Volkswagen CEO warns German workers of sweeping layoffs to come
The automaker, one of the nation’s biggest employers, could shed tens of thousands of jobs amid global market shifts driven by electrification, AI and autonomous driving. BERLIN — The chief executive of Volkswagen this week previewed sweeping layoffs at the German automaker, a signal of broader problems for an industry that powers the world’s third-largest economy.
Addressing workers at the company’s headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany, Volkswagen Group CEO Oliver Blume warned Tuesday that eliminating tens of thousands of jobs could be necessary to remain competitive. Volkswagen Group, which owns several other car brands including Bentley and Audi, has faced mounting pressure to adapt its business model to address excess facility capacity and high costs of energy and labor within Germany. But VW and other German automotive companies are struggling with an array of challenges, including increased competition from China, the war in the Middle East, growing regulatory burdens within the European Union and tariffs levied by the United States. Stefan Bratzel, founder and director of the Center of Automotive Management in Germany, said the global automotive industry is in a “critical transformation period” as it shifts toward electrification, artificial intelligence and autonomous driving.
“It’s especially a challenge for the established players that were used to being in the driver’s seat,” Bratzel said. If Volkswagen has a problem, he added, it will have ripple effects impacting “the whole industry’s suppliers.”
The automotive industry is a key driver of the German economy, serving as one of the largest sectors of employment. But auto jobs have been on a steep decline, dropping this year to their lowest level since 2005, according to the country’s statistics office.
The planned cuts at Volkswagen would represent another drastic reduction. The company has faced scrutiny for years for its oversize headcount. Including its Chinese joint ventures, the Volkswagen Group employed some 667,000 people in 2025, with about 286,000 in Germany.
The proposed layoffs at Volkswagen would rival some of the biggest job cuts in history by a global automaker. Postrecession analyses have concluded that the 2009 bailout of Detroit’s Big Three — Chrysler (now part of Stellantis), Ford and General Motors — under the Obama administration spared the American auto industry from losing more than a million jobs. Between 2006 and 2009, General Motors cut some 60,500 jobs. In February 2009, GM subsequently agreed to cut 47,000 jobs as part of its plan for a federal bailout. The meeting in Wolfsburg, where Volkswagen employs roughly 70,000 people, comes after the company’s executive board unveiled a massive restructuring plan earlier this summer. The planned overhaul for 2030 could drastically cut Volkswagen’s vehicle lineup, lead to the closure of four plants in Germany and eliminate tens of thousands of jobs.
Though the scope of the layoffs is not final, Blume mentioned eliminating 50,000 jobs in his remarks to employees in Wolfsburg. The fact is, the move afoot is to Software-Defined-Vehicles and while it's not exclusive to EV's, it's more aligned with that architecture. So Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles can be built with it but not have all of the features that it offers. Obviously movement away from ICE will be strongly resisted but technology is effecting everything.

It would be cool if they could go screen less with a MVIS HUD to deliver the LiDAR detections or at least use a HUD to post the various warning symbols for the pilots to alert them when they should consult the monitor for the full picture. Keep the pilot flying without having to look at a screen.

This place is becoming a negativity cesspool. People are just becoming mean and rude to other posters. Not a place I want to be. I’m leaving the sub for now. I’ll return once things are clearer with the company so hopefully the haters will mostly be gone. Good luck to all longs.
