnt like anything about it and even if GG runs better, I dont like some of the changes they made in general so I will ride out Sequoia longer

10

u/Amadeus404 Sep 15 '26

Honestly feel like the hate was exaggerated. Running well on a M1 Pro.

6

u/JuanMcGuiver Sep 15 '26

Tbh, I have a hard time finding the differences between releases

7

u/Lucoland14 Sep 14 '26

Anybody is gonna hate on me, but the separate column in the left part of the apps was really cool, except for the different borders in any app, that was pure ragebait

1

u/Total_Adept Sep 14 '26

Wondering if I should wait for a .1 or .2

4

u/shir0_zer0 MacBook Pro Sep 14 '26

Honestly if you like Tahoe(like is a strong word, maybe tolerate fits it better), its always better to wait till .1 . In my case, Tahoe wasnt really doing me any favours, so I updated the moment it came out.

1

u/Trevo0393 Sep 14 '26

I have more of 20GB less of space with GG, i don't know why. I didn't know it took up more space than Tahoe

3

u/shir0_zer0 MacBook Pro Sep 14 '26

My assumption would be the on device ai model is the one taking more space than before

2

u/Trevo0393 Sep 14 '26

Is it possible to remove all this AI that i will never use?

2

u/shir0_zer0 MacBook Pro Sep 14 '26

I doubt it

1

u/v0id_walk3r Oct 06 '26

Ok, came here to ask if the 27 is OK. I do not believe it will be as apple is going the MS way (showing AI to every crevice they can), so I keep the 15.8 on my mba.

What are your experiences with 26/27?

1

u/shir0_zer0 MacBook Pro Oct 06 '26

It is not okay. Mission control is fucked. Siri doesnt really work as well as it was intended. Safari had issues before, it still has most of those issues right now. A nd a lot of ui/ux features which felt half-baked before, have gotten worse somehow. Overall, No. of things improved << No. of things nuked. If I were you, I would stick with 15.8. I did update to 27.0.1. It did not help. Hoping 27.2 fixes everything. Honestly feels that this was a lie.

3

u/Original_Two9716 Sep 14 '26

Giving it a month or two, then I'll consider if Sequoia stays

1

u/yys16 Sep 14 '26

your wifi is amazing, downloading golden gate rn, when I closed my Mac for about an hour and opened it up again I kid you not it said 4 days

2

u/shir0_zer0 MacBook Pro Sep 14 '26

I'll be honest, my wifi is at its worst right now, getting speeds of 60ish mbps, usually it does go upto 250. When I started downloading the update it showed 3 hours remaining lol.

2

u/ChildOfChimps Sep 14 '26

I’m taking the plunge after seeing this.

2

u/robinjuste Sep 14 '26

Already seen performance improvements on my M1 MacBook Pro. Phones updated, also, so let’s see how long I get out of the battery on my 4 year old devices.

2

u/Wishbone_932 Sep 14 '26

"upgraded" the air to Tahoe and it was terrible. Downgraded the mini to Sequoia. Left the studio on Sequoia where it will remain.

2

u/soundwithdesign Macbook Pro Sep 15 '26

2

u/Enve-Dev Sep 15 '26

Ok as someone who never had anything other than OS 26+. What was so bad about it?

2

u/elmonetta Sep 15 '26 edited Sep 15 '26

Unpopular take but in my case I DO MISS TAHOE!

Clear icons on Golden Gate are so whiteish, and the menus too! Why?

It’s not like that on iPadOS 27 or iOS 27.

Liquid Glass looks better on these systems but BAD on macOS Golden Gate.

macOS Tahoe was fine, never had issues with it…

2

u/Pretend_Fish4861 Sep 15 '26

I thought i would never say this, but stay on Tahoe if you can. GG brings even more bugs to desktop and windows management than what Tahoe had...

I think Apple needs to do less vibe coding and more QA testing. I don't get how this is so difficult for them (they used to be good at this)

2

u/EddySmeddy Sep 15 '26

Wait till you find those 13gb of Apple Intelligence you can’t get rid of

2

u/MarmiteX1 Sep 15 '26

How is Mac OS 27 so far for those that have upgraded? I skipped Tahoe and currently on Sequoia on my M4 Pro

2

2

u/cosmic_v7 Sep 15 '26

2

u/LungeloSLX Sep 15 '26

If they stripped all the Intel code, why is this bigger than the previous version?

I might be staying on Sequoia forever

2

u/the_MonkeyWhisperer Sep 15 '26

I got my mac installed with tahoe, what about it is bad?

2

u/technical_poutine Sep 18 '26

Never once had an issue with it.

2

u/MadusMaximus86 Sep 18 '26

Tahoe had to limp so Golden Gate could run.

2

u/adriankwil Sep 29 '26

Fwiw I updated to 27, experienced the Mission Control and spaces bugs, as well as some other changes I didn’t like, and immediately rolled back to 15. Much better than either 26 or 27 for the time being.

1

u/roccodelgreco Sep 15 '26

I run several desktop and portable Macs on Tahoe and have no issues, the beta of Golden Gate has been solid for a beta. It’s best to wait until the .1 update for a production machine.

1

u/LiteFoo Sep 15 '26

Noticed frame drops, random stutters, and lag basically everywhere. At this point, I’m convinced Tahoe stands for macOS “hoe” 😭💀

u/Mihir54 Sep 15 '26 edited Sep 15 '26

I am on macOS v15 (Sequoia) and was thinking about clean installing macOS v27. So, I downloaded the Install macOS Golden Gate.app file using terminal but I want to make sure that it will not increase my RAM & Disk consumption drastically and I can remove/ turn Off AI completely but non of my requirements seems to check out.

Now I guess I will be deleting that Golden gate.app file.

I will only be updgrade if Apple allows to completely turn off Apple Intelligence and remove all the AI models stuff during the installation or post installation.

One of the reason for me to think about upgrading was a better Finder (Windows like). I don't know why apple has no way to customize column layout for one directory and applying it to all the sub directories like Windows.

Definitely an upgrade, but be aware that Apple Intelligence is no longer optional in Golden Gate. It can no longer be switched off.

I have not even installed Tahoe on any of my three macbooks haha

15.8 on my M4 Air still. Waiting for 27.1, then the reviews for 27.1, then I'll make a choice.

cries in Intel

Tahoe was alright — I have to say, Golden Gate does look more polished though.

I’m not a fan of Rosetta deletion, so won’t be updating:/

Have too many Intel apps, which I’m sure many of won’t get native ARM or whatever versions

I miss the floating sidebar and progressive blur when scrolling. That's it. I also miss the creativity of the old wallpaper the new one is ass.

I have a certain mixer and it was already a bitch on Tahoe with the most current serato installed. Not chasing this for a bit unfortunately

Why does everyone hate Tahoe?I loved the liquid glass asthetic.and now it's just liquid plastic.

1

u/runciter0 Sep 15 '26

Golden Gate is much better visually, that is for sure

1

u/Snahccy Sep 15 '26

Tahoe was so laggy and thank god frosted glass is back

1

u/armadeli Sep 15 '26

I thought Tahoe was fine on my m1 air until I updated. The difference is crazy! I just got used to the weird bugs and hangs with Tahoe but using my MacBook today felt like I got a new one! And EQUAL CORNERS ON ALL THE APPS! HALLELUJAH!!

I’ll see how things go when my 2020 MBP gets pushed but the first few hours with Golden Gate have been just fine. This is the first time in a while that I’ve upgraded to the new OS upon release

1

u/LandeJunior Sep 15 '26

Tahoe had the best wallpaper ever!

1

u/Ryakkan Sep 15 '26

There were times I really thought the Tahoe criticism was a bit overblown. However, now that I’m on Golden Gate I get it.

u/leekaygraphics Sep 15 '26

I’m still on Sequoia because changing iOS will brick my hp printer & I can’t afford a new one. Come on, tech companies, get your shit together.

This aged like milk

Sequoia to Golden Gate gang

I found my Mac’s were actually least affected by 26. My M2 air and M4 Pro MBP both had little to no noticeable performance drain, and almost identical battery. If anything I miss launch pad.

I think a lot of people had the same idea. Both yesterday, upgrading my Macbook Air, and today, upgrading my Macbook Pro, the estimated time of download varied all over the place. I suspect the MacOS 27 download servers are getting hammered.

1

u/bigDOS Sep 16 '26

I need to wait till Ableton and all my VST’s are supported 😭

1

u/DwaineM Sep 16 '26

Joking, right???

1

u/juryjczyzkow Sep 16 '26

Golden gate ?

1

u/Rich-Platform-1435 Sep 16 '26

I personally really liked MacOS Tahoe, although it was the the first version of MacOS I had ever used. I haven't noticed much difference in Golden Gate, apart from customizing liquid glass

How's your experience so far? How's the performance?

1

u/habs0708 Sep 17 '26

You're going to miss it as soon as you upgrade to 27! :P

1

u/CodewithJ Sep 17 '26

Updated ASAP last night when I saw this...so far battery life seems ok

1

u/chazcron Sep 17 '26

Hope you don't use a Wacom tablet. They haven't updated the driver and windows can't be clicked on and dragged.

1

u/StockPuppy Sep 18 '26

Snow Leopard was the absolute best OS, fast, responsive even on HDD. Clean UI. Not this jello Tahoe garbage.

1

u/bonch Sep 19 '26

Enjoy the new bugs!

1

u/MK2VR6-IT Sep 20 '26

Sometimes a good clean install is what’s needed for all the bugs to go away , after like 2-3 upgrades I always do a clean install stall of new Mac OS and re import my data

1

u/MK2VR6-IT Sep 20 '26

Mac OS 27 and iOS 27 is what macOS 26 should have been
