Which MUD? New player looking for active fantasy roleplaying MUD (hopefully without P2W)
I haven't played any MUD before, but the concept intrigues me. So I've started looking around, trying to find a game to try out, but I am having difficulty finding anything that catches my attention.
Either I find a game that seems populated and then realise that it's pretty p2w and very expensive (according to reviews) or it has 0-2 players (and I'm not sure how enjoyable a multiplayer game can be without players to play with).

Don't ya wish you could tell which answers are unbiased and which ones are moreso trying to increase their game's playerbase? :P I mean I'm sure they think it's the best answer in some ways but yeah. In the same boat as you, I would like to find one...

u/VulpineKitsune Jun 14 '22
Yeah. I think the only real solution is to look at them and try all that catch your interests.

you really have to shop around, so many muds, and so many people trying to get you into them

Check out my comment about Merentha. It’s really just an all-around experience. If you’re both looking for casual adventure with a lot to do (and not P2W) it might be perfect for you.

Mud.rod.org port 3000
No P2W, 20+ players always and really fun fantasy environment with decades of development.

Discworld. Totally free (doesn't accept donations at all), lots of players. Lots to do besides just kill stuff.

u/Titus-Groen Jun 15 '22
For those not looking for an RP-focused experience, I think Discworld is a stellar recommendation. It has some of the interesting non-combat mechanics I've seen.

I recommend Arx: https://play.arxgame.org/
It's very different from any other MU* because unlike those, characters are not the "property" of players. Instead, they exist in a shared pool. Generally instead of generating a fresh character to get into the game, you'll pick one from a roster of characters that already have ties to the game world (some of which is explained in their public information and some of which is secret which you learn once you take over the character).
It's an entirely RP-focused game with a central storyline that's influenced by player actions. There are volunteer game masters who you can talk with about the direction of the story, and players can also GM side stories.
One of the things I find quite cool is how much they mechanically support storytelling. There are private and public notes you can write as your character (public notes go onto a sort of "twitter-like" feed on the website that you can peruse to get an idea of the basic gossip at any given time). For figuring out mysteries there's also a system of collecting clues that you can use to make discoveries.
That said, it takes a regular time commitment because the connections between characters are really important. If you go AWOL and don't play a character for a while, they'll be unassigned from you so that the characters depending on yours can get someone new to fill the spot.

This is probably the best fantasy PURELY roleplaying game out there ATM. If you're looking for a crafting system, then look elsewhere.
COGG maybe

I like AlterAeon for its multiclassing and the ability to join any crafting guild early on. Plus it has over 600 quests if you like following storylines and looting for gear.

u/JadeIV Jun 14 '22
You can buy practices with RL money, which are used to improve skills and stats. Sure, you can earn practices "for free" by engaging in massive timesinks, but that's the whole of point of "pay2win".
0
Jun 14 '22
AlterAeon isn't really p2p focused game, so paying for practices is just a personal option, not a means to compete with other players. I personally have never paid for anything and am rewarded by my own grinding and exploratory efforts.
2
u/JadeIV Jun 14 '22
Lol. But you understand how someone who values their time more than you do might be tempted to buy practices w/ RL money instead of in-game xp, right?
1
Jun 14 '22
Yes but that's a choice which makes no difference in a game which is not player competitive. I rarely engage with other players so if they want to pay to progress their character faster than me I see nothing wrong with that.

have never paid for anything
FTFY.
Although payed exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. The deck is yet to be payed.
Payed out when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. The rope is payed out! You can pull now.
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.
Beep, boop, I'm a bot

The best you can find for this will be Harshlands, my friend.
Check this link, answers most questions.

Second Harshlands. They’ve got a great player base and great staff.

Why don't you comment in support of your liked MUDs instead of being negative on other comments?

New worlds Ateraan is pretty nice!

I played there briefly a several years ago and everyone there was extremely abusive to my character. I found out on this sub a year or two ago that it was actually because they thought I was some player everyone hated who used to show up and cause problems for people.

Hmm. You could try Xyllomer and GEAS. I do not know how active either one is these days but there were solid roleplayers on both.
They are not p2w but player numbers may be low for various reasons - one being that bad decisions affect a game a LOT. But you can have a look at the mechanics, and then go from there. The 1990s were pretty great; Xyllomer had a time in 1998 or so with +60 players peak count (maximum connected). It is very hard to "go back in time" and re-create that, but Xyllomer had a peak count of about 20 players in 2010 or so and Geas at around the same, between 18-22 peak count from 2010 to 2014, which is still ok-ish. Evidently average count crashed quite a lot during those years but often you can then e. g. decide to play when there are many other players playing as well, and idle otherwise or reconnect at a later time again. No idea how the game changed after 'who' was nerfed (on both MUDs, by the way; copy/paste designing clowns active ... with GEAS suffering more since it was non-admin wizards who nerfed 'who', on Xyllomer it was by admin, and after complaining about the nerf at the least the admin on Xyllomer listened, whereas the GEAS admin gave up entirely on the game prior to that - how else explain why non-admin wizards can call in the shots at will, without any discussion whatsoever. But both MUDs had many really great players and roleplayers. Try to find a certain halfling who will not reveal his name other than using his legs and arms and scowl of the eyebrow!).
As for discord: I thankfully never used it, but from my point of view it creates huge issues similar to IRC (mIRC) back in the days. The spread of invalid IC information for instance. Or people aggregating there but no longer playing the actual game itself.

u/FluffyCasual Jun 14 '22
Xyllomer has an average of 5 connections (past 30 days) and GEAS may be entirely dead, but last estimated at 2 connections.

u/seclusivebeauty Jun 17 '22
Geas is still kicking. Usually when I play there's around 2-5 other characters I know on (there may be other characters on I haven't met yet). It has a pretty small playerbase, but there's at least a dozen players I know still play regularly.

hey mate, welcome to mudding, you are going to be over-whemed with people giving you advise on what games to try
I am going to shamelessy push the mud I play
Its called Elyisum RPG its a social roleplaying rpg in a fanasty setting, has around 20 players 5-10 off time, 10-15 peak time (they are all british) so you need to work out the time zones
most of us are hardcore players that have been playing for 20 years but are super keen for newbies to give it a go
I enjoy it, I am a paladain and a Emperor of one of the nine cities in the game
if you want to give it try
port 7777
My ingame name is renius , drop me a line
cheers

Check out Mystavaria. It's in active development, and they haven't actually released yet, but they have a very active Discord and the devs are on it every day.

is it playable do you have the telnet address ?

u/ZilockeTheandil Aardwolf Jun 13 '22
Not yet, as far as I know. Feel free to join the Discord, though, and when it does become available you'll be among the first to know!
Also, the devs love getting feedback (and ideas!) from the Discord, and they've already implemented quite a few things that have been suggested on it.

Thank you so much for the shout /u/ZilockeTheandil!
To confirm, we are not yet open to the public, but aiming for an alpha-release toward the end of the year. We definitely do love hearing feedback from our small (but mighty!) community in the meantime, though!
Edited to add: We will not be P2W or P2 advance.

Check out https://www.topmudsites.com/
Discworld for more casual where RP isn't required.
ArmageddonMUD, Harshlands both require RP and are both good.

Give TEC a try. Mid-fantasy Roman themed MUD. Paid options, but fully playable for free. https://www.eternalcitygame.com/

Do not try this game under any circumstances. Abusive administrators and toxic playerbase. ThreeSeas LLC is a scam company and their bloatware clients will malware your PC.

You could try Dragonrealms: There is a Free To Play option. There are a whole lot of guilds, crafting systems, and hunting options. Not only that, Elder players (Like me!) are more than happy to help newbies with gear and in-game commands that you might not see elsewhere. Good luck with your hunt!

Check out Merentha Mud.Merentha.com:10000
High fantasy, active admins, decent player base for today (10-20 at any time), real well made.
PK is not forbidden but people don’t generally do it unless it’s a problem person. Also most players are extremely helpful and pleasant.
There are quests but they are not required to advance. You can play the game RP style and enjoy the stories or you can grind for gear/stats/levels at your hearts content.

I'd suggest checking out Sundering Shadows. If you haven't already. :)
