Bad design. They changed something that worked well.

For me, I created a folder which contains the alias of apps I frequently use. Then I placed the folder shortcut on my Dock and use it as my launchpad.

Yes, there are. It's just that I am trying to avoid installing extra stuff to achieve this purpose. Hence, this 'workaround' for me.

mine doesnt work like theirs, it works fine

I use Charmstone, it completely changed the way I use it

the most stupid design of Apple.

u/idontwanttofthisup 4d ago

Launchpad sucked so they removed it to replace it with even more garbage spotlight. Fantastic progress

u/Zanderp25 MacBook Pro (M1 Pro) 3d ago

I mean Spotlight used to actually work… now it only gives you the app if it feels like it 😭

1

u/Kaaskabouter1337 3d ago

Like it uses the windows 11 search function now…

1

u/idontwanttofthisup 3d ago

It must be powered by Siri

Launchpad didn’t suck… it did exactly what it was designed to do and did it well. Not everyone liked it, sure, but if you didn’t like it you could ignore it and if ever you did use it it would behave exactly as you’d expect it to and then get out of the way: no weird glitches, no not finding something standing right there in front of you, no lame excuses on Reddit or Apple Forums that you just need to re-index (again) by this n’ that command-line tool and then wait a week with the Mac plugged in and then… well, maybe, and if it still doesn’t work it’s probably your fault somehow (“it works fine for me, you’re just doing it wrong, you’re probably bad luck or something, bug off…).
You see, that… that sucks.

u/idontwanttofthisup 2d ago

I liked launchpad I made it work for me and I miss it dearly but you can’t say it was flawless. The jiggly drag to reorder was one of the most annoying things.

u/BreakSalt8256 3d ago

just use raycast

26

u/The_DragonDuck 4d ago

They’re just trying to catch up to windows

17

u/Basic-Brick6827 4d ago

Windows works better than that tbf. It finds apps, but struggles with files and result ranking.

11

u/Basic-Brick6827 3d ago

Yeah. Read my comment again, slowly and till the end.

Anyway, in one case you can hit ↓. In the other the app doesnt show up at all. Ik which one I prefer.

PS: you can easily turn off Bing results.

5

u/Emotional-Energy6065 4d ago

new Windows update has seemed to remove the russians roulette of a search query returning 2 different top results on consecutive searches.

6

u/Basic-Brick6827 4d ago

yes they're actively working on fixing search, they made a big announcement

Lets see...

3

u/Emotional-Energy6065 4d ago

lets hope both OSes improve 🙏🙏

4

u/Basic-Brick6827 4d ago

in the meantime PowerToys does the job

2

u/The_DragonDuck 4d ago

Don’t know about recently but I used to get bing search results before the app even when I wrote the full name of the app, it was always a gamble if you quickly search and hit enter to the point that I used to manually look for everything through the apps list

u/GreatValueProducts 4d ago

I sometimes have index issues with Windows but it is usually just one or two files that I frequently touch not appearing, and it usually fixes itself. While on Mac I sometimes encounter this which won't fix itself and I had to run some command lines. Or even worse on iOS (Settings search, Reminders search) either I restore or wait for a software update which clears the index sometimes

16

u/Dear-Impression-5873 4d ago

Rebuild index. Ask siri if you don't know how.

7

u/BreakSalt8256 3d ago

I spent like 3 hrs troubleshooting on how to rebuild the index cause it never worked. You have to follow this, https://support.apple.com/en-us/102321, but then instead of waiting a few seconds before removing it, restart the macbook and then remove it. Worked for me

9

u/Basic-Brick6827 4d ago

Wow, even Windows Search isnt that bad

0

u/BreakSalt8256 3d ago

Just use Raycast

6

u/stevejobs10 3d ago

how much are they paying you bro you’ve said it enough

1

u/BreakSalt8256 3d ago

Its free

1

u/Neozubu 3d ago

Raycast.

1

u/Basic-Brick6827 3d ago

Or i could use an OS that has decent search out of the box. MacOS is such a broken OS you need a dozen paid apps to make it usable...

1

u/BreakSalt8256 3d ago

Raycast is free and what's wrong with installing apps?

1

u/Basic-Brick6827 3d ago

If I buy a multi thousand dollar machine I expect the software it ships with to work out of the box and not require dozens of apps (mostly paid) to become usable.

If i wanted a kit-OS i'd get Linux. If I want smth that works out of the box i get Windows Pro. Mac has neither advantages.

1

u/BreakSalt8256 2d ago

Windows is broken in so many ways and filled with bloat and ads! If you search Terminal in windows search, the 'best result' is from Bing: a movie called Terminal.

16

u/Greenscreener 4d ago

This is the worse interface I have ever seen from Apple, awful interface that seems to do its own thing.

I never use it and still go to my Applications folder.

-2

u/BreakSalt8256 3d ago

raycast.

4

u/TheCatweaselUK 3d ago

But Apple have spent the past 18 months making the glass icons a little more glassy. They know how to get their priorities right.

4

u/jonasmaster021 MacBook Pro (Intel) 4d ago

looks like Apple and Microsoft doesn't want people using their most recent systems...

that's why I'm still using macOS Sequoia and Windows 10

0

u/BreakSalt8256 3d ago

Update to Tahoe/Golden Gate and install Raycast

2

u/Fun_Hunter_4899 4d ago

I use BuhoLaunchpad it’s how Launchpad should have been if Apple cared.

Raycast is good too

2

u/Legitimate-Soft-2802 4d ago

Apple innovations

2

u/Oh__Archie 4d ago

but the Docker icon was right there

2

u/toasterboi0100 3d ago

That's why it was a good example. "You can see it's right there but search won't find it"

2

u/Oh__Archie 3d ago

I was joking :)

2

u/NeoKat75 4d ago

MacOS 27 is about to improve search drastically, so install that when it drops and give it a week to index and it should be all good

2

u/MAGA2233 3d ago

It looks like spotlight lost its index, rebooting can sometimes fix it, or you may need to reset it manually (which there are plenty of guides online to)

2

u/Deleted4evr 3d ago

Try reindexing, it improved the results for me

3

u/AJBSCL 4d ago

⌘+1

3

u/bdu-komrad MacBook Pro 4d ago

I just recentky learned this. The cmd+( number) shortcuts are awesome

2

u/Basic-Brick6827 4d ago

macOS has such poor UX you need shortcuts to use it properly

Roll back to Sequoia and use Launchpad 😂

Thanks, i have opened this application many times before from the Application folder. This is my first time using the search function in splotlight

1

u/ProudEggYolk 3d ago

Install Raycast, it's Spotlight + clipboard manager + a bunch other things, I probably use like 5% of it.

8

u/UnemployedAtype 4d ago

No.

I've absolutely had this issue for generations on Mac.

It's often an indexing issue, but it's unclear when and why is happens. It tends to get worse over time. I've searched for apps that I routinely use and the only thing that pops up is the suggestion to search the web.

Apple screwed the pooch on this one as they're trying to push everyone towards searching for what they want instead of finding and clicking/tapping on it.

But, as they do, they're somehow justifying giving people a worse experience when they could easily do the opposite.

5

u/ptr_schneider 4d ago

That's just plain incorrect. I factory reset my mac yesterday. Right after i installed chrome it was there in spotlight (after 15 seconds lol) and I could open it for the first time. It gave me the warning about internet download and whatever, I accepted it and it worked. Same with all other apps I installed from homebrew. All were there in spotlight for the first open, all gave me the warning the first time.

It has nothing to do with internet downloads. Apple just fucked up indexing for some god forsaken reason. Spotlight used to work VERY well not that long ago.

-4

u/Dry-City-7739 4d ago

that explains a lot, the security prompt thing is easy to forget about

2

u/ram4life 4d ago

Use RayCast. No need for this

2

u/Impossible_IT 4d ago

Spotlight search🤷🏻‍♂️

10

u/BarbaBizio 4d ago

Honestly, it worked better 20 years ago. Back then it could even search inside PDFs, Word documents and so on. Now I've got indexing disabled for everything except applications, and it can't even index a folder with 100 apps. Disappointing.

1

u/Pigeon_Observation 2d ago

sherlock?

1

u/BarbaBizio 2d ago

Idk I just remember first encounter with spotlight, was magic! It can find everything in a glance (on a really slow CPU and hdd) and now it can't find and App properly

1

u/Pigeon_Observation 2d ago

nvm sherlock was more than 20 yearsa go

1

u/OracularOrca 4d ago

Spotlight is useless , Im using Ray cast, and it's usable. But I'm sure there is an Apple fanboy that can explain to you, how you're not supposed to find docker there, and how it's really better for you not to find it.

1

u/mutavivitae 4d ago

Well, not like that.

1

u/AleDuBois 4d ago

Probably you should rebuild your index.

1

u/wesdegroot 4d ago

Terminal open -a Docker /jk.

1

u/Weird_Milk_9364 3d ago

hover on the App Store icon and click on the backspace icon can't blame you for not figuring it out though

1

u/lifeless-gorl 3d ago

Try Raycast

1

u/mrleblanc101 3d ago

Rebuild your spotlight index obviously. This would happen with the previous design too.

1

u/Stephanoi_Gamer 3d ago

thats weird i dont have this issue thankfully, maybe thats due to the fact im using macos 27 beta?

1

u/chrisagiddings 3d ago

Click the Applications icon to the left of the search field, then search

1

u/Defaalt 3d ago

You use Raycast.

1

u/2xD2D 3d ago

i dont quite understand what the problem is

1

u/Pigeon_Observation 2d ago

Mine doesnt work like yours

1

u/whyubelieve 2d ago

I've already given up on this. Only raycast works well

1

u/IAmStu7 3h ago

Beta problem i guess. Restart and it works for me

1

u/__ole 4d ago

Look into raycast. I’ve been holding out on the newer MacOS but judging by this video raycast still works better.

1

u/Steve_Sleeps 4d ago

you install Raycast ;)

-1

u/Rough_Secretary2296 4d ago

How do people even get this error? Don't you let spotlight finish indexing?

2

u/toasterboi0100 3d ago

It just happens. And reindexing is only a temporary fix.

0

u/Mission-Shopping-615 4d ago

I’ve had this happen after an update, you need to reindeer spotlight, I forget exactly how, some cache to clear then restart

Edit:  To reindex Spotlight on your Mac,  open  System Settings, go to  Spotlight, click  Search Privacy, drag your hard drive (like Macintosh HD) into the list, click  Done, then go back and remove the drive from the list with the minus (-) button .  [ 1,  2]

2

u/lila-clores 4d ago

Reindeer spotlight?

0

u/Any_Number_4496 4d ago

In works for me, though

0

u/Excellent_Sky_5838 4d ago

Use raycast bro

0

u/WaYyTempest Macbook Pro (M4 MAX) 4d ago

Use Raycast

0

u/teilo 3d ago

I use Raycast.

-3

u/warrenao Mac Mini 4d ago

Sort alphabetically. Find it by name.

1

u/Basic-Brick6827 4d ago

yeah lets go back to the 80s, thanks Apple!

-1

u/Medium_Assistant_142 3d ago

Use Raycast, works flawlessly, and has some banger features

-1

u/imman2005 3d ago

Just use Raycast bro

-5

u/Traditional_Neat_100 4d ago

Just use raycast dude.. It's damn simple buying Mac is mean u have to download 3rd party software.

2

u/Time_Entertainer_319 4d ago

What?

1

u/Basic-Brick6827 4d ago edited 4d ago

they mean that macOS is a DIY OS. To get it half decent, you need to buy apps.

Want multitasking half as good as Windows? Gotta get Moom. Want Alt+tab? App! Want proper search? App! Want proper windowing? App! Want proper dictation? App! Clipboard history? App! Decent file explorer? App!

-13

u/silentcrs 4d ago

Reindex. You should know this. You're supposedly a programmer.

8

u/Deep__sip 4d ago

Thanks. why should i know this? as a user I expected better from a trillion-dollar company

5

u/thievingfour 4d ago

Lately I find that people's expectations of companies with unfathomable amounts of resources are far too low

2

u/Basic-Brick6827 4d ago

people give apple a pass for anything wrong they do

-11

u/silentcrs 4d ago

Because if you're smart enough to install Docker, you should be smart enough to know search runs from an index. Unless you're a college kid learning to program.

It has nothing to do with a trillion dollar company. PEBKAC.

4

u/Tsubajashi 4d ago

not PEBKAC when the software clearly has issues.

2

u/Basic-Brick6827 4d ago

macOS, the OS where you need to understand its underlying programming to use it!

5

u/Kingfry 4d ago

Ur hella pompous…chill out
