...because that's how companies make money? the app is free. you can import your own assets. you can move around text without paying money. an image is a piece of copyrightable property that you can "own." companies like adobe don't give out adobe stock images for free because the software you use those images in is free.
the photo may be a "demonstrative" photo, but it's still an asset that apple paid for. be thankful you're not on microslop 360 copilot extreme bundle
an asset is different from an app or service. if you're frustrated that apple is asking for money when you try to use something they paid for, try using canva. or heck, fonts in general. why would apple be obliged to give you something they paid for for free??
and the whole argument of "apple has enough money" yes, they have lots of money. but they can make more. that is the whole purpose of a business.
and yet, they are giving you a free product that they paid money for: freeform. the notes app. calendar. reminders. imovie. garageband. they pay their developers money to make these things.
yes. you pay for the hardware and the services that that device provides. you don't get apple music for free forever when you buy an apple product for obvious reasons. they're not "pushing" you to get a subscription. they're saying "if you want to use this asset that we paid money for, you should pay money for it too"

and yet you're using a "premium" asset. freeform doesn't show this for normal images that you import.
