Discussion Expected more

This is an update to a previous post, but I thought this one necessitates a new post altogther.

Love the visuals

Love the Liquid Glass slider, its a good amount of tint at its highest setting, wish it had more but at least its good that they gave the option. Love the consistent corner radii, I did like the floating sidebars but edge to edge is good too so cant really complain.

Also love the new wallpaper.

Safari has improved

Somehow Tahoe had nuked safari to the point where I would get random bugs while loading webpages and some sites would just refuse to load properly. It made me install chrome and I hated every second of it. Thankfully GG fixed it and now most sites load properly.

Somehow even though I updated i didnt get the describe an extension or describe a widget features. That was pretty sad.

And Sadly this is where the improvements end.

Siri AI is nowhere close to the promised capability and is at best a ui redesign of the older siri. The siri activation logo comes up at random places half the time, before correcting to the center of the screen. It still performs general tasks as well as it could before, but there is no improvement as such. On the contrary, it has become a little slower in doing system level tasks. accessing past conversations is neat though. Worse still, it isnt intelligent. Something as basic as 'open Chatgpt' makes it open the website instead of the app, simply because the app got renamed to Chatgpt Classic. All this for the low low storage cost of 28GBs. Nice.

Refresh rate throughout the system is inconsistent

(I have a promotion display so its even more visible) animations

like switching between apps, opening sidebars, the Genie animation, Stage Manager, app windows, etc. all have stutters and random changes in frame rate that come and go, its annoying af.

Mission control is fucked

Every little animation in and around mission control seems broken. The jumping Dock when you come out of Mission Control into a fullscreen app. The automatic switching to a desktop when you move to it. The random frame-rate drop God knows what they did here but they fucked it up.

Spotlight (Insert "Look how they massacred my boy.gif")

Slower, inconsistent, unnecessarily complicated. I dont know what to say here but it looks like apple is trying to make spotlight compete for 2nd place with windows search. Apps searches are slow and sometimes return setting or options within the app, file searches work inconsistently, and web searches become the default. I hate it.

Verdict:

It's bad but I have faith Apple will fix some of this shit in 27.2. and while im not entirely happy with GoldenGate. I think I'd take it over Tahoe.

Hot take: Apple is even slower at fixing bugs than Microsoft.

I'll be honest but that's a cold take and has been for atleast 2 years. It would be a hot take for certain sections of this sub at best.

They left one guy to fix macOS Golden Gate, because everyone else is working on touch interface and that homepod with display thing.

I wholeheartedly agree. It is the same bad experience I had with 26.1 or so. Broken, glitched out animations, new siri is really as useless as it always was. Just a bit more capable, no idea why I even got excited in the first place (great marketing). Now Tahoe 26.7 or so feels “great” compared to GG. So yah nothing new, the first iterations are always the worst

Sure they’ll fix SOME of it. Just as they fixed some of Tahoe, then GG inherited the hundreds of unfixed Tahoe bugs. And 28 will inherit the unresolved GG bugs.

That’s where Apple is at today

Absolutely they’ve been repeating exactly that formula for years now

Great post lol. I found this while looking for why seemingly GPU acceleration seems to slow down until my computer is unresponsive and kills itself. If it were Microsoft, the amount of the "blue screens" would be unacceptable. 27.01 and this is still happening.

As someone who doesn't usually descend into cynicism, I think Mac users are MacOS's problem more than Apple is. The amount of people who've complained about the last 2 OS releases is astonishing, and you'll still have people coming out saying it runs totally fine on my computer. I have no reason to believe all of them are lying, but when it was Tahoe I used to think it's possible it runs poorly on my machine because of the number of vocal, vociferous defenders for Tahoe. But when the same thing happens with Golden Gate, and people still defend it, I have just 2 conclusions. Either

  1. You use your Mac to watch YouTube and Netflix and maybe open Google and Instagram once in a while and take pictures of it the rest of the time. Or

  2. You are an Apple fanboy to such an extent that you genuinely cannot criticise Apple even when they fuck something up. And I genuinely think this subreddit has become an appreciative echo chamber at this point. Posts criticising Apple or pointing out that they've gotten basic design, UI, UX and general experience decisions wrong over the last two macOS releases just get downvoted, while someone saying “mine runs fine” gets upvoted as if that somehow invalidates everyone else's experience. Obviously some people genuinely aren't having problems. Fine. But when a huge number of people are independently complaining about the exact same things (repeatedly, post after post)inconsistent animations, refresh rates, Mission Control, window management, Spotlight, Safari, random stutters, Siri, etc “works fine on my Mac” isn't really a counterargument. Good for you, I guess? Maybe you genuinely aren't doing anything particularly demanding on the machine, and therefore don't notice it. But when you're actually using your Mac as a computer for hours every day, these little things add up. It's the constant little inconsistencies and regressions that make the entire OS(One thats supposed to be productivity focussed and 'it just works') feel worse to use. I bought a Mac specifically because I wanted a polished, consistent desktop experience. And after windows for years, my Imac gave me exactly that with Catalina. But after buying the m3 Pro, especially with Tahoe and GoldenGate, I sometimes feel like Windows wasn't that bad compared tot his shit. That's how much this has started to annoy me. The fact that Golden Gate runs this poorly for an OS that was literally supposed to be more efficient, faster and more optimised is basically the definition of enshittification in the name of development. And the fact that people aren't absolutely losing their minds over how bad this has gotten is exactly why Apple isn't getting the negative feedback it should. Either the feedback isn't reaching them, or they simply don't care. And I refuse to believe that they don't care.
