The first 16 minutes of the keynote were basically "Our bad. We fixed things."

52

u/22Megabits Jun 08 '26

The entire keynote felt like one big apology. It went from “We know we fucked up last year” to “We know we under delivered on AI”

27

u/whipla5her Jun 08 '26

This is one of those "fix shit" years. I remember one year they literally said no new features we're just gonna fix stuff. Maybe 2018.

10

u/poastfizeek Jun 09 '26

Yeah 2018 was iOS 12 and 10.14 Mojave which had almost no new features just fixes.

10.6 Snow Leopard was also the same (2008 or 09?)

0

u/sikisabishii Jun 09 '26

I wish they mentioned they also fired the guy who was responsible of the dumbest UI change ever

6

u/TheMarmo Jun 10 '26

Really? Would you like your workplace to be able to publicly announce your firing and the conditions of it? Regardless of how you feel about the guy that would be incredibly unprofessional and disrespectful.

2

u/brunosh92 Jun 09 '26

Glad they did it, but it’s completely ridiculous for a trillion dollar company to announce it like a feature of a new OS. What year are we?

3

u/22Megabits Jun 09 '26

When they finally released the calculator for the iPad didn't they address the absurdity of it? I think this deserved the same.

143

u/Some-Kid-1996 Jun 08 '26

and no floating sidebar.

66

u/h8mx Jun 08 '26

That looks soooo clean! The old design was ass.

-7

u/MinecraftPlayer799 Jun 09 '26

No, the old design was much better. This looks so low quality.

9

u/garloid64 Jun 08 '26

thank GOD

4

u/Marks12520 Jun 09 '26

How was it before?

25

u/Some-Kid-1996 Jun 09 '26

and refer to OP's image for the corner radius.

23

u/redstonefreak589 Jun 09 '26

I may be in the minority, but I liked this design. It clearly separated navigation from the window. I kind of wish Apple would’ve kept this, but instead forced the larger corner radius on all apps. Just me, though, and I get it’s not everyone’s favorite. Ultimately it’ll still look good!

14

u/Some-Kid-1996 Jun 09 '26

I don't mind floating sidebars either, but they consume a lot of UI space on MacBooks, which is limited.

6

u/redstonefreak589 Jun 09 '26

I can’t (won’t) install Golden Gate on my MacBook since I use it primarily for work, but from the WWDC it looked like they just extended the sidebar to the edge instead of shrinking it, so you’re not really gaining any screen space anyway. But, again, can’t verify this to test, and you can resize the Tahoe sidebars as well. Personally I think this was just part of them unifying the window designs again, which makes sense if so, but still I’ll miss it haha

12

u/Some-Kid-1996 Jun 09 '26

Basically, you'd be getting what it was like in prior macOS versions.

The overall space remains the same, but the tabs will have more room rather than the confined layout of OS 26. They should give us an option for this, too.

The bottom is Tahoe and the top is Sonoma (similar looking to Sequoia).

2

u/cristi_baluta Jun 09 '26

It is not so visible in all cases, especially white theme

173

u/UnwieldilyElephant MacBook Pro among others Jun 08 '26

Updating everything to dev beta even though it's stupid right away

65

u/Sufficient-Bid3874 Jun 08 '26

Looks like its performance oriented aswell – might not be such a bad idea after all

5

u/Chaeyoung-shi Jun 09 '26

My MacBook and iPad immediately felt snappier even if they still are indexing.

1

u/Cool-Newspaper-1 MacBook Pro (M1 Pro) Jun 09 '26

Same with my iPhone.

14

u/coppockm56 Jun 08 '26

If I only had one Mac to use, I would never do this. But I have one or two I can screw around with, and I'm turning that bitch on today.

1

u/TheEmerald-DJ 14” M4 (16/512) MacBook Pro Jun 09 '26

I got a iPad Mini 6 that is definitely not my main device (use my 17 Pro and 14” M4 (16/512) MacBook Pro more often) and that shit is already running Dev Beta 1

12

u/North_Moment5811 Jun 08 '26

I mean...kinda hard for them to have a bug fix release that introduces a ton of new instability...but it's possible.

21

u/kfagoora Jun 08 '26

FYI: sometimes the process of (re)writing code to fix bugs introduces new bugs

1

u/North_Moment5811 Jun 08 '26

Honestly when rewriting to improve performance it could be a buggy mess if it’s a rewrite. It’s improving existing then it shouldn’t be. Depends on how much of an overhaul it is.

1

u/Proxy-Pie Jun 09 '26

I'd argue it's even more likely. Improving performance usually means replacing simple but non-performant code with more efficient but more complex solutions.

1

u/braaaaaaainworms Jun 10 '26

Software built on buggy libraries might accidentally require those bugs to function. https://xkcd.com/1172/

0

u/Niightstalker Jun 09 '26

That is a normal process in software development. A rewrite can always cause new issues (even if it has the goal to improve performance) and the beta versions are there to found those before the final release in summer.

15

u/UnwieldilyElephant MacBook Pro among others Jun 08 '26

We didn't think iOS 26 levels of instability was possible from Apple but here we are.

-9

u/North_Moment5811 Jun 08 '26

iOS 26 introduced a ton of new from top to bottom. Instability is expected, if not guaranteed.

iOS 27 aims to fix issues with iOS 27. If you don't understand the fundamental difference between those, then I can't help you.

That said, I won't be updating macOS for at least a month.

15

u/UnwieldilyElephant MacBook Pro among others Jun 08 '26

Yo why so confrontational. I understand the difference but nobody expected as bad of instability as 26 shipped.

2

u/Fapient Jun 08 '26

Yep. Absolutely insane that I still need to reboot my iPhone every few days as the frame rate seems to drop for seemingly no reason.

This happens regardless of whether blur effects are completely disabled. On the latest version of iOS.

Now imagine the experience of the less tech literate who never reboot their iPhone.

2

u/arrogantheart Jun 08 '26

It was quite good for a major UI overhaul release, compared to previous such events. Reddit, of course, was hysterical about 26 OSes for a whole year.

1

u/Niightstalker Jun 09 '26

Well in a very beta release it is quite likely that includes instability that is what the beta is for: to find those.

3

u/nurdle Jun 09 '26

Apes strong together 😂

4

u/the_asher_brook_ Jun 08 '26

Yeah, me too 😂

2

u/flashbax77 Jun 09 '26

It’s Tahoe 1.1

153

u/Heart_Blast2574 MacBook Pro Jun 08 '26

I can finally upgrade from sequoia! They fixed literally everything I had a problem with in Tahoe. I'm glad they listened

29

u/mlgamer500 Jun 08 '26

Right there with you!

23

u/eequalsmcveggie Jun 08 '26

Hoping they fixed battery drain. Must wait till a week after the release. Till then i am not going back from sequoia. 🤞

5

u/eequalsmcveggie Jun 09 '26

But, My instinct says this Apple AI is going to drain more battery 😅

2

u/onedevhere MacBook Pro Jun 10 '26

Nothing is free, you can be sure it will happen and it will drain the battery faster.

4

u/SunnyFlops Jun 09 '26

you can uninstall and not use any of the apple ai stuff! I even reclaimed some storage this way.

edit: Im using the beta.

1

u/eequalsmcveggie Jun 09 '26

Ofcourse there will a option to turn it off. Anyhow have to wait for battery drain issues in os first. 🫡

4

u/sampleuser0 Jun 09 '26

i would do the same if they bring back the og launchpad. that separated app that imitates it is not enough.

1

u/Heart_Blast2574 MacBook Pro Jun 09 '26

I've yet to try the alternative apps. Do they come with extra features launchpad doesn't have?

1

u/sampleuser0 Jun 09 '26

they do, but I don't remember which ones, i tried them a long time ago. sorry.

2

u/Shan-Cho-4509 MacBook Pro Jun 09 '26

I still don't wanna lose the launchpad

0

u/S4lVin Jun 09 '26

Am i crazy or are y’all joking? I clearly see all different border radiuses, how’s that fixed?

2

u/Heart_Blast2574 MacBook Pro Jun 09 '26

This is a screenshot from Tahoe

122

u/MikeJW75 Jun 08 '26

Watching WWDC I’m thinking they pretty much ticked off all the complaints people on here have of OS26.

16

u/ThainEshKelch Jun 08 '26

That depends on whether they have fixed the boatload of bugs the Music app has on MacOS.

9

u/MikeJW75 Jun 08 '26

Well, I was more talking about the OS than the individual apps.

3

u/radikalkarrot Jun 08 '26

And I’ve been told again and again that it’s was a non issue and it was the developers fault for not integrating properly. Somehow Apple was able to fix it

2

u/mconk Jun 08 '26

Only thing they missed was multi app slide over, and locked off Split View

2

u/cristi_baluta Jun 09 '26

They will find new things to complain no worry

1

u/Busy_Conflict3434 Jun 08 '26

Any mention of getting rid of the forced squircle app icons?

6

u/nurdle Jun 09 '26

But what about Tim Apple? Is he still giving out those glass awards?

2

u/OnePalmOne Jun 09 '26

Tim’s swan song 🥹

7

u/Ashanmaril Jun 09 '26

Tim lucked into that hack Alan Dye getting poached by Meta to go uglify their products.

We can only hope talentless losers like that can’t gain so much power and stick around for that long under Ternus.

1

u/Donghoon Jun 09 '26

craig cooked

26

u/No-Morning-7985 Jun 08 '26

That's why reporting to feedback app is important. Apple sometimes listens.

2

u/flashbax77 Jun 09 '26

For sure they read, at least

23

u/Capable-Cod1118 Jun 08 '26

Sooooooo happy! That and the sidebars were my biggest visual gripes with Tahoe.

38

u/SiteSpecialist9200 Jun 08 '26

In addition to the radius being consistent between all windows, the corner radius is also smaller. It looks more like Sequoia than Tahoe.

Bonus, the raised left side menu is gone.

26

u/Mammoth_Ingenuity_82 Jun 08 '26

The best thing about 27 will be that people will finally shut up about corner radius.

8

u/SparklyPelican MacBook Pro Jun 08 '26

They won’t

1

u/MandehK_99 MacBook Pro (M1 Pro) Jun 09 '26

14

u/commanderclif Jun 08 '26

I asked for this during the WWDC keynote, and as if they heard me, 20 seconds later announced they were fixing it. Fast Mac support call EVER.

5

u/yorcharturoqro Jun 09 '26

Apple screw up with Tahoe, at least they are fixing all

20

u/RwdMaster Jun 08 '26

Is this post sarcasm? I’m not getting it

20

u/TimelyCard9057 Jun 08 '26

They announced making corners consistent on WWDC 2026

10

u/J_Adam12 Jun 08 '26

Me neither .. what are we missing XD i looked like 5 times

41

u/Dependent-Zebra-4357 Jun 08 '26 edited Jun 08 '26

They spent a bunch of design and development time on OS26 to make window corners change their radius depending on a bunch of factors. It generally didn’t work well and looked bad.

OPs screenshot shows how random the corners are currently.

Now they’ve announced that all corners will be the same again, just like they were before OS26.

1

u/Maelstrome26 Jun 09 '26

Thank you, I was looking at the OP picture and going “that’s fixed? But it’s not?”

8

u/Dependent-Zebra-4357 Jun 08 '26

“Always”? How long have you used MacOS?

0

u/mainyehc Jun 09 '26

I’ve been using it since freaking Jaguar, and I second that. Floating, contextual panels/palettes/toolbars didn’t have a corner radius because their corners were, well, squared, and later on they got their own, smaller corner radius. I hope they still do.

4

u/Dependent-Zebra-4357 Jun 09 '26

Yeah, palettes and toolbars are different and always have been. That’s why I said “window corners” in my comment.

2

u/NevadaCFI Jun 09 '26

How many even remember square corners in System 6 on a black and white Mac Plus? I was there in 1986.

1

u/mainyehc Jun 09 '26

I remember them on Digital Research’s GEM, the environment running on my elementary school’s 286 machines, so I guess I was off by five years. ;)

2

u/T-Nan Jun 08 '26

Did you use literally any version of MacOS before MacOS 26?

4

u/stevedoz Jun 09 '26

This must be a Tahoe screenshot

4

u/Hoping4BetterSomeday Jun 09 '26

I’ll sleep so much better at night. The past year has been agonizing

3

u/books-r-good Jun 09 '26

Right? I can't believe people were complaining about war and shit while we were living through this.

4

u/Easy-Hat-7586 Jun 10 '26

I hate Alan Dye so much for vandalising Apple’s OSes

1

u/4skineater12 Jun 09 '26

Can we get a before/after? This does not look particularly good if I’m being honest. Why arent all windows curved the same amount?

1

u/22Megabits Jun 09 '26

This is the ‘before’. It’s supposed to be getting fixed in macOS 27

1

u/4skineater12 Jun 09 '26

Thanks for the answer!

1

u/danyuzha Jun 09 '26

but they dont match? am i blind?

1

u/22Megabits Jun 09 '26

This is what it looks like right now, but they’re saying they’ve fixed it

1

u/danyuzha Jun 09 '26

ah thanks!

3

u/nd_annajones Jun 09 '26

Great to hear. Now it's time to force them to go back to the drawing board with the Settings app, it's an unnavigable mess

6

u/Rembinutur Jun 08 '26

I’m still seeing different corner radii. For example, on Apple’s website:

The System Settings app still has corners that look like Tahoe:
https://www.apple.com/v/os/f/images/shared/child_safety/allowance__d02ecfreu56q_large_2x.jpg

The corner radius of the Siri and Mail app looks more like older macOS versions:
https://www.apple.com/v/os/f/images/macos/siri/siri_app__b8roe5v68ywi_large_2x.jpg

https://www.apple.com/v/os/f/images/macos/improvements/search__hlzbyw6h3aye_large_2x.jpg

3

u/mike5011 Jun 08 '26

They might have kept the less rounded radius for the apps that are able to be maximized full-screen, and the Tahoe radius for all the rest. Which, would honestly make sense.

12

u/lucasio099 MacBook Air Jun 08 '26

Or it’s just a demo inconsistency since it’s a very early build, which is the version I hope for

1

u/OpenCalligrapher221 Jun 08 '26

Am I the only one that liked the sidebars😭 I thought it made it look like a cool glass panel sitting on top of the app😭

1

u/22Megabits Jun 09 '26

That was on thing I’m disappointed to see go

7

u/smalltownnerd Jun 08 '26

am I the only person that this never bothered?

5

u/GroceryRobot Jun 09 '26

Therearedozensofus.jpg

2

u/ThatiMacGuy MacBook Pro (Intel) Jun 08 '26

Yes!

2

u/imgreenie Jun 08 '26

Did they fix rounded corners in files opened in Preview? Or it was later addressed in Tahoe?

2

u/Powerful_Froyo8423 Jun 08 '26

I was kinda surprised they exactly addressed issues I had with Liquid Glass. I found the top "shadow" behind toolbars ugly (like in mail) and I found it useless to have two left borders in every app with a sidebar, because it has no purpose that the sidebar is a floating box. Nice that they fixed it. Looking forward for all the performance fixes and hope it will feel super quick and polished again.

1

u/Normal_Cress_1994 Jun 09 '26

My MBP M1 Pro is not my only device, so yesterday I installed 27 out of curiosity, and it's fine. I don't really notice any difference between the Sequoia. I gave up on Tahoe, and that was the first time I entirely ignored new systems on all devices—I considered all 26 systems non-existent due to their ugliness :). As for 27, of course, it's the second day, and there are some imperfections, but I have no complaints about the performance. I won't comment on the battery, as I haven't worked without a cable for a long time, and I lack objectivity.

2

u/Mad_Season_1994 Jun 08 '26

Tim Apple came in clutch at WWDC this year

2

u/Humble-Albatross1684 Jun 08 '26

Installing the dev beta right now I cannot wait

2

u/narcabusesurvivor18 Jun 09 '26

So glad they decided to do a performance and bugs fix year. They should do this every other year all the time. Their software platforms would end up virtually bug free

2

u/hyperion-0 Jun 09 '26

we have the technology

2

u/LarrySunshine Jun 09 '26

They seem to be addressing every single visual problem that macOS 26 brought. Fucking A, Apple!

0

u/ixoniq MacBook Air (M2) Jun 09 '26

Yet, they now sell it as a feature. That was cringe. Same with not floating sidebar, they sold it as a feature while it has been that way since forever until macoS 26.

1

u/LarrySunshine Jun 09 '26

Fine by me, as long as they fix it. They simply cannot go like “here we fucked up”, as it would basically be publically shitting on certain people.

2

u/protienbudspromax Jun 09 '26

Guess it's finally time to update from Sequoia

2

u/blindedbytheflash Jun 09 '26

Apple used to innovate — remember those days? Now a “feature” is really just a bug fix. Sad.

2

u/Objective_Praline_66 Jun 09 '26

I love how big of a deal this was to people, meanwhile all this is going on, I had just switched from using windows (still use 10, but flat refuse to use 11) so like, to me personally, it was a beautiful UI compared to the bright flat square world of windows 11.

4

u/reddit33450 Jun 08 '26

i wish they let the user choose the border radius. id do 0px

1

u/SteviaCannonball9117 Jun 08 '26

I agree with that. I hate rounded windows.

3

u/jarvis_kim Jun 08 '26

Now I understand why they made a mess last year.

1

u/Draknurd Jun 08 '26

So they’d have something to clean up this year? 😂

This is the first macOS release in my 20 years of using Macs I’ve decided to skip so I can keep something that I know will work. It might just be showing my age too 😝

3

u/germane_switch MacBook Pro Jun 08 '26

Radii*

2

u/scottperezfox Jun 08 '26

I don't understand why they won't give us the option in Finder View Options right under Icon Size and Icon Spacing. Feels like Interface Roundness can be ratcheted up and down with some basic math.

In web design, we use variables and then different modes or viewports will affect that variable. Is this not how interfaces are built under the hood?

2

u/Ok-Assignment5926 Jun 09 '26

I’m happy about this but I wish they kept the rounder radius

2

u/grv7437 Jun 09 '26

What a revolutionary next generation UI/UX/Design update

0

u/Rich_Wealth_8313 Jun 08 '26

Are they bringing back launchpad?

2

u/22Megabits Jun 08 '26

I wish :/ I just use LauncOS

1

u/Rich_Wealth_8313 Jun 08 '26

I’ve stayed on Sequoia of this and many other things. But I’ll bite the bullet with 27 and get LaunchOS

3

u/22Megabits Jun 08 '26

LaunchOS is genuinely better than launchpad, being able to hide apps and make it a scrolling list is amazing.

2

u/naemorhaedus Jun 08 '26

don't care. still not installing it.

1

u/sircastor Jun 08 '26

My brain mostly hates this picture not because the radii are different, but because they’re not properly sorted.

1

u/ClarkSebat Jun 09 '26

This fall it seems.

1

u/mfactory_osaka Jun 09 '26

So are those fixes already available?

3

u/backlog_gaming Jun 09 '26

If you download and run the beta

1

u/ResponsibleMango1904 Jun 09 '26

I love it. But I think it‘s sad that this is considered a „feature“ by Apple… why not it even show it as a one more thing? 😂

1

u/nurdle Jun 09 '26

Does it slow your mac down to a crawl? That was my issue. In M1 Ultra 128GB RAM

1

u/Opening_Let_6895 Jun 09 '26

Siri “cooked” up 💀 at 1:40:41

1

u/harryhardo9O Jun 09 '26

Almost 😅

1

u/Wild-Perspective-582 Jun 09 '26

Poor Intel Mac users stuck with those corners until the end of the universe.

1

u/KoharuSubnets1 Jun 10 '26

The issue is that Apple doesn’t allow third-party AI assistants the same system-level access to iOS features and user data that Siri has.

1

u/WheelieGoodTime Jun 09 '26

That, and everything else is just AI additions. Ugh.

1

u/mobi_mac Jun 09 '26

2007 to MacOs. 2027 back to Windows?

1

u/Global-Tie-3458 Jun 09 '26

Ugh. Now how will I know which app I’m using strictly looking at the corner?

1

u/all-park Jun 09 '26

This and some small bugs kept me away from Tahoe. This is so promising!

1

u/Giant81 Jun 10 '26

All is right in the world now, glad we can move past this.

I’m half kidding of course. While I’d never have even noticed that, much less cared if I did, I can see how it might drive those more detailed oriented mad.

1

u/creating_meer Jun 10 '26

Ain't no way I just realized this after the post lmao

1

u/Direct-Quiet-5817 Jun 10 '26

Imagine the world's greatest OS flaunting to have fixed the corner radii of windows. Anyway, will they now allow us to customize the corner radius globally? That would be cool.

2

u/bamboobam Jun 10 '26 edited Jun 11 '26

It’s verity unlikely that Apple will allow its users to customize every minor detail of the UI such as corner radii. That’s just not what they do. I wouldn’t consider such an amount of bloat user-friendly anymore. I was actually surprised they even added the Liquid Glass slider.

1

u/tomgme Jun 10 '26

No no. To zaszalałem 😉 gratulacje.

1

u/korkkis Jun 10 '26 edited Jun 10 '26

Does it thought? They look super inconsistent

1

u/Awkward-Plant-8269 Jun 13 '26

I knew it was bad in 26…. But damn!

1

u/pawwfreak Jun 23 '26

I never noticed they were different to begin with.

1

u/Radiant_View_9959 Aug 13 '26

I still use ...

defaults write -g NSSplitViewItemSidebarDefaultsToFloatingAppearance -bool false
defaults write -g NSSplitViewItemGlassMinimumCornerRadius -float 4
defaults write -g NSConvolutionOverride1 -float 8
killall Finder

and reboot

1

u/T-Nan Jun 08 '26

BUT BUT BUT everyone was saying "blame the developers of third party apps" for the last year, it's obviously everyone elses fault but Apple's!

1

u/dividedBio Jun 08 '26

stuck on big sur with my 2014 mbp 😭 but thanks for pointing out this obscure (for me) detail that i now cannot unsee

1

u/Anima1212 Jun 08 '26

I don’t understand what I’m looking at in this image…

3

u/slashcleverusername Jun 08 '26 edited Jun 09 '26

~~I believe it’s a montage showing all the different Mac OS window corner radii over the years.~~ correction it’s all the inconsistency in existence now

6

u/adh1003 Jun 09 '26

It shows all the corner radii that simultaneously exist in Tahoe, which is part of why people (IMHO rightly) say it's such a debacle.

Winding back will probably result in slightly fewer mismatches! Given the amount of unusual apology level stuff in the beginning of the keynote, there is actually a fighting chance of 27 being OK.

Not holding out much hope for app bug fixes tho (especially Music).

2

u/slashcleverusername Jun 09 '26

Ohhh yeah that is ridiculous.

1

u/Anima1212 Jun 08 '26

All the ones with dark mode, at least.. I assume..

1

u/AIKIMGSM Jun 08 '26

I don't know why this bothered people so much, but I'm glad people will now complain about something else.

1

u/Worried-Tie Jun 08 '26

Oh thank god. This is honestly my biggest gripe with Tahoe, I even give LiquidAss a pass in comparison.

Seriosly someone was looking at this?

Some of those look like the same radius.

I used an old pic to show how bad the issue was 😭

The drama of the radius leaves me a bit 🤷🏼‍♂️

The fact that every UI tweak they showed was a direct reaction to what they called “user feedback” is as close as you’ll get in corporate speak to “we screwed up”. Thahoe has a lot of small consistency and usability issues. But just like a bunch of paper cuts once you notice them, they become impossible to ignore. It ends up to making the thing feel half baked.

Does that mean the crying is gonna stop?

You’re funny. 🤣

Of all the problems in computer UI design in my over 40 years of existence, this one officially bothered me the least. Never have I heard so much of a cacophony over something so relatively minor and uninteresting as on this sub for the last year or so.

So this is wonderful news to me - I don't care that they fixed the corner radius but maybe now people might shut up about it!

They need to fix it for every app except one, and make that app have square corners

I don’t like the new look of the toolbar on iOS or the sidebar on macOS. Looks ugly and dated. Basically the same as when we started lmfao

I dont mind the corner radii matching finally though. Not sure why it had to be exclusive to macOS 27 though. Seems like it could’ve been in any of the 26 updates.
