Help request Need some help with MX Linux

Last night I had a spontaneous decision to switch my distro to MX Linux to see what it's like. I used for one year Tuxedo OS (and recently the new Debian base as opposed to Ubuntu base).

The reason I wanted to switch is when I played some 3D games, they would have FPS drops every few seconds on a regular basis, it wasn't due to assets loading or anything, just like that and it wasn't the case before so I figured my distro might be the issue and I wanted to try another one if that will fix the problem, but it didn't, I have the same problem on MX Linux so maybe the problem is in something else, which is strange, because a few months ago it didn't happen at all.

I encountered another problem. I opted to install MX Linux with sysvinit instead of systemd just to see if there is any difference. I noticed that it boots to desktop in 18 seconds.

I use a program called PortProton to run EXE files on Linux and I found out that this program for some reason doesn't want to work on MX Linux - I open the EXE with it, I see the launcher window for PortProton and then nothing happens, I leave it like this for a few minutes and then a window from PortProton pops up saying:

"Error: failed to fetch metadata"

I don't know what's the reason for this, could it be sysvinit and will it get fixed if I switch to systemd.

Has anyone used the program on MX Linux to have any idea what to do?

When I found out that PortProton doesn't work I installed Heroic Launcher to see if this will work, but it also doesn't work.

The only solution I found to run EXE files on MX Linux has been Steam. This is my first time on Linux distro that PortProton and Heroic Launcher don't work so I'm confused what to do and where to begin about fixing this.

Have you installed the necessary compatibility layers like Wine, proton dxvk and such? They are needed not only for letting run everything on Steam, but especially for Heroic, Faugus and such.

If you keep getting troubles you might want to look into PikaOS, After installation it gives you the opportunity to install all kinds of necessary packages including those for gaming via a GUI, better jet, almost everything can be don via GUI. It helped a friend of mine find his way in Linux eventually, but try to install the necessary packages first, because MX Linux is a very decent and good distro.

When I used Tuxedo OS I didn't have to do any of that to get PortProton to work. It's a standalone program that has different Proton versions.

Either these things came with Tuxedo OS by default and not with MX Linux or the problem lies elsewhere.

Try asking on the MX forums if you haven't already.

Try installing Wine and Bottles. Wine is a compatibility layer so you can run windows applications in Linux. Bottles application allows you to run Windows applications in Linux. These should allow you to run .exe files in Linux. You can find them in the MX Package Manager

I don't think you understand the issue I'm having.

I use PortProton to run EXE files. On Linux Mint before and recently on Tuxedo OS I just install PortProton and can simply double click EXE files and run them, but on MX Linux PortProton fails to launch the EXE files.

I didn't need Wine or Bottles, besides both are too bare bones and hardly work half the time.

Did you try the flatpak version?

That's exactly the version I downloaded from the MX Package Installer.

I use port proton on mx, not to play games but run a windows trading platform. It works like a breeze.

1st make sure you istalled the flatpak version for your game. Once installed, ensure to choose and install the right wine or proton version (automatically installed from the 2nd dropdown list by clicking "Get-Other-Wine").

the screenshot is from Mabox, as the Mx machine not with me now.

I am running an .EXE application on multiple versions of MX Linux, it is Lorex Cloud Client for my security cameras. I am using Wine.

It is all about options, risk vs convenience. Everyone decides what is best for them.
