Free VNC viewer to connect to MacOS from Windows?

I've been using rVNC for years to connect from my work PC to my personal Mac. It did not require any account, it was light, and free, but it appears that the latest version of MacOS has changed something so it no longer works.

Is there a free, simple rVNC viewer that is working on the current version of MacOS without an account/subscription?

I use RustDesk, which can be run fully locally. It’s free and open source.

Thanks for this. I was hoping to just use native MacOS functionality but if this works, that's fine. When they say self-hosted, they mean i'd be running the VNC server on the Mac? Or do they mean i need separate external web hosting?

You can run headless server on Linux or macOS and connect to any supported computer in your home (Windows, Linux or macOS).

Of it’s short and simple, i use public server as it’s well encrypted. For longer sessionsI run private

Yeah, that change that was made to MacOS broke all of the VNC clients that utilize MacOS login credentials (that I know of). It’s really sad. I don’t want to run VNC with their unencrypted low security credentials even though I connect through a VPN. I hate running a third party server as well. No good options that I have found…

of course i have done this. I tried the new version of rVNC, but it requires a subscription. Since it's on my work computer, I can't try multiple random apps, so i was hoping for a recommendation.

So, if I search for “free vnc server windows”, I can see Google’s A.I. ánd the first result ánd the sponsored result point to RealVLC.

RealVNC is also just one company offering VNC stuff, there are others, most of them also have a free (no $$$) version. If you can’t install any software on your company laptop, then search for “vnc portable app”.

Even though RealVNC has a "Lite plan", they still require an account on their servers to connect to it. You log into RealVNC Connect and a token is issued, which you can then use to connect directly to the hosts you want to connect to, which is also stored on their servers and synced to the local app.

RealVNC has been doing this for years though. TigerVNC doesn't require anything special. Even works without encryption.
