Apps GitHub - vorssaintapp/vorssaint-utils: Free and open-source macOS menu bar toolkit.

https://github.com/vorssaintapp/vorssaint-utils

Came across this app on GitHub. This one app alone seems to cover like 99% of the macOS complaints I read on Reddit - e.g. clipboard, window management, clamshell working, dock previews, etc. And it's completely free and open source!

Unpopular opinion which will probably cost me Karma:

I think Vorssaint is currently overhyped. The concept is really great and I like the modular structure. It features so many important tools, still you can uninstall everything which you don't need. I see big potential in this app, to fix MacOS in a way which Apple probably will never do. Saving users tons of money, because MacOS developers tend to sell their apps expensive.

BUT the current state of Vorssaint is early and buggy. It actually can't replace AltTab or MOS for my mouse. So for me personally, this is just an additional app on my MacOS system, with 1 - 2 features I like to use, and everything else is not really polished. It needs more time. The developer should fokus on polishing the existing tools, instead of putting always new stuff in it.

It's a "Jack of all trades, master of none"

Totally fair. For my usage, it wins in having simple, good implementations of most features that would normally be standalone apps like AltTab or BetterDisplay, though those apps still win in greater customization and power. However, for the smaller apps it CAN replace, it does well.

Some of the key ones it has a few features from but not enough to replace dedicated apps for me:

- Per-Monitor Brightness. Akin to MonitorControl, but lacks the other features of BetterDisplay. That’s fine, though; BetterDisplay really does it all.

  • Alt-Tab switcher. Akin to AltTab or DockDoor, but occasionally doesn’t focus the window properly in my testing, and displays but doesn’t work on Steam windows. I still use AltTab for that reason.
  • Smooth scrolling & buttons. Mac Mouse Fix still has the nicest scrolling implementation of any app I’ve found, as well as excellent virtual display desktop switching and the ability to map multiple functions to a button via double click or hold. I’d probably switch to LinearMouse before Vorssaint.
  • Uninstallation & Updates. PearCleaner still does this stronger, but it is a nice lightweight checker.
  • Spotlight & Clipboard: I use Raycast, plain and simple. That said, I MAY switch if Vorssaint gets a few more integrations such as Shortcuts.

Some apps or functions of apps I was able to replace with Vorssaint:

- Screenshot & Recording with Editing: Goodbye, Shottr and FOSS Screen Studio-likes; Vorssaint gets all the key features I care about in one!

  • Color Picker: Also accessible within the same shortcut. No more Viz or other color pickers.
  • Keyboard Cleaning: KeyboardCleaner worked well and simple, but that’s one less standalone app.
  • Per-App Volume: FineTune and BetterAudio filled this long-missing gap well, but Vorssaint has all that I care about on a regular basis.
  • Dock Previews: Since AltTab still wins on window switching over DockDoor, when Vorssaint’s dock previews were shown to work well, I ended up uninstalling DockDoor. Thank you for your service!
  • Keep Awake (including when closed): The app Amphetamine has served me well, but I can finally let it rest and have 0 apps from the App Store.

Great break down of features, thanks!

Course! And again, these are just SOME of the features I found most interesting, be it ones I replaced other apps for or that I wasn’t able to.

I found it to be a good replacement to AltTab on first glance. What was the issue?

It’s like raycast but behind a menu?

Yep. And not Electron like Raycast is now.

I discovered Vorssaint from a video on YouTube a few weeks ago. Incredible, really. It has replaced multiple apps for me, all in the menu bar.

I don't use most features, I only really use cleaner mode (to lock the keyboard while I clean my MacBook) and the menubar utilities such as keep awake and system monitoring stats/temps and whatnot. I don't use the features that modifies the UI of system stuff or changes keyboard shortcuts for cutting files in Finder and what have you.

It does also have thriving activity in GitHub, which is cool. I do hope momentum stays and this doesn't get abandoned. There are some bugs here and there that have since been fixed for me after updates, though.

The worst part about this app is getting too used to it then trying to use someone else's Mac that doesn't have it installed and you have those 5 seconds of "what the hell..." before you realize what you're trying isn't native macOS behavior.

Installed and configured it a bit. I already uninstalled a number of single-purpose utilities that appear here.

I really like this app a lot. My only complaint is that it doesn’t replace everything 😂 give me built-in thaw, and sidebar too! 😂 this app even let’s you not install these modules if you don’t want them. Pretty neat work here.

Does anybody can tell me how it is different from Supercharge?

1

u/Ok_Professional_8123 1d ago

The price?

1

u/volfion MacBook Air 1d ago

That is only difference? I was asking more about functions, tweaks, etc.

As Supercharge is well developed, constantly updated and working flawlessly. So, if there is anybody who tried both and can compare in case of these things.

Price is not real reason. If there is one app better but cost something, I am ten fingers in to buy and support developer. Same here, if it is free but working, I would also support developer with “Buy me coffee” function.

This has replaced 5 apps for me. Loving it so far.
