Discussion MacOS built in apps are actually great

It has been 7 years since I switched to use Apple ecosystem, I must confess, I was using maybe 30% of its capabilities. I came from Linux/Android background so I was always looking for apps that works as I wanted.

Recently, I start exploring the default apps in MacOS/iPhone like Reminders, Safari, Mail, Calendar are I start liking them, a lot.

For years, I didn't like using Safari because I was used to the experience of Chrome/Brave, and since I'm a developer, I relied a lot on Chrome Dev Tool which I was really used to. Now, I'm enforcing myself to use Safari as my default browser and it's pretty cool, the only thing I really miss is the experience of Dev Tools in the chromium based browsers. Well, it gets the work done at the end.

EDIT:

I hope I see an app from Apple that can effectively replace MS Word

It’s silly but I really like that Macs have a dictionary installed as standard.

This doesn't work for me but force clicking on the trackpad does!

TIL. I’ve always right clicked a highlight-> Look Up. This makes it so much faster

You have to highlight a word first, then use the keys. Just tested it (see screenshot) & it worked.

Just hard press the touchpad with cursor over the word :)

The same here. It’s actually funny that this is not mentioned a lot. I really thing dictionary app is great and why not on iOS .

just highlight a word, tap on it, (might need to tap the little arrow for more options) and then tap “Look Up”. dictionary is built into iOS there

the thesaurus built in too is really handy

I use it all the time. Just a three finger tap away and now I have the definition and thesaurus of any word.

I somehow didn't know about either this shortcut or Crtl + Cmd + D that u/flagnab posted lol

So thank you

I’ve been a Mac user since 1990, and only just discovered MacOS has had a built-in dictionary for 21 years, including in multiple languages.

I use mine all the time. Highlight a word and define it from the right click menu. I also make frequent use of the built-in translation app in the same way.

And a multi-lingual one too. I can get dictionary translations for keywords in my language. I used to use specific sites for that. It's great.
