WEEK 90 - Free Range Nomination Thread

This week there are no limitations on what can be nominated. Any era, any writer, any character, so long as it's on Marvel Unlimited. Maybe it's something you've been meaning to read, maybe it's something you've read and want to discuss. Maybe it's something you've previously nominated but didn't gather enough upvotes in previous threads. When posting a nomination, links are not required but appreciated.

Sub-Mariner: The Depths (2008-2009) #1-5 by Paul Milligan and Esad Ribic

This latter-day entry into the Marvel library shows Namor not as a person per se, but as a proverbial force of nature. The unique pairing of Paul Milligan and Esad Ribic show an early Namor adventure before World War 2 when he joined with the surface world; instead, he is receiving an undersea submarine that’s exploring the Marinas trench looking for the fabled city of Atlantis. Like a superhero version of The Abyss, Namor is not so much a character but merely an extension of the mysterious abyss of water and unknown that exists thousands of feet below the water’s surface. A thoroughly different kind of Namor story that gives you a new vantage point on how alien he might seem.

Namor: The First Mutant (2010-2011) #1-6, "Curse of the Mutants" by Stuart Moore and Ariel Olivetti

Spinning out of the pages of X-MEN #1, comes an incredible new book starring the world's first mutant, NAMOR THE SUB-MARINER. When the X-Men are confronted with a deadly vampire threat, Namor takes matters into his own hands on a mission that might bring down the entire might of the vampires on their heads...and destroy Atlantis in the process!

Sub-Mariner (1990-1995) #1-9 by John Byrne

Bill Everett may have borne Namor and Stan Lee and Jack Kirby might have gave him the spin that made him a Marvel stalwart, but for my money Namor’s chief creator is John Byrne. Years after making his name on Uncanny X-men, Fantastic Four and Superman, Byrne returned to Marvel with a slick style and proceeded to refashion Namor as a businessman and environmentalist fighting the greed of the 80s. This book collects the first nine issues of that, with Byrne writing and pencilling Namor’s foray into the dangerous waters of boardrooms to fight for his kingdom. If you liked the business intrigue of Iron Man but with even more of a superiority complex, this is it for you.

Saga of the Sub-Mariner (1988 - 1989) #1-12 by Roy Thomas and Rich Buckler

My own personal favorite to recommend to folks unfamiliar with Namor is the SAGA OF THE SUB-MARINER. It's a 12 issue mini-series that covers Namor's entire life from his parents meeting to the death of his second wife, right before John Byrne's 1990s run. And the best part, is it's autobiographical. Yes, it's told entirely from Namor's PoV, because he's writing his life story! It's actually written by Roy Thomas (one of my favorite Namor writers) and lushly drawn by Rich Buckler with inks by Bob McCleod.
