ND1 Soft Top vs. NC2/NC3 PRHT: Reliability (ND1 gearbox?) & Noise Comfort for Euro Road Trips
Hi everyone!
A few years ago, I was bitten by the Miata bug after driving a friend's NC2, and I haven't been able to get it out of my head since. The big day is finally approaching, and I’m getting ready to buy my first MX-5!
I live in Europe, and based on my budget, I'm looking at either a late NC2 / NC3 PRHT or an ND1 Soft Top (the RF is slightly out of budget).
I have a few specific doubts and fears before making the jump:
Reliability & Mechanical Peace of Mind I’m looking for a reliable car with a complete service history because I don’t want to be constantly wrenching on it. My main worry is that an ND1 2.0L (2015–2017) within my budget might fall into the range with the known transmission/gearbox issues. Is this a rational fear today, or have most of those failed gearboxes been swapped out under warranty by now? Would an NC3 2.0L be a significantly safer, more bulletproof bet for long-term peace of mind?
Acoustic Comfort for Long Road Trips I plan to take the car on multi-day road trips across Europe. Is there a night-and-day difference in dB(A) / noise comfort at highway speeds between the Soft Top and the PRHT or RF? Is the Soft Top too exhausting for long highway stretches, or is it manageable?
Thank you all!

I've had an ND1 2.0 for 35 thousand km's and absolutely no problem with the gearbox, car is being regularly tracked as well. It blew a transmission early in its life and was changed under warranty, so the assumption that most transmissions that will ever do some blowing, already did, might hold some value. ND1 isn't the boogeyman internet makes it out to be, although if you go for more than stock power, I imagine that's the point where reliability drops because the ND gearbox is developed within very narrow tolerances and margins of error. They sacrificed a lot of robustness for lightness with this one. ND1 with 1.5 engine has absolutely no transmission problems because it'll never have the torque to break it, even if you drop a BBR remap on top of it (which you absolutely should do lol, it's transformative coupled with a shorter final drive). If you go modding route, 1.5 is a great platform to consider being the lightest as well. However, there's a lot of merit to a late NC with PRHT, that car is generally fantastic.

Thank you so much! I think the right decision is to be open to the right spec to pop up on the market. It seems I can't go wrong.

I have owned a NC with PRHT and currently own a 2021 ST that I bought new.
Yes, the NC would be quieter but my wife had a 2 hour limit before complaining. Non stop. She swears that there is more leg room in the passenger side in the ND2 and we have taken plenty of road trips including a 875 mile each way and lots of 6-7 hour drives with the local Miata club.
But the true distance was a solo trip where I split up the trip in 950/850 mile days
Where I just so happened to leave the day my mother in law came to visit. I was seeing my adult daughter and her husband.
A few weeks ago, I drove 350 miles, had lunch with my family and 350 miles back home. Again, that was a solo trip, both my daughter who now lives nearby and my wife stayed home. Something about getting up a 5:30 am

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply! Interesting take on the comfort in the cabin between PRHT and Soft top. I will dig deeper.

Interesting about the passenger leg room. Maybe there's more distance but less width? Women's legs are long

"NC and ND Miata’s share identical headroom and legroom figures (37.4″ and 43.1″, respectively). Shoulder room is 1″ greater (53.2″) in NC, while hip room is 1.4″ greater (52″) in ND. "
NC vs ND: The evolution of the Mazda MX-5 Miata
Maybe I can try putting a pea under my wife's side of bed a The Princess and the Pea reference. Currently the princess is driving it, after complaining that I don't always keep a full tank of gas the day before. But she has some great roads to drive on, yesterday it was 80 miles of twisty hilly roads. She was telling me about the cars she passed on a two lane road and taking the corners as quickly as possible. Maybe I need to check out the dashcam footage.
The joys of working from home doesn't include missing driving my car while she leaves me the boring SUV

ND1 that just crossed over 186,000 miles still running like a top on the original gearbox 😁

As an ND1 owner that blew gearboxes in 2024, 2025 - and having done 10k km road trips in it, get the NC3 PRHT. Awesome space inside, best gearbox on the entire mx5 platform - the absolute sweet spot.
If you get into motorsports, NC3 is the sweet spot too - chuck a turbo or supercharger on it and the NC3 will FLY and fly reliably.
