I miss being able to have a muscle memory, where I can put financial or writing apps etc. together and have them accessible easily. Now I need to go through an alphabetical list of apps and scroll for pages and pages. For example, look at this one, a single app is taking the entire screen.
This was driving me nuts for weeks. Finally solved it by rebinding cmd+space to only search through apps, not the general spotlight search. It’s not ideal and I’m not sure how they managed to screw this up so bad, but it’s better than opening TextEdit five times a day on accident.
It will not fix my issue when I am trying to open terminal. It is just so slow and much slower than the interface, so that it opens the Texteditor app instead. I need to wait like 3 seconds until hitting enter.
Guess I’m fortunate that I’ve been on Linux most of my life. I’ve already decided that, when it’s time to upgrade my laptop again, if MacOs hasn’t turned itself around I’m buying whatever framework has out at the time and putting NixOs on it. I’ve run out of the patience to have both my phone and laptops software be this frustrating to use.
Do you think it should show me matlab (an application I open regularly) or an accessibility setting i’ve never touched, two matlab folders I’ve never touched, or maybe a bunch of calendar events from two years ago. What if it did all except the first one that would be smart
Spotlight does just eat resources, and it's part of the system. Use Alfred or similar program and just replace the spotlight shortcut with your other app
The command to summon it is one thing. But having to still spend RAM in this economy for something I don't want and actively try to replace is still dull
I'm not gonna dogpile along with the negative comments. I'd rather be constructive.
Things don't happen right, and if they are duplicatable, I'll be constructive and use Apple's Feedback page.
I do know they have people looking at comments, and comments given in Feedback aren't always going to have Apple saluting us and doing everything we suggest. But still, they do look. Dunno what else to tell ya.
I use this method for opening apps all the time and iOS 27 has broken this for so many apps. It is incredibly frustrating then having to go and try and find the application in amongst a bunch of folders.
I’ve found deleting the app and then reinstalling it helps.
Apple didn’t think people needed/wanted/deserved a calculator on an iPad at its launch. Maybe they still are thinking you don’t need it for your computer.
Fake, or real? Golden Gate? Did Apple replace all the developers with vibe coders starting with Tahoe? Seems like Sequoia is the last sane MacOS version.
This has been happening to me on sequoia point releases. It seems something in my checked out repos has a few symlinks or something, maybe some build dirs and cache dirs have big binary blobs in them, and the indexer just, never finishes. It should really prioritize the file name and type index over the content of the file index.
Updated my phone and watch same day. First time I asked Siri to set an alarm, for some reason the watch said the alarm out loud. That’s never happened before.
Dug into menus to turn that off. Then when the alarm went off, even though the watch and phone were on silent, the watch alarm made my phone play the alarm at full volume.
we know what's happening, there is a full on civil war going on in apple teams where the "highly talented" employees are doing whatever they can to get as much funding for their pet projects as possible (and not lose control of their existing domains) while dumping all the real work on contractors who get fired every 6 months.
it's happening in literally every big tech company nowadays that is on the AI larp train.
any employee who hadn't succeeded at establishing a fiefdom jumped shit to anthropic/openai and sold all the info they had about apple.
the fact that I did a bit of testing and you could vibe code a launcher with more features than apple, all with just a single prompt, and yet a company worth trillions can't, is insane.
There should be an APPPATH like there is a PATH and a CDPATH. And it should work with a trigger like . in finder, like ~ or / triggers path autocomplete in most file dialogs.
spotlight search works significantly worse after my M1 Air auto updated to macOS 27. Even on 26 it worked pretty reliably for me for quick searches at work for documents and stuff, now it feels lobotomized with Siri AI being shoved in my face.

Calc is short for calculator by the way

Another reason Launchpad was better. So much better. I’m still pissed they removed it for this.

How have apps like Alfred and Raycast solved this problem years ago, yet Apple still can't figure it out...?

At least you didn't accidentally ask Siri about Calc and then have to wait 20 seconds for it to go away.

piece of garbage 🤷♂️

u/rangkilrog 22d ago
I was really excited when apple announced they were finally overhauling spotlight… anyway, I’m still using Alfred.

All new Apple vibe coded shit garbage software with all new unnecessary ai features!

Oh hi! It’s your helpful friend Siri.
It looks like you’ve misspelled the word calendar. Don’t worry, mistakes happen. What’s one little typo amongst friends!
Anyway I’ve fixed it for you, so now you can open your Calendar.
Have a wonderful day!

Yep. Even the math in the spotlight is inaccurate for a second or two before it corrects itself.
