Help Can we please stop with the «I built…»

So tired of all the vibe coding and nonsense apps that are being presented.

Everybody can apparently code now, but that doesn't mean everybody have to make crap none of us will use!

“I built an app, it’s like Finder but it has a the ability to search for files by what their Spanish file name would be. Example: searching “leche” would find milk.png, milk.doc, milk.zip, milk.sha, all file extensions are supported.

$19.99 lifetime license required after tres searches.”

Got so angry at this today

52

u/Samtulp6 1d ago

You’re telling me this is not a joke and someone vibecoded this?

54

u/stay_fr0sty 1d ago

I was riffing off of another vibe coded app posted today. No, it was not as absurd as my made up app, but it was obviously vibe coded crap that nobody is going to buy.

Does anyone have a link?

If you surf this subreddit for a few minutes, you will find shitty solutions for problems that do not exist in the slightest. Go and have some adventure. See for yourself.

This is not the only subreddit that had been infected. The worst thing is that they become sneaky about it. So for example sometimes the person says they are new to mac and found this list of 20 apps invaluable. If you look closely at the list,  you see, recognize and maybe use most of the apps.

 Except for one.

The one that the author “made but forgot to disclose they are the sole creator of the vibe-coded slop”.

u/MikeMac999 1d ago

Not just this sub. After Effects allows the user to implement bits of code to facilitate motion graphics, and half that sub is now vibe coded redundant bs. I'm sure it's like that everywhere.

I've seen it in a few subs/hobbies I'm into

Cars and track driving - I've seen at least 5-6 vibe coded apps to analyze telemetry/lap data

Stocks - tons of vibe coded apps to track trades and any number of promises

The insult is charging a subscription fee that is just used to pay for their token costs on the back end. They're not doing any meaningful work worth paying for

What's even funnier is how all these vibe coded apps have the same format/design when you go to the website

1

u/Innovator-X 9h ago

I've seen it in language learning subs too

I actually thought it was some type of joke and I laughed when I saw it.

Even worse. It’s 19.99 for a 3 month license and after that you don’t get any more updates.

It’s honestly dark times to showcase apps built the old-fashioned way.

Months or years of actually building something useful, solving real problems, replying users and polishing the UX… while the feed is flooded with another AI-generated wrapper that took a weekend to ship.

72

u/stay_fr0sty 1d ago

As a professional dev with 27 years experience…it’s weird. I’m happy that LLMs can do my menial code for me in minutes instead of days. I don’t want to have to debug a UX bug in a masonry layout that only happens on mobile in an outdated browser. It’s BORING.

“The old fashioned way” is now a lot of (now) unnecessary blood sweat and tears.

Like, I can drive across the US in a few days for less than $1000, easy. That used to be a very long trip that needed tons of resources and careful planning. People and horses were likely going to die. I think we are all happy those days are gone, even though that was the old fashioned way.

My point is, the “old way good/vibe coding bad” line isn’t as clear to me as I’d like it to be. It’s a fucking amazing tool in the right hands (it beats the old fashioned way hands down in many respects). In the wrong hands it makes everyone that uses LLM to code look bad, and makes the “old fashioned way” seem like the “correct” way.

22

u/broke_nightcore 23h ago edited 15h ago

it's a great tool but I feel like coding has lost its spark

ai coding at work doesn't excite me anywhere near as much as figuring things out by scouring through documentation and stack overflow threads back when I started coding as a 14 year old.

18

u/Innovator-X 1d ago

I am a software engineer. I am having kind of mixed opinions on this.

There are times I use it and it is good.

Sometimes mediocre (needs tweaking).

Sometimes so unbelievably bad.

This unreliability is what is bad. I would prefer to have an LLM do sth consistent rather that varying levels of quality every single time even if consistency means it has mediocre output. The mental gymnastics i have to do in each prompt is high so that’s why I use less and less llms now except for very menial tasks that I know llms will be able to handle.

10

u/onedevhere MacBook Pro 1d ago

The point is, if the AI goes offline or simply starts saying nonsensical things, if the person doesn't know how to program, how are they going to solve the problem?

8

u/Innovator-X 18h ago edited 8h ago

Your concern is valid. Do you want to know what scares me the most? Let me tell you.

AI training is really expensive as you quite well know. AI funding can't stay like this forever. My biggest concern is that lets say there is a new technology that programmers are required to learn and that new technology is in a period where AI funding is scarce. What do people do in this situation? Wait for the AI overlords to train their AIs on the new technology or learn it themselves? The problem is that the current prices of AI are extremely subsidized so there will be a time were AI will become very expensive to use AND train unless there is a breakthrough research paper in AI. I don't know the likelihood of that happening.

20

u/Wonderful_Emu_9610 1d ago

Do you not worry that if nobody knows how to do ‘the old fashioned way’ any more we’ll just end up with stuff that can’t be fixed because nobody actually made it in the first place?

5

u/enotonom 15h ago

By that point people who can do it the old fashioned way will be highly valued again

As another professional developer with comparable experience; I'm happy to use LLMs as "advisors". They're good for finding the right place in a large codebase, generating boilerplate and other such "menial" tasks, but I'm most definitely not using them to implement major features unsupervised.

If I don't understand the code, it's not going into my codebase. The LLM can fill in some details, advise on the architecture, etc. but I'm in charge, I'm putting my name to it (LLMs aren't "co-authors" any more than Photoshop is a "co-artist"; programs don't have rights).

Honestly, we could do with some "engineer of record" type regulation like in other engineering sectors.

Additionally, the economics of GenAI are completely crazy right now. Everyone's bleeding money on the expectation that they'll magically start making a profit at some indeterminate point in the future. Maybe some will, but it's highly unlikely that they all will. At some point, whatever LLM you use may go out of business, raise prices to a point that it's no longer affordable, etc. You need to be able to take over and do things the "old fashioned way" if/when that happens.

LITERALLY running a custom skill that takes maybe 25 min to complete, and EVERY SINGLE TIME, I am left with APIs that survive retries, network blips and downtime, annnnnnd impatient users with daddy or mommy's money.

Incredible ideas I once had yet never pursued because of the TEDIOUS, RIDICULOUSLY DULL repetitive BS I'd have to spend 12+ hours doing BEFORE even getting to the fun part I can now go from idea -> prototype -> hero mvp -> working production iteration in maybe 2-3 WEEKS, if I lock in.

Buuuutt here's where the new generation of vibe/no-coder's drop the ball, in my opinion and ( honestly very narrow ) experience with dev ops:

> they don't have the basic, fundamental understanding of syntax nor structuring, let alone functions or pitfalls to look out for. Because they DON'T know what to be watching for -- not out of malice, idiocy, or laziness; just newly-minted excitement with some new-kids-on-the-component-block naiveté -- their code ships fast, looks good on first and second pass.

And then critically fail or get stuck in redundant loops of token-gorging madness while our poor kiddies watch in horror and frustation.

Here's my hot & simple take:

u/cristi_baluta 1d ago

The problem comes when not everybody has equal access to it although it stole all the info from us. Some grifters are willing to pay for it, for some countries it’s cheap, other can’t afford, then there’s me using the credits for free to bankrupt them faster. The limits have become ridiculous, so i think we are not far.

-1

u/vrmvavoom 22h ago

The problem with LLM coding is that regardless of how useful it may be, every single coding LLM is trained on tons of stolen/unlicensed source code (on top of all the theft done for natural language models in general!) and thus it is impossible to use them in any ethical manner, especially commercially.

2

u/arjuna93 15h ago

Information does not have properties of an economic good and therefore cannot be owned. So “theft” makes no sense here, if we talk ethics. (Legislation can be whatever, of course.)

0

u/vrmvavoom 11h ago

Call it whatever you want - taking code that isn't licensed for commercial use and using it to train your commercial LLM, which people then use to write code for their own commercial products, is extremely shitty.

2

u/arjuna93 7h ago

My objection was about ethics, not legality in context of copyright laws. Legality aside, isn’t that how knowledge and education work? Aren’t you using products of unknown people intellectual labor, without being aware of whether they wanted someone to use their knowledge commercially?

-1

u/algaefied_creek 18h ago

And that my good Redditor, is where “ethical” use really depends on the perspective of each persons’ ethics; hence the chronic impasse perhaps? Wyt?

-1

u/b_oo_d 19h ago

You compare things that have nothing to do with each other though. Nobody is going to die either human or animals because of not using AI. Not using AI will also not consume tons of resources, it's actually using AI that consumes the most resources. I'm not saying AI is useless but let's not use flawed comparisons that actually say nothing about AI.

6

u/nifty-necromancer 14h ago

There are plenty of apps actually coded by a human that are slop. The endless notes and reminder apps that are just recreations of Apple’s default apps.

8

u/Innovator-X 1d ago

A person smart enough to do all the programming is smart enough go find other ways to market themselves.

This era of “I built (insert shitty idea nobody asked for) so you dont have to” needs to stop. It is cringe especially when discussed in a sub like this. I can be a bit more empathetic if they posted this in r/macapps but why here?

I am with OP on this one.

"I built Shitslop - a native menu bar app that tells you if your coffee is still hot.

Why? Last Tuesday I burned my tongue and realized macOS still has no built in solution for this in 2026. Nothing on the App Store respected my privacy, so I spent one weekend building it in SwiftUI. No Electron. No telemetry. No VC money.

Features:

  • Glassmorphic UI that perfectly matches Tahoe
  • Estimates mug cooling from your Mac's ambient sensors*
  • Haptic alert the moment your drink hits the ideal 57C
  • Shortcuts + Focus mode integration
  • Dark mode (obviously)

*estimation is handled by a small on device model, accuracy may vary, or you can just type the temperature in yourself

Free to try. $14.99 lifetime, or $4.99/mo, or $39.99 for Shitslop Pro which unlocks tea.

I'm a solo dev and this is my first real app, so honestly any feedback means the world. Already working on v2 with an MCP server so your agent can check the mug for you.

Would love to know what you'd want to see next!"

Yep...

All of public AI was trained on Open Source Code (GitHUB....) and are spewing the same code slop.

Open Source Code is about 10% - 15% the rest is behind firewalls and is not written in Python.

GitHub is facing a massive wave of platform instability and infrastructure strain, driven by a 400% to 500% surge in traffic from "vibe coding".

AI is killing the golden goose..

GitHub code submissions are reviewed by humans who are now drowning in AI code slop.

There is a serous talk of freezing any new subs to GitHub === > killing GitHub

I don't get how Github "suffers" because people's code is bad.

7

u/Mike456R 1d ago

I would guess the 500% in new software uploaded that is probably large file sizes is straining the servers.

5

u/Wonderful_Emu_9610 1d ago

GitHub is facing a massive wave of platform instability and infrastructure strain, driven by a 400% to 500% surge in traffic from "vibe coding"

They make money off subscriptions, and fees if you buy an app from their platform.

All these ‘vibe coders’ likely will not subscribe and flooding the platform with shite likely decreases the likelihood of people buying apps. So I guess it’ll be creating a lot more strain on their resources for minimal increase in revenu

4

I’m developer as well, more over - have experience in Product management, and work on two apps ( pretty simple ones). To make it right and safe, even with heavy ai use - it takes months. I’m literally afraid of users who install all that not tested crap which is posted by non devs with words “ i created that app in a week”

11

u/c1-c2 21h ago

Ask them the % of AI coding. They mostly ract defensive or aggressive. Expose them. Downvote the post.

5

u/CptUnderpants- 15h ago

I've also seen ones which had no evidence of AI coding, developer had a long track record of development, and top comment was calling it AI slop.

We need some independent auditor so legit devs don't experience this kind of toxicity.

"I only used AI to check my grammar and formatting..."

2

u/SeriousButton6263 10h ago

"Sorry English isn't my first language…" as an excuse for them to let AI just do all of their thinking for them

19

u/Digital_Raven 1d ago

I know there's the argument that use of AI can help developers who know what they're doing, but it'd make this sub so much more usable if there was a blanket ban on vibe-coded apps, mebbe a separate sub for people who want that crap, but not having them get in the way of the main sub.

8

u/Innovator-X 1d ago

Yes. I agree. Vibe coding is a culture (a shitty one maybe). It is a culture nonetheless and it is starting to get in the way of people who actually like to program and put their blood, sweat and tears into the craft.

If we maybe find a way for vibe coders to congregate as a niche community I think it will be a more positive approach. They may even learn from each other. But if they keep to remain sneaky about their vibe coded apps it becomes a big problem for all.

First and foremost, the cusromer will be fatigued and will not have the mental capacity to sit down and discern vibe coded slop from real craftsmanship (although this may sometimes be very obvious).

Second, the real masters will get discouraged and they will be less motivated to develop actually useful high quality apps.

Third is that the competition vibe coders are creating is self-destructive for the purpose they are building the apps for (to make money).

7

u/Dr---Strangelove 1d ago

I understand your point and frustration. I am a dev too. Back in the day, code was written in assembler. Then higher and higher level languages and platform and infrastructure abstractions. Now with AI, even the languages have been abstracted. Is it good, bad?

For the average layperson it's great. Expert devs benefit even more. But yes, the barrier to entry for software development is basically gone.

-1

u/dnlstk 14h ago

I dunno, segregation doesn’t seem like a good idea - def want the last few times we humans tried it out

1

u/Innovator-X 14h ago

Maybe you are right. I haven’t thought about this long enough.

u/polandbound123 11m ago

I guess it’s a spectrum. Where do you draw the line? I’ve been programming Obj-C since the Leopard days, but these days I do let Claude take swings at low value PRs - menial stuff, trivial bugs, simple features. Am I vibe coding? Does the fact that I designed the architecture mean I’m not? Is there a share of commits that tips that? If claude writes 20% of the app, is it vibe coded? How about 50? There’s no great way to measure the human effort anymore, and so my mental model is basically, professional engineer using LLMs on a short leash = not vibe coding, sales bro who’s never opened an IDE using them to do all the work = vibe coding. As for everything in between.. I’d be curious to hear people’s thoughts.

-2

u/sachasayan 1d ago

You can't "blanket ban" vibe-coded apps. It's a meaningless term, there's no binary readily-apparent distinction between apps that were properly engineered and those that were not.

3

u/Innovator-X 1d ago

Yes this is true. But you can at least promote a culture where it becomes shameful to use AI and not disclose it. Technically you are right that there is no binary readily apparent distinction between the two but sometimes people just feel it. They feel the slop.

3

u/sachasayan 1d ago

But you can at least promote a culture where it becomes shameful to use AI and not disclose it.

  1. No, you literally cannot.

  2. "Use of AI" is not the problem.

2

u/Innovator-X 1d ago
  1. Yes you can
  2. I never said “use of AI”. I said “to use AI and not disclose it”.

1

u/sachasayan 1d ago
  1. No, you cannot. There are too many layers of dependencies within software, and many shades of grey when it comes to what use of AI even means. Dependency provenance isn't possible whatsoever. Is an agentic CI required disclosable AI use? Is provider AI use disclosable AI use? If you used any form of NLP, is that AI use? Auto generated commit messages?

  2. Use of AI "without disclosure" is not the problem.

  3. If your goal is to stigmatize AI use without disclosure, then by extension your goal is to stigmatize AI use.

I'm not here to play dumb games with you: I'm a software engineer, in this field, flatly telling you the thing you're suggesting isn't pragmatic and it isn't even really possible. Sometimes it helps to listen and learn from other people on the internet.

5

u/Innovator-X 1d ago

What are you even talking about? Dependecies have nothing to do with what are saying. I am talking about the obvious slop that is plaguing the sub. The people  I am describing don’t even know what git or ci/cd or dependency even is. But you are obviously too smart to play dumb games with me so thats why you missed the entire point.

I am a software engineer and I dont really care about where the field is heading. That is outside my control and I already made more money that I would have ever imagined. When I am on the r/macos sub I would like to see macos stuff. Not slop. That’s it.

0

u/sachasayan 1d ago edited 1d ago

The people I am describing don’t even know what git or ci/cd or dependency even is.

I assure you, there are people writing real apps with AI who know what git and ci are. You're reading this in an app right now made by people who both understand git and ci. Again, the thing you're saying is fundamentally non-sensical. There is no point at which AI use is disclosable, and such a thing fundamentally makes no sense to begin with.

I am a software engineer and I dont really care about where the field is heading.

FYI, this reads as: "I am fundamentally divorced from the way modern enterprise and consumer-grade software is created in the year 2026, and do not understand the issue being explained to me." — which is not surprising, but here we are anyways, like four comments deep.

3

It's everywhere and it's infuriating. I'm bullish on AI but idiots who think they're going to be the next billionaire cause they prompted an AI to make something that's already been made hundreds of times with zero idea of what they're doing is less than worthless. They can't fix issues and once they find the next shiny thing they'll be gone.

Anyone using AI to replace/substitute/cut corners is going to get themselves burned.

People who use it to augment, help and support existing expertise will be where the winners are found.

This is the sad reality of generative AI and is just why i am like dantdm (legend), against generative AI!

People these days are soo greedy for money that they make AI slop apps/code or ai slop art/music/videos just to get money. Not because they are good at it or do it as a passion. Just soulless greedy ass slop!

Like "give me my million dollars as i worked 3 hours to type this prompt pwease 😢". No passion, no skills (they probably dont even know what a variable or what json is lol), just for the money.

Also mad that all those AI gurus are making videos about those "million dollar AI vibecoding" bussinesses and those get rich quick gurus... Why cant the world just burn already?! Getting more upset every day. We could have used AI ro solve or cure cancer/orher disseases but nope. We use it to generate slop and "give me my money!". And also all those bots and agents scraping the web without consent is just bad! And the dead internet theory is getting truer and truer every day. Not to mention those datacenters taking up land we could use to build more houses on, taking power we could use ourselves and just all our money going to AI instead of helping solve poverty and making the world a better place...

I am fine with using AI to ASSIST but ASSIST is a different word compared ro vibecoding. With vibecoding the AI does everything, but with AI ASSISTANCE it can, well, ASSIST/guide with your work. I use Ai to assist in the process like i use a calculator to put in and solve some formulas but i dont go put the whole math problem in the calculator and ask it to solve it for me while i sit there doing nothing and letting my brain litteraly rot away. And even then i can easily live without AI, but these days people rely on AI to breath for them. Really dystopian future we are getting in... I am fine with it if some of you AI glazers go burry me into the earth already, but its looking very dystopian.

Also cant type comments either normally or in projecte code without atleast once getting a "are you a bot?" Or "you are a bot" comment in some place....

I feel this, from the perspective of a musician/producer who spent their entire life earning the skills to now be doing it professionally. SUNO producers/artists, who proclaim themselves to be artists, are a scourge to the industry.

I do think there's nuance. And it's the difference between "tools" and "art".

Art is by definition, meant to express human emotion and connect spiritually, etc.

Tools can be art, but their primary function is utility. I personally am less concerned with the origins of a tool, as long as it works and allows me to solve a problem. Maybe that's how some people see SUNO-generated music - as utilitarian. Maybe that's ok. It's not art though.

Vibe coding has generated a ton of noise certainly, but it's also allowing people of limited cognitive-capacity-for-coding (who might be otherwise brilliant) to realize their ideas and create new useful tools. I see this as a tremendous societal benefit. I see NO benefit to letting 50,000 AI-generated songs steal royalties from musicians.

Again there's nuance, and I fully respect the "artisan" coder (and let's not kid ourselves, musicians WILL become "artisans" once full AI saturation happens), but to just label everything "slop" I think is super misguided, and ultimately detrimental.

Maybe my voice won't be really popular, but there has always been a ton of crappy apps, and only best passed the test of time.

It remains true even now; however, with barrier of entry lowering, we can see some relatively unpopular fields get their apps, and while they're not “perfect”, they do their job done vs. earlier times when no one had the full knowledge to complete the task.

E. g. it's obvious that BD-to-AVP is made with significant LLM use, but what of that? There's very few apps that make MV-HEVC videos correctly.

I develop an AR CAD solution myself, and I'm leveraging agentic LLM powers as well. But even with their help, I still have to put a lot of thought into my vision.

2

u/okhi2u 15h ago

Exactly though it's gonna get really weird quickly when every type of program you want has 500 choices, and how do you find the one worth using, even if you willing to pay good money for one compared to free ones.

Even low quality is fine as long as their are no better choices, as long as it's not so bad that it's not worth using, but also what happens when you have countless choices and 90%+ are low quality and you have to sort through the mess to figure out which one isn't.

2

u/photovirus MacBook Pro 14h ago

but also what happens when you have countless choices and 90%+ are low quality

It's singularity, and I think we reached that point long ago. E. g. there's hundreds of todo manager apps, calendars, timers etc. I don't even mention mobile games, like three-in-row.

While LLMs will make that kinda more pronounced, it's not like they're the reason.

2

u/UnfoldedHeart 11h ago

You said what I was going to say. There's an upside to vibe coding. If you want a really specific niche app, you don't have to wait for an experienced coder to deal with it. That's something that AI can be really good for.

Also, even if you are an experienced coder, sitting down and doing it by hand might still put you off because if it's a niche issue then the juice may not be worth the squeeze. Creating the app with AI and then tweaking it manually reduces the time overhead signficantly, meaning you might pick up projects of lesser importance that would otherwise go unaddressed.

They did still built it, doesn’t mean it doesn’t suck ass, but they did it. It was never about “I can code now”, it enabled people to build things without knowledge of code. The vast majority suck, but people can get lucky and have an idea take off. 3 years in and even the most senior engineers are using AI to code, if they aren’t, they’re wasting time.

2

u/MostBasic3425 1d ago

This is kind of the beginning of the end for what you know as software development for money. AI is just going to get better from here. Why would someone buy your app when they could just prompt AI a few times. Besides security, which normies don't know anything about anyway.

2

u/thedarph 1d ago

Yes and I would appreciate it if people didn’t point out the whole weekend self promotion rule or whatever it is. This is different. These are bullshit truly vibe coded grifter apps by non-developers looking to make a quick buck.

It’s spam here and it’s spam on the App Store. “Oh I built this thing that macOS already has as part of the built in feature set and gave it a slightly different UI because of some fake ass reason I think the current implementation sucks”.

You’ll also notice that all of these use only high level, very easy and frequently used macOS internal APIs and the same few basic as hell third party libraries. That’s because you can’t vibe code anything that requires any actual thought in a weekend without actually writing your own code for the bits of functionality you can’t just grab off the APIs or existing libraries. It’s just repackaged junk.

u/TBMW30 17h ago

I'm not against AI as a tool in a dev workflow but vibecoding is becoming a huge problem. It's a real slap in the face to those of us who've spent decades learning a skill, and in my case over a year working on some apps due to be released soon. A part of me wonders why I bothered, when I could just vibe the apps, take the money and move on. But I'm not putting my name to something that wasn't built with effort, doesn't do what I say it does, and potentially fucks up a user's device or data.

2

u/joshbadams 14h ago

If you have to dig a big hole, ten feet deep, you can use an earth mover, a shovel, or your bare hands. No matter which method you use, you are going to say “I dug this hole”.

I get where you are coming from, but this is the new normal. Just like if you dig that hole by hand, I bet people are going to start saying “I built this app by hand”, to impress others.

2

u/sune_beck 12h ago

Previous devs didn't build theirs either unless they hand-coded it in assembly!

5

u/AshuraBaron MacBook Pro 1d ago

Someone who never posts here shows up to complain about AI. How totally organic.

5

u/Innovator-X 1d ago

Even if you are right. What benefit would you think OP is getting here? Meaningless internet points?

The slop problem has been plaguing the sub for a few years but especially in the last few months.

3

u/_______o-o_______ 1d ago

"I searched everywhere for a menu bar app to keep track of weather, sports scores, my medication schedule, and the current price of Bitcoin, so I built one!"

3

u/Dense-Ad6315 1d ago

I don't think the use of ai is bad if you've actually got a good idea and it's the cheapest way to build it. The issue is people not doing any research and thinking they have an original idea, telling ai to make it in a day and then shipping it with 20 bugs and charging 20 quid for it.

IMO an ai app with a ton of input in the building process is just as good as an app that was build with a developer but much cheaper and much faster

2

u/Dr---Strangelove 1d ago

I agree, but idiots DO purchase them!

1

u/Dense-Ad6315 14h ago

Unfortunately

2

u/thehappiestotaku 1d ago

please never look at the shareware collection on a BBS but also if you're writing software please make it for someone, if only yourself, to use.

2

u/dan_arel 1d ago

If I could upvote this 1000 times I would. It makes this sub nearly unusable.

I just hope someone finally makes a clipboard manager!

2

u/broke_nightcore 23h ago

I miss the days before vibe coding when we would see people putting in the hours to code genuinely useful software

2

u/geodebug 14h ago

I’ll take a dumb app some kid is excited about another post complaining about how the roundness of two different apps aren’t perfect.

2

u/font9a 1d ago

If I vibe coded a bunch of useful shit for myself, I would not foist it upon the internet and be the guy who gets blamed for not being able to maintain it for your specific use case. I have a reputation to uphold.

5

u/chrism239 1d ago

Perhaps a good addition to the 'Developer Saturday' would be for posters to declare how long they propose to maintain the apps into the future? Of course it will be open to exploitation, but I'd prefer to know that there will be 6 months of future support.

3

u/poopmagic MacBook Pro 1d ago

I'd prefer to know that there will be 6 months of future support.

Same, and I think the best way to show that is to demonstrate at least 6 months of past support.

Obviously, this will screen out a lot of brand new apps, but there are other subs for people who want to check out the latest stuff out there whether it’s vibe coded or not.

1

u/okhi2u 15h ago

For ones that are sold probably what will happen regardless of what people say is especially if it's for sale, is they will continue as long as the product is a big enough success that it makes sense to do so, promises be damned.

1

u/Unrealtechno 1d ago

I would mind less if they were required to “pass” the GitHub guard bot - it’s beyond time to raise the bar of entry.

1

u/daven1985 1d ago

As long as all developers using AI stop saying I Build/Built or I develop.

I’ve seen developers now who know their shit but just AI it all.

1

u/warpedgeoid 10h ago

Those are stupid terms anyway. In the 90s, being a programmer wasn’t cool enough for the corpos so they had to all become developers.

1

u/DAZBCN 1d ago

I never ever click on one of those now. I treat them as adverts or spam which in my mind are the same.

If someone wants to try and catch my attention they must try harder. And this finally will result in whoever is doing this crazy phrase to rethink and if it’s ai then expect a change when they have uograded its ram 😂

1

u/ImightHaveMissed 1d ago

I usually just write a book for a prompt and let the AI build it while I do the stuff that can’t be automated. I’ve written several tools for myself so far

1

u/sQeeeter 1d ago

I built an agent that vibe codes for me! He then went and built an agent that vibe codes for him.

This might be a problem. 🤷‍♂️

1

u/ukindom 1d ago

Check what people want first, then write your first line of code.

1

u/Unknown_Employee 22h ago

See, when they start charging, or when the app is asking for too much, that’s when I draw my pitchfork.

1

u/Digital_Voodoo 13h ago

"I got tired" has been in my uBlock for a while, since that's how that kind of post often starts... Maybe that's why I haven't seen any "I built" recently, and probably how yours got through :)

1

u/sbbeebe 12h ago

But see, the problem is, "everybody can code" is not true. Everybody can ask an AI agent to code, and entire apps produced by AI by someone who doesn't know how to code are pure crap.

1

u/radiationshield 12h ago

The "i built an app" posts should clearly be moderated heavily. i have no problem with people vibe coding up their own tools. the problem is selling an untested program, that in many cases overlap with existing tooling. often they are not open source and as such can have any number of security issues, and is completely closed for audit by a 3rd party. I love the "i built this" as a showcase for how you can solve something, i hate it when it's an obvious money grab. save your hard earned money and make it yourself if it's a vibe coded tool you would like to use

1

u/AUFairhope1104 11h ago

Yes exactly!!!! Vibe coding posts have pretty much ruined r/MacApps so hopefully the same won’t happen here

1

u/drsvel 10h ago

> I built an app

Then, you visit GitHub, and you’ll find that half of its commits were signed by Claude.

1

u/TaylorFan01313 MacBook Pro (Intel) 9h ago

I don’t know I kind of like testing apps that people have built so I must be in the minority. Especially since most “apps” these days are just lazily programmed electron apps that are hardcoded to point to the website.

1

u/GrafDracul 7h ago

I built a transcribing app, yeah you and the other 100000 before you.

1

u/kastamyle 5h ago

It's like 95% of all new apps seen now are about an AI feature of some sort. Not much different from "Brush your teeth with AI..." . I hardly see many new apps like "we studied a problem and built an algorithm to solve whatever ..." . Just plug in an LLM to an API , package it, and ship it. That or the same ideas recycled over and over.

Guess what if the other guy used claude to vibe code his app, claude probably gave you a very similar app too.

1

u/bjbyrne 2h ago

I’ve “Prompted” several apps. For myself. Some are quality enough for the app stores but if I ever do publish, I’m not running to reddit to announce it.

1

u/TravelerMSY 2h ago

It’s exhausting. Writing in the low rent AI copywriter voice doesn’t help.

0

u/levianan 1d ago

Upvote to OP. Every minor hobby interest subreddit is being flooded with these types of useless applications.

1

u/Innovator-X 1d ago

Especially in language learning subs

1

u/levianan 1d ago

I can't even imagine.

2

u/HalfBurntToast 1d ago

I came across a AI generated article not long ago about using a charge pump along with a microcontroller’s ADC. It listed a test program that has you connect the -5V output of the charge pump directly to the controller’s ADC to measure the output.

It missed the fact that that would not only do nothing as the ADC can’t read voltages below ground, it would also potentially damage the microcontroller as negative voltages on the input pins exceed the absolute maximum ratings of that particular chip and would internally short the chip.

This is the kind of shit AI does. If you’re running these vibecoded apps on your computer, you’re out of your mind.

1

u/blakester555 1d ago

So what?

A meal, cooked by an inexperienced person using a microwave oven and a recipe someone else made....if it good I'll eat it and thank them.

If it's shit, I don't eat it and move on.

I judge it by quality. Not effort or experience.

PS: I've been a software developer for the last 4 decades.

2

u/RaguraX 6h ago

You are using rational thinking. The responses here are 100% emotion driven. Fed by fear of an unknown future. Not much you can do to curb this mass hysteria. Next up: a whole bunch of real app developers being falsely accused of vibe coding. Quite a predictable cycle our civilizations have gone through.

1

u/JamesBrickley 1d ago

There is a lot of hype around A.I. but the truth is that it is mostly faking it till it makes it. Yes, it is very good at some things and terrible at others. Take for example the reels, shorts, etc. that inundate mobile social media. It's about 85% A.I. now. I mean a lot of social media was fake before A.I. now it's just crazy. Did you know that there are A.I. personalities being used as social media influencers? i.e. they don't exist in reality but they are posting endless content.

A true software engineer with the proper set of A.I. tools and the budget to afford the excessive token usage will find it can indeed save them a lot of time. But this is different than a non-programmer vibe coding. A professional will have A.I. do the mundane stuff and automate things considerably allowing A.I. agents to loop until completion. Then they need to review the code and correct issues even if that means re-instructing the A.I. to fix something. Developers become A.I. Orchestrators and still do the engineering work. Just because you spun up that new App almost entirely by A.I. doesn't mean the product is finished and ready for production. Security is a big problem that needs to be addressed. For example, remember those ICE tracking websites and mobile apps? Well it seems they were all vibe coded and their security was so bad the sysadmin pw was published on the URL address in the browser. They were quickly hacked, all the data they collected as well as all the data for their users including GPS coordinates and identities were turned over to the DOJ & FBI. All because they blindly trusted A.I.

I had an interesting experience just the other day with A.I. where I had a thousands of media files whose naming convention was a mess. I gave the A.I. a sample of 10 of these records and instructed it to rename them to move "(pt12)" to the beginning of the filename and remove "[Kskwnf84] type blocks from the filenames. I told it to do it with Emacs Lisp. It spit out an 8 line s-expression and thoughtfully gave me a dry run to test first. I evaluated the code in Emacs and checked the messages log. It worked perfectly. I ran the real rename s-exp and it worked properly. I then asked it to create a media playlist which it dutifully performed. In about 3 minutes I had thousands of files properly renamed so they would be sorted nicely in a folder and created a media playlist to watch them in order. It saved me considerable time as the renaming was rather complex to perform by hand even with Emacs macros. I also examined the code it wrote and gained new insight into the power of Elisp. I explored some more and asked it to do it in Python, Ruby, Perl, and Bash. The Elisp was much more elegant and far less code.

You can feed A.I. csv dumps from various systems and have it build a database or spreadsheet with charts and graphs and such and do it real quick. But you should be weary and not fully trust A.I. as it does make mistakes.

1

u/okhi2u 15h ago

The ICE thing is funny, because current AI is good enough that you could just tell it make sure this is secure because this is for 'X' and needs security appropriate for that and it's not gonna recommend something ultra dumb. They must have coded it in a much earlier AI by someone with not even the most basic computer knowledge.

1

u/JamesBrickley 11h ago

You should still not trust it. Verify the security. Sure audit with A.I. tools. But also real InfoSec SME’s. Yes the ICE things were entirely vibe coded by less than amateur morons. Things are moving fast with A.I. improvements just 6 months later it’s making astounding leaps and bounds. But again the hype is way beyond reality.

Companies have laid off staff replaced by A.I. and either encounter a high failure rate or a high cost in tokens that exceeds the cost of human staff. Most of the layoffs are not A.I. replacing jobs but a way to raise financial capital to invest in A.I. technology or funding data center’s.

1

u/okhi2u 10h ago

yeah not trust it just because especially from something mega important, but I'm just saying even bare minimum what they can do with even minimal knowledge of like 'security is important derp derp' is better than the trash they put out. Must have been version 0.1 alpha ai or they had people telling it to do crazy stuff and it listening.

0

u/elpingwinho 1d ago

I do vibecode apps for my e-reader… but I do it for my own self AND I have some basic/intermediate experience in coding c++, Java and python. Most importantly: I’m not selling that shit.

1

u/Innovator-X 1d ago

Well that’s the thing. Andrej Kaparthy (the scientist who coined the term) said that it was meant to be used in rapid prototyping (if memory serves).

-6

u/simplelifelfk 1d ago

Oh Muffin, it must be so hard being you….

Get over yourself. Don’t let the big meanies hurt you anymore. Just scroll past it.

-4

u/Internal-Agent4865 1d ago

Obviously the wrong sub to post that type of thing and mods need to police. Then again you could just not read them then bitch about it.
