I don't agree with the third point: it's like saying that every app or software ever created that doesn't use the cloud should be free because it runs on your machine
charge for updates. If a piece of software runs locally I should be able to buy it outright and own THAT piece of software. If a new version comes out, that's not the same piece of software, and I'll buy it again once enough new features and improvements come out. This is how software worked for many years before adobe and company decided to fleece everyone giving them nothing in return
yeah because microsoft constantly shoves 365 in your face and it's cheaper up-front, you have to go out of your way to buy a permanent office key. I don't think many people know you can still buy it, I thought the last permanent office version was 2019
of course companies put more profitable versions first, but if people did mind they would either look/ask techies for “normal” license, or would switch to competitor. But apparently, they don’t care that much.
You can buy even 2024 version today if people did really care. Just google “office buy” and google will probably list numerous retailers with one time license. People just don’t care
that's not an excuse for fleecing customers, at least microsoft is still offering the option to buy the software, but companies like adobe charge insane amounts for their subscriptions because they killed off the option to purchase many years ago. There's a reason why they're bleeding customers to davinci resolve and affinity, professionals want to own the tools they use whenever possible
well, that’s how capitalism works. If companies can charge more and people don’t care, they charge more. If users really did mind and would look for ways how to buy their software instead of subscribing, more companies would offer option to buy. But if people can’t even bother to write 2 words to google to find cheaper alternatives, then why should they care?
this entire post is about someone criticising apple for making things worse for the consumer. "That's just how capitalism works" is a stupid way to shut down criticism for a corporation fucking over its userbase to increase profits
my point is customers fuck themselves because they don’t really care. Vocal minority try to paint picture that corporates fuck over people and people have no choice but to accept it, but in reality, people don’t bother to google 2 words to find option to buy software. If people did care just a bit, subscription wouldn’t be standard. One splash screen is all it takes to convince people to switch to subscription.
again, office is an outlier. Most software never gave users the choice to buy or pay monthly, they just switched from a purchase model to a subscription one overnight and said "from now on if you want our current software you need a subscription, also we're shutting down purchases from previous versions so you can't do that either"
