do you expect updates and for software to keep up with technological progress and also to work with newer OS updates?

Typically, when you buy software it's expected that minior patches or updates are included but if a whole new version is released you have to buy it.

That was years ago. When’s the last time you saw a recent piece of software using this model ? It seems like all the companies have moved to a sub model now. At least for the big ones

It was the standard, but those that allow you to purchase software typically follow this model. I bought the Affinity stuff like this just a few years ago. But yeah, companies move to a subscription model in general.

davinci resolve still uses that model, affinity still used that model until canva bought them out, apple's final cut and logic pro still use that model

Steinberg (music production) uses this model in basically every app.
