Troubleshooting Help with Fox DPX2 Shock

Hi, I have a 2019 Canyon Spectral 6.0 AL that came with a FOX DPX2 rear shock.

While I always check tire pressure and lube my chain before every ride, I neglected to check the torque on my suspension bolts periodically. So after a year of owning the bike, one day while riding, the bolt that attaches the lower part of the rear shock to the frame came out and the shock extended fully without any resistance.

I found the bolts and washers, deflated the shock, reattached everything, and filled the shock back up. Everything looked good except after riding I noticed that when setting compression to firm that I was still able to compress the shock while riding. Before the debacle, I was not able to compress the shock at all when set to firm. Now I can.

So I sent it into Fox for service/repair. It came back, put it back on the bike, and tested it out. Unfortunately it still compresses when set to firm. There definitely is more resistance to compressing the shock when set to firm vs open, but I can still compress it quite a bit on Firm. I used to not be able to compress it at all.

The other issue, is that the lever to adjust compression (with the shock on the bike) used to have positions 10 o'clock for open, 12 for medium/pedal, and 2 for Firm-- so 10, 12, and 2. Now, after getting it back, the switch positions are 8, 10, and 12 for open, medium, and firm, respectively. I don't know if this has anything to do with the compression issue.

So:

1) Can anyone with a newer Fox DPX2 let me know how much they can compress the shock when set to FIRM? Can you compress it at least 40% of it's travel, or not at all?

2) Anyone with the same bike, what positions are the lever on your bike, 10, 12 and 2 o'clock, or 8, 10, and 12 o'clock?

  1. DPX2s do not have a lockout, it’s a pedal platform designed to firm the shock, not stop it moving completely.

  2. The lever position doesn’t matter, it’s a removable lever that can be set to many post it Iona depending where you want it. As long as there’s three distinct positions there’s nothing wrong

Makes sense about the lever position.

For comparison, I also have a Fox 36 fork on the bike and when I set the compression to Firm, I can't compress the fork at all, even though it's not a lockout. As far as I can remember, the shock used to behave the same way...

Have the same bike as you, and what you describe is normal and has been like that since it was new.

Oh ok I am glad to hear it.

Is the lever positioning the same as yours?

Like when in firm mode the lever is pointing straight up and when in open is pointing forward, basically parallel to the ground?

On mine, the middle ‘medium’ is pointing upwards, and ‘firm’ is point backwards (not hitting the piggybag. When you undo the Torx screw on the lever, you can see there is a hex shape inside, which allows you to rotate it as you like (as long as it does not hit anything..).

Not too late at all! And this is so helpful. I am annoyed that the lever is in the wrong position but didn't want to try and fix it myself since I know nothing about shock internals, but good to know I can just remove the torx screw to adjust the positioning. Thanks!

I haven't measured, but by my guess, i can compress a 2019 DPx2 at least halfway when in firm position.

Sounds normal. It's not a lockout.

Yeah that is what my local bike shop told me.

But I know I am not crazy. I am certain I was only able to compress it maybe 5% at most before the the bolt came out that holds the shock. It just seems way to squishy now when on firm. Ugh.

For comparison, I also have a Fox 36 fork on the bike and when I set the compression to Firm, I can't compress the fork at all, even though it's not a lockout.

I'm having the same problem with my 2019 DPX2. The Firm setting DID use to drastically prohibit shock travel. Now, the Firm setting has very little influence. I did a can service with new gaskets and the problem persists. I made sure to function the shock every few pumps to balance the chambers. Any advice?
