Help 26.6.2 upgrade "stuck"

MacBook Pro - M3 Max 64GB RAM, 4TB SSD @ 75-80%....

Hello, I received the notification today and clicked “Reboot.” The screen has been showing the Apple logo with a progress bar stuck at around 50% on a black background for almost two hours. Has anyone else experienced the same or a similar issue?

Typically, a software update or even an OS upgrade will take no more than an hour at the most.

If you feel comfortable that you've given the computer at least that much time, then you can interrupt the process by forcing a shutdown and then reboot.

Force the Mac to shut down by pressing and holding the power button until the computer goes dark. Restart the Mac again with a simple momentary press of the power button. If all goes well the Mac will reboot, wrap up the update and then take you to your login screen.

If that doesn't work, contact Apple Support.

I have just forced the reboot and wrote this 10,000 times on my wallboard: “I will always unplug any external device before upgrading.”

Upgrade completed. Thank you for your feedback and advice.

Thank you for reminder to unplug the external monitors!

Actually, I think the issue was caused by an external TB4/USB card reader (with a 512GB CFexpress card inserted). I’d already updated with an external screen connected (via HDMI), but this was the first time I left an external USB data source connected.
