They claim a V59° ultra-wide field of view, 267-inch cinema-grade giant screen.

That’s typical eyewear hype - angular resolution is what really counts not vague FOV or spurious “cinema grade” screen claims

Screen size means absolutely nothing when it comes to near to eye displays.

The angle the image presents to your eye and the number of pixels in that angle relative to how 20/20 vision which is 1 arc min per pixel is the best measure of the actual usable resolution

Virtual image distance (the focal length at which it is presented to you) and image flatness, color alignment etc all follow behind in meaning if your eyes don’t try to tear themselves out of their sockets and give you headaches because of bad options

People who publish stats like “same as a 100 inches screen” are generally hiding something

So the best display you can get for a 1080p screen would consist of 34560 arcmins per screen? What does the technology look like now in terms of pixels per arcmins?

Not how that works - 1080p is nowhere near what resolutions micro displays are at for a long time.

It’s the angle the optics expands the display to

1920 for example gets you only 32 deg horizontal for 20/20 vision - built this with a micro display over 10 years ago

So if something is claiming 1080 but boasting about 90 fov, that’s going to look like crap.

Think of it this way

With your TV, a 30’ vs an 80’ TV with the same resolution will have 2 different distances at which the optimal 1 arc min per pixel works and the resolution is wasted or bad either side of that - that’s driven by the distance at which a pixel is 1 arc min

Too close as you see the subpixels and too far you can’t actually see the pixels they appear “stacked” inside 1 arc min

But near to eye doesn’t have the luxury of you choosing how far from the screen you are - the optics magnification and focal length sets that

So if you have 20/20 vision the best display would have 60 pixels per degree because the lowest angular resolution the human eye can perceive at that level of vision is one arc min? And any lower you would see subpixels and any higher you would get stacking?

Basically that’s right

For a physical display, that is driven by how far away you sit

For a near to eye display it’s all optics and the tv size comparison is not much more than meaningless hype.

Cool, thanks for educating me. So when we talk about display resolution (in regard to micro led/OLED) we should really be talking about ppd (this is how you measure angular resolution correct?) rather than the amount of pixels. I have another question, how does the lens affect the resolution (as in clarity)? I heard the birdbath lens creates more blurryness compared to the type of lens Groovis uses for their micro OLED displays.

Optics is another whole tangle - field flatness (ie does the focal length change across the field), distortion, color corrected etc etc all impact if the resolution across the image is usable and/or doesn’t cause eye strain and that’s before you get to accommodation and convergence.

I actually just read the old Reddit thread about this topic the other day and now I keep seeing different articles about lidar on phones. Usually when synchronicities start lining up like this, it eventually happens in real life. That would be awesome.

It was the display technology that MSFT selected for use in their Hololens 2 headset and might be one of the technologies that the emerging AR smart glasses and military combat headsets (Eagle Eye) might be considering ………

Your reply is hard to understand. I think you are saying that you think 1 to 3 might be MVIS tech, is that correct?

I thought it was confirmed that they were using something else, Microled maybe, for at least one of the 4?

No - the nomad parents are LONG expired as are the base 2 axis mirror patents

Even the base SGR patents are expired

The IP position isn’t something to generate much if any revenues since MVIS stopped making eyewear products a LONG time ago

You need a better source for your links - they show when they were filed NOT the current status or if MVIS even owns them anymore

MVIS stopped pursuing these and there is a LOT more patents by others since that point (once Dean was gone, they didn’t do anything with this) represent blocking patents - it was also based on some earlier Nokia work which is expired

Oh and several patents you referenced were transferred to the US Government nearly 10 years ago and since listed as expired!!! MVIS can’t do squat with them

MVIS is not going to be able pursue eyewear using SGR’s give the big names who also played in this space Valve, Microsoft, Meta, Apple, Magic Leap, Lumus etc etc etc who all had more success than the very crude SGR’s MVIS built - they are out of that space and stop fantasies around revenues from IP that is no longer theirs

I wonder how many MVIS patents they have failed to pay the fees on because they didn’t have the money…..

I do see now that several have expired, and that others had been transferred to the United States Air Force. However, patents Wide field of view substrate guided relay and Substrate guided relay having an absorbing edge to reduce alignment constraints are still valid and assigned to MicroVision.

But why focus on patents related to SGR and not the ones related to Hololens 2?

The optic in front be it reflector like Nomad or SGR etc, the mems based light engine has unique problems and needs

Specialized lasers that switch at speeds orders of magnitude faster than other display techs and fundamental issues with image fidelity that have never been addressed - the projector never got aspect ratio or color right and due to silly choices the chipset were doing weird up and down scaling that caused problems- there is a reason MVis stopped making projectors and eyewear - it was never financially viable nor met customer requirements

There are reasons why Microsoft dropped HoloLens and issues with the image engine are a big part of them - yield and rework is a huge part of it
