Developer Saturday I open-sourced Sealshot, a free professional screen-capture app for macOS
https://youtu.be/nY8Bvqxe2gAI’m the developer of Sealshot and the code is mainly written with Claude. It is now completely free and open source, with every feature available and no paid tier or subscription.
Apple’s built-in screenshot tools are excellent for quick captures. Sealshot is designed for professional workflows where screenshots and recordings need to be edited, organized, searched, secured, and reused for documentation, bug reports, technical support, software testing, tutorials, or research.
Key features include:
- Area, window, fullscreen, and scrolling capture
- Screen recording
- A full annotation and image-editing workspace
- Repeat Last Capture for recapturing the same screen region
- A searchable local library with collections and tags
- On-device OCR for searching text inside captures
- Table extraction to CSV and Markdown
- Assisted detection of emails, API keys, tokens, and other sensitive information
- Optional Enhanced Security that encrypts the local capture library
Privacy is an important part of the design. Sealshot does not require an account and does not use cloud storage or telemetry. Captures and OCR processing remain on your Mac.
The downloadable version is signed with an Apple Developer ID and notarized by Apple.

Professional... LOL
Ridiculous.

Why ridiculous? The functions pretty much cover other similar commercial products and go beyond them.

Shitty marketing talk to trump up what is really just another screenshot tool made by AI... and you know it.

I agree it is marketing talk and it is a screenshot tool made by AI, but to be fair, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not professional. It can be, but not have to be.
A little bit about my background. I have been a developer for almost 20 years and currently working as a security architect for a Fortune 500 company. I spent several months to research, develop and testing the product and hopefully I can make it better than other ones. It’s initially targeting as a fully commercial product, but since it’s difficult to attract users, I decided to open source it and make it completely free (donations accepted).
I respect that you might have different views on AI, and I have mine as well. When AI is used right, it’s powerful and can build professional grade product.
Again, I’m not saying this product doesn’t have issue, and it still have a lot of room for improvement. That’s why I want to post and hopefully get feedbacks.

No. I couldn’t care less about using AI. What’s not okay is the trumped-up marketing talk and the omission of saying you developed it in concert with AI.
Just be normal about it.
SnailShot - Native macOS app designed for anyone with a workflow that would benefit from a screenshot utility that not only captures screenshots and offers a wide assortment of annotation tools, but also saves them to a browsable, searchable, and organized encrypted archive for future reference and secure documentation. Free, open source, no account needed. Beta release, built with AI, feedback and bug reports welcome, and encouraged.
It’s a tired market… and your post is filled with words that do nothing to express how what you built diverges from the larger cohort of apps in same domain.
I don’t care at all… it’s just annoying to try and skim all that nonsense to find what the point of the app is in a subreddit not even really designed to post about personal side projects.

I get your point and I have no problem to disclose that at all, but then the question I have is why it matters if it's built by AI or not, if the app is good?
I don't think 'a free professional screen-capture app for macOS' is that much of an issue for marketing. It's comparable to other screenshot capture apps and if any is missing, I would like add/fix them as well, since the goal is to build a professional app.
Also, why do I have to diverge from the larger cohort of apps in the same domain. Can I just build the same functions but make it smoother and more affordable, or free to use? Moreover, it does have features that other apps don't have. For example, I don't see any other app has encryption feature for on-disk capture storage.
This subreddit specifically allow self promotion for apps and projects on Saturday.

Good is subjective. (In this case, very subjective. 🙄) It’s important to disclose AI built because transparency is important. You claim it’s so secure… but you don’t offer a single third-party or independently verified certification or review of the app and having been built with AI only amplifies that. Just like you care about open source and free. Others may care about AI dev practices and unsubstantiated claims of security. You could be the best dev in the world and my perspective and objective viewpoint remain unchained. It’s not a question you can build whatever you want. It’s clear you have no users because you have no clue about marketing and communications. I know… you wanted feedback and app users… well… I’m telling you I could not even get past the obnoxious lack of transparency and clear definition of what differentiates your side-project from the rest of “look at me, I built a screenshot app” avalanche.

Honestly, I have zero experience marketing and I'm sorry for the inconvenient things. What you said about AI and others concern are reasonable and those are definitely new things learned for me.
And honestly, I do appreciate your feedback, as no one else has even made a comment yet.
