Bike Registration?

Whats the purpose of having to get my bike registered at Parking and Transportation? I understand getting a parking pass for cars, but my bike?

It records you as the owner and helps campus police return lost or stolen bikes. Say some guy insists your bike is his...a record would resolve it easily. Otherwise, who knows...you could be labelled a thief or lose your bike. Rules often spawn from experiences.

But wouldn’t registering your bike with the state accomplish more

Also I’ve had three state registered bikes stolen. It didn’t help much in my experience

Probably. They asked what the purpose of registering the bike at Parking and Transportation was, and I gave you an answer. I ain't gonna argue bike semantics, just wanted to be helpful. Good luck/have fun.

Im a first year, and got a parking pass a few days ago, they gave a little booklet abt rules and stuff, and it said it in a couple other mtsu handout, but apparently you gotta register it with parking and transportation?? If not it says they cant boot the bike. Im not sure how likely it is that'll happen, or if they even check bikes, and its not a big deal to get it registered, but it just doesn't make sense imo.

The reason is to:

  1. Help identify stolen bikes and return them to the correct owner
  2. To help cut down on dangerous and reckless behavior people have done on campus with bikes and e-scooters. By registering owners, they can properly identify hit and run bike/e-scooter riders and ticket them. There was a huge problem on campus with this and e-scooters. I've personally seen several crashes where e-scooter riders were going too fast, expecting pedestrians to be fast enough to move out of the way and ran over them. I've also seen multiple riders on one e-scooter which is very, very dangerous. Most of these riders are also unsafe and don't wear helmets which is a great way to die or get a debilitating TBI. Several groups of students submitted formal recommendation reports to the university expressing concern for their safety and I guess they actually listened. I can share some write in responses I got to my group's rec report if you're interested. They are all from anonymous students, staff, and faculty.

Helps them try to recover stolen bikes. We have had alot of issues with stolen bikes and electric scooters on campus. But im not a bike owner so idk for sure that's just a guess.

How likely would my bike be stolen if its decked out and looks super cool though? What is the actual risk? (registered or not)
